I have a character that's pretty much all guns, all four slots occupied by guns, mostly all maximum ASI, CTR, and Gun Damage. I'm wondering if I could get some tips for bombing, and what I should try. I got all damage types for each slot, all sheer offense (got a Carbine for poison, though). Any tips on where to start? I heard the Shard bombs are somewhat making a comeback, and I'm not sure if Haze bombs can give me an end result greater than just shootin' lemons at the enemies.
Current weapons are Wildfire, Blitz, Obsidian Carbine, and Iron Slug.
Gunner+Bomber tips?
1: Nitronome: Great bomb for defensive and offensive use, useful in every possible situation (this is the most fun weapon ever)
2: Dark Briar Barrage and Dark Retribution: The main damaging bombs (best used with as much damage increase as possible)
3:Electron Vortex and Celestial Vortex: Hybrids' best friends (Electron Vortex is a bit better)
4:Torpor Tantrum and Stragger Storm: Best crowd control weapons (Torpor Tantrum is a bit better)
Notes:
1: Make sure to have as much charge time reduction as possible.
2: Haze bombs are frowned upon in lockdown so avoid bringing them.
3: Shard bombs are great but not as good as Dark Briar Barrage or Dark Retribution in most cases.
4: Nitronome is the best bomb if you're planning on owning only one bomb.
5: Nitronome is the best bomb if you're planning on owning only one weapon.
6: Nitronome is the best bomb if you're planning on owning only one thing in this world.
7: Craft a Nitronome.
8: FEEL the nitronome!
9: BECOME the Nitronome!
10: ALL HAIL THE NITRONOME!
What's wrong with Shivermist Buster?
I feel like a broken record, because I've posted about this so many times, but maybe you haven't seen those posts, so I'm happy to say it again...
In my experience, expert players tend to stay alive through mobility, dodging, and manipulating the crowds. Freeze prevents all of that. A frozen monster can't be kited, shield-bumped, or knocked back.
Novice players are less good at the mobility tactics. They are too busy being freaked out by the monsters. So they find comfort in freezing the monsters.
Based on these concepts, one would expect players to go through a certain developmental arc: First they love freeze weapons; then they equip them but rarely use them; then they stop equipping them altogether. Indeed, I have seen several players go through this arc.
So, when I advise novice players, I don't "forbid" them from getting freeze, but I try to explain that it might not be their best long-term investment.
Have you read the Bombing Guide on the wiki? It's pretty good.
Because of your remark about damage types, let me point out: Damage type is not the most important criterion in choosing a bomb (unlike in swords and guns, arguably). There are a couple of reasons. First, the support bombs are used for reasons other than damage, such as status, vortices, knockback, etc. Second, bomb blasts often hit monsters of multiple families, and you can't expect to get special damage against all of them.
Now here is my standard "so you want to try bombs" advice:
* Dark Briar Barrage and Dark Retribution are damage-oriented bombs. They are easy to use because of the lack of knockback.
* You should try a haze-style bomb. They're all good except for Shivermist Buster (in my opinion). People usually think of them as support, but there are situations in which Voltaic Tempest or Ash of Agni can inflict massive damage.
* You should try a vortex bomb. Most people say that the shock one is slightly better than the poison one, which is significantly better than the original one. But any of them would let you try out a vortex lifestyle.
There are more bombs than that, of course. Eventually you should try all styles. But the ones above are the natural first choices for someone with your background.
