Kind of a returning player. I pop in every now and then, and it seems like the forum is always bumping, but the game, especially lockdown, seems super dead. Maybe I just haven't been on long enough yet?
Forum alive, game dead?
Midnight-Dj is right, that there aren't many posts here. And PvP is something I haven't tried in a while. On the other hand, I always see players in Haven and friends online. PvE is still viable, even though it's not the glory days.
It's not dead, it's just 1/4 as alive as it once was and has been steadily losing players according to steam charts and also less people post now and we don't have any updates announced ever again and...
Cheer up Fehzors! We have promos :p
To the topic. The pvp is almost dead. What do you expect...instead of making an event on LD or new awards, they made some new stages.
Pve is still an option, people keep playing,i am sure you can find easy someone to play whatever stage you want.
No news about update.I dont think the game will do a comeback. If you are bored the same content, then better dont play,it ll ruin your old memories.People keep complaining and raging, sadly it ll not change something as we saw countless times with rage threads etc
SK is almost an empty shell. The paths it could take, are 2
1)Drain the game with promos until the game dies
2)Make a serious update and renew the interest of old players and slowly rise the players'population.
I want to be positive but i dont think that the 2 will happen.
The game's still thriving, just going through a bit of some ups & downs, in terms of player populace.
While I know GH has been working hard to keep the game alive, it wouldn't hurt to open up the possibility of having people working remotely to help them.
Why, on an unrelated matter, TTR(that just hit Live yesterday, just so you know) has been on for 4 years standing, & TLOPO(that just hit Open Beta yesterday, too) has been here & still ongoing since Alpha, & they all have people working remotely around the world to keep these games thriving.
I'll say this once again, unrelated, I know, but I gotta lay out examples, here.
Back to the related matter at hand.
Remote working is becoming more of a mainstay to many jobs nowadays, even to developing console games, mobile games, & MMOs, & it wouldn't hurt for GH to open up that path to keep SK running, & so should other MMO developers. They should definitely think about that.
The game's doing just fine! It's no Lawbreakers yet. The game gets a bit quieter after Summer, it's back to school for everyone. Winter holidays always show huge spikes in playerbase...seems a lot of people still can't help coming back when they've enough time on their hands.
@Bonjourhippo What you mean fine?I dont want to sound like a prick or bring doom.Yes the game is not dead
but its clear that the playerbase is on decline.Look LD for example..In the beggining we had matches on afternoon on Europe, after months, rarely u could see EU LD and then it stopped. The same thing now happens on USA..People are coming back on sk but they ll not play even pve on regular basis(Why someone will grind for only new costumes?).This is the after effect of designing only promos.I never cared about promo but i can understand their importance. It brings funds for the game but if they combined em with an update, then more people would be intersted on them and the game..To me it seems like GH believe that the game cant make a comeback so they ll not risk to invest(time+money)and i ll not accuse them but we cant say that the game is doing fine. How long it ll last following this path?1 year?2 years?
It is not dead but it ll become dead faster than it could. With only fanboys who like to buy costumes the game cant function properly. The expiration date shortens when you see no serious new content.(The Sleep update, was a breath, but they could do more on the following weeks to put the game back on the correct path).
The game still has a nice playerbase. The forums aren't too active actually, but the game always has someone around so long as you aren't dumped into one of the empty Havens. The EU playerbase is significantly smaller than the US one, so you'll find what time of the day you play at often affecting how alive the game appears.
Just know that even if you're not finding people out in the open, there are many players exploring the clockworks and completing their missions just like the old times. :)
I play from time to time...But i just cant stay for long because this game is turbo unrewarding. Like...Literally. Amount of time required to earn anything is
crazy. There are few missions that allow slightly faster gains (DaN and FSC)...but it feels like job anyways.
Reward/ time ratio is just so low..... One hour play brought me 8k crowns and some useless mats i dont need and cant use for anything apart from selling them really cheap to npc because other knights also get tons of these.
If they at least allowed to substitute fire crystals with materials and unused heat, and daily missions rewarded Orb sets/crowns instead of useless "prestige", then it would be a little bit better...
It's not really "dead", but it's definitely not very active.
Also the forums were never really active (at least in my experience).
Triplescrew, having orb rewards for prestige missions is actually a really good idea (maybe do all the missions and get an orb/orb set?)
Actually, hold on, I'm going to go steal that idea. Gimme a second.
> "Just know that even if you're not finding people out in the open, there are many players exploring the clockworks and completing their missions just like the old times. :)"
I'm one! Just leveled the first of my swords to 5 stars a week and a half ago, and still newbishly proud of it. xD (And for full perspective for you oldies: I've only fought Vana -once- yet, loool.)
So yep, there are definitely still newer players making their way happily through the game, me and my friends among them. :3
And while i'm thinking about it, i'd like to thank all who've come before for the incredible resource you've created, in these forums and the wiki. Without that wealth of information, SK would be much more difficult and less fun to get into than it truly has been!
I come from playing a few mmorpg's, it has always been my favorite genre of game. I find that especially from my experience playing World of Warcraft saying a game is dead (whether it is or not) really denotes a bad gaming experience for yourself and other players. You feel that playing the certain game is not worth it because the first thought that comes to mind is "dead".
I guess you could consider me a bit of a hypocrite as i am not very active myself
I do accept in game modes such as lockdown the number of people that are queueing and up for playing has decreased by a lot, cant we just be realistic and accept that things aren't as they were and get on with things?
I've gotta second what Triplescrew said. The game gets hard to stick with because the grind gets Super Dull in the mid/late game. Alchemy orbs are rare, nearly beyond belief, and amassing enough crowns, to buy energy, to pay for orbs from the Supply Depot takes insanely long to get a single 5-star item.
800ce at ~8500cr Per 100ce comes to about 68,000cr.
Playing for about an hour I can collect maybe 2000cr.
That's grinding ~34 hours to pay for ONE item.
And that's not even counting the 3-star and 4-star items, recipes, and alchemy costs that come first!
Even if you doubled the rate of crown collection it'd still take ~17 hours just for the eternal orbs.
Being in the 3-4-Star range feels really slow now and because neither the clockworks nor my knight seem to be making any progress, the game's gotten really stale. Like, I'll play for an hour, collect ~2000cr and then great, I'm 1/4 of the way to being 1/8th of the way (1/32ndth? of the way) to acquiring One new piece of gear.
Heck, the only reason I have Any 4-5* items is because I'd built them before the Alchemy orbs were added or because I dropped $25 on the game. Which, of course, is what they want/need, but I just wish I could give them my money without feeling like the game was passive aggressively trying to squeeze it out of me. Heck, the only reason I dropped that $25 was to make up for the time I used to play this game (Back when I didn't have an income of my own). I took a 3-4 year break from this game and it's still my most played game in my Steam Library!
"Playing for about an hour I can collect maybe 2000cr."
That crown rate is far below benchmarks that I've seen. Perhaps you're not playing in the profitable areas. Check out Bopp's FAQ that points to a handful of resources. Highly optimized players can farm at around 20kcrn+/hr but I typically help guildies hit 8-12kcrn/hr quite easily (in non-dangerous areas, where they are more than capable to solo at the same speed without me).
Perhaps you're not playing in the profitable areas.
You mean FSC for the 9000000000th time?
AKA not fun?
@Ze-Epik
"You mean FSC for the 9000000000th time?"
No. In fact, the assertion that FSC is the fastest crown farming area is incorrect (Lancer Knightz' data shows it's actually OCH). Furthermore, purporting that it is the only good farming area shows that you have not checked out the linked resources -- multiple informed sources recommend selectively playing the arcade rather than missions at all.
I stopped playing the game a while ago, but I still occasionally check the forums. As far as I remember, for Asians lockdown was pretty much dead all the time. And when we went to the USA server, there was lag.
And here I am,
crashing the forums and probably wasting my time to an empty audience. This game has has a astonishing 7 years of growth and now renounces to 200 players active. It's hard to say that any current games will ever be able to replicate the MMOG retro feel Spiral Knights brought, especially into my childhood starting off around 6 years ago and it will always hold a place in my heart. To be blunt I do believe myself that there is no question about Sega and even more Three Rings just abandoned this flawed master piece and never decide to reinnovate it/or make it an option for it to be an Open Source. For now it will slowly dwindle in numbers till my generation grows to old to care and will be forgotten shamefully. This will probably be my last time ever checking these beautiful forums full of Hope and encourage for a brighter future for this lost game.

i better slap a unecessary "sad-ish" videogame OST as a unecessary complement

Wait, what? Really? Any citations? I'm surprised...
He gave you a citation, to Lancer Knightz. Here is the direct link:

It is pretty dead around here, you don't see a lot of posts here, maybe only a dozen per day around here. But soon enough I know Bopp and Fangel will rush to the scene and proof me otherwise. You will be seeing them around.
If you want to play PvP, there are many better games out there, you know?
