Is the Spiral Knights economy still worth it?

It's the year 2017. 2011 was 6-7 years ago since it's almost 2018.

Is the value of promo boxes, in game items costs, energy prices and etc. still the same value as 6-7 years ago? The in game price tags have never changed.

Color changers and modifiers still cost 50K crowns.
Heating one 5* item at 100% costs 453 rads per item. (since 2013)
14 promo boxes costs 49$ (that's half of 100$ or 3.50$ per item unboxed)
Costumes and accesories are locked or cost thousands of CE to swap around.
UV rolling is gambling set to exponential values of random.

But is all this REALLY worth it? We all know the player base isn't what it used to be. I don't have any science behind this, so somebody please debate with me.

don't know prices

If you're asking about prices, then my answer is "I don't know".

Color changers, height modifiers, costumes, and accessories never had any effect on gameplay. Non-aesthetically, they never had any value. Aesthetically, they seem to have as much value as ever.

Similarly, the rules behind UVs have not changed at all since 2013-07-30, when mist energy was removed. Right?

Minor correction: Heating one 5-star item costs an average of 420 Radiants, although some players prefer to spend 453 to remove the risk of spending more than 453.

You might be asking a question other than the ones that I have addressed above.

:/

Depends, I never cared much into a game's economy, after all, only a very VERY tiny percentage of gamers can make a living out of it.

SK's economy (ie AH) lives and dies by its player base, and as player base dies so does the demand vs. supply, one dies and the other follow suit.

As for the fixed price commodities are concerned, that is all up to one's own judgement.

Would I invest in such a economy? No, I am not going to get much out of it.

I guess what I'm trying to

I guess what I'm trying to say is, when the game had a bigger player base back in time, there was more AH and energy activity.

Now that we live in a time where there are fewer players, the AH has less pages to offer and on average higher energy prices.

With less virtual currency running around in crowns and energy, is the price of energy and promo boxes in real currency still worth the 2012 price tags?
(they can price it anyway they want, and as long as someone buys it's justified for them; should they adjust pricing to reflect today's players)

er

I'm not entirely sure. In fact, the past month or two the actual energy prices have dropped back down to pre-battle sprite times (8k-8.5k crowns for 100 energy).

I'd wager to say the crown amount in the game has only increased since free elevators. However, the price tags on cosmetics are pretty much always "fair" in the sense they don't necessarily matter much, and the playerbase is what deciphers their value.

With the new Style Kits, changing your personal color, height, and eyes is much cheaper and encourages the same "collect them all!" behavior that collecting gear used to encourage.

Direct purchases, in my opinion, are still fair, especially since it only becomes "cheaper" with time so long as the natural course of inflation occurs.

I would, personally, enjoy more bundled promotions though. While cosmetics are fun to acquire and separating them from energy was a good thing for accessibility, it also made player wealth shift from money to possessions. While this isn't bad, it makes even wealthy players feel poorer than before. Small bundles that last a short period of time (perhaps they can be an event between slime casinos and hardcore mode?) in which players get a small bonus for purchasing energy would be a nice carrot on a stick. Additionally, if Spiral Knights merchandise is made into a reality, bundling energy and/or a special item reskin/accessory/artifact would be a nice addition.

Box changes have been the most active (opinion) of the OP's list. They've tweaked the odds of rare items and the place in which boxes were purchased (bonus with energy, standalone purchase, from supply depot).
