Prologue: Cradle's Decent

"SOMETHING'S HIT US! WE'RE GOING DOWN!"

It felt like a blur, everybody running for their lives, escaping the falling ship. One was confused on what was happening, a younger one. "What's going on? Were we hit?" Finally, he decided to run to the escape pods. He grabbed a small one, and launched.

The drop was long, and the Young Recruit fell asleep. He slept the whole way down, until he crashed. When he left the pod, equipment in hand, he suddenly got a transmission. "I'm picking up a signal from somebody near me. If that signal is the person I'm talking to, head towards me. And another thing...welcome to Cradle."

The Young Knight walked down to the signal, fighting Gelatinous beings and little Salamander-like monsters, and saw a familiar face. "R-Rhendon?" "Oh, hello! I don't think I know you, Recruit. What's your name?" The Young Knight smiled. "Call me Sarons, sir. Where are the other knights?" Rhendon pointed to the distance. "They formed a Rescue Camp up there. I think you should head there too. I'll stay here and scout out the area for more survivors. I'll meet you back at the Camp, Sarons!"

And with that, Sarons headed off, looking for the camp.

Chapter 1: A Thunk from a Trunk

Sarons reached the last area before the Rescue Camp, greeted by 2 Elite Knights and a Veteran. "Greetings, Sarons. Rhendon told us to meet you here." The Knight wearing armor similar to the cubes of Jelly found earlier put his hand out.

"Greetings, Elite Knights. I guess you just said my name, so I don't need to introduce myself. It is an Honor to be with you here."

"Let's get going before dusk comes, so we can--" The Exit was blocked off by a gate, as well as the entrance to the area. Statues rose up from the ground, sparking to life. "...Gun Puppies."

"Then that means..."

A Roaring oak appeared from the ground, Gears sprouting from it, armor protecting some of it's body.

"It's the Ironwood Sentinel!"

The Knights stood their ground, Sarons joining them. Recruit or not, he was ready to fight.

The battle was brutal, damage dealt to both sides, and the Gun Puppies were not stopping. The Sentinel was fierce, but slow.

"I have an idea!" Sarons stopped attacking the Sentinel, realizing that the Puppies were the main damage towards them. He struck down the puppies, but more appeared. Striking them down too, it seemed to be working.

"Why didn't we think of that?" One of the Knights was asking.

"Because we're side characters and he's the main character." The other answered.

Still, the battle was not over. The Sentinel was still up and running, fighting

Eventually, the Sentinel seemed to have been defeated. The Knights rejoiced and relaxed for a moment.

"Good job there, Recruit. You might have what it takes."

Sarons smiled, as the others got up to leave. He started to get up, only to notice the Sentinel seemed to not be dead. It got up, seeking vengeance, and turned towards the Veteran. Before it was too late, the others spotted the Sentinel as well, but wouldn't be able to stop the Creature.

Sarons jumped into the way, taking a nasty hit to the head, the Veteran still taking a little bit of damage. The other two Knights killed the Sentinel, helping the Veteran up. They then checked Sarons.

"...Powered off, he's unconcious."

"So what do we do?"

"Bring him to the camp, obviously."

~SKIP ACROSS THE PARTS THAT DON'T CONTAIN OUR HERO THOUGH THAT COULD PROBABLY ENHANCE THE STORY A BIT~

"...Ugh, my head..."

Sarons woke up in an Escape pod. "...Was that just a dream?" He got out, only to realize he was in the Rescue camp, surrounded by Knights. But most were wounded, some dead. "...What...what happened here?"

Rhendon jumped out, startling Sarons. "Night happened. And we don't want it to happen again."

"And by that, you mean..."

"When night falls, Monsters appear. We die."

"Ahhh, OK. So what's our job?"

"Simple. Our scouts have detected some sort of facility with this Artifact in it. We've heard that it contains a lot of energy in it, enough to power our camp for as long as we need until everybody's outta here."

"OK, so we've managed to get some of the guys here to go to the area and take the Artifact with no problems or monsters guarding it?"

"...Well, that's where you come in, Sarons."

"So I just go and snatch the Artifact without any trouble from anything, right?"

...

"..."

"..."

"...Even the Narrator's gone Silent, so I guess I have to fight my way in there."

Chapter 2: The Analyzon

I should really continue this.

The facility was...surprisingly well-kept. Machinery ran as if it recently started up. All the while, the metallic footsteps of the Recruit echoed through the building.

"This is Sarons. I'm moving through the facility at a steady pace."

"Be careful, Recruit. There are reports of Mechanical beings further down in the path."

"Robots? I thought we were the only mechanical ones here."

"These ones aren't sentient, they follow directives."

"Though technically we follow directi--"

"Now's not the time for philosophical questions!"

"Y-Yes sir...sorry."

'Jeez,' he thought. This was the first time he heard Rhendon act so...serious. Maybe something was happening back at the rescue camp. But now wasn't the time to dabble on small things, there were Scuttlebots up ahead!

She watched the Knight, as they battled the groups of Scuttlebots, having little trouble with it. Perhaps they could fight him...

The fight was over. The gates were opened, as Sarons put his Proto Blade away. He readied his Proto Gun, scared, but still moving. This was unlike anything he had gone through before. Training simulations weren't missions based around exploration or attacking, it was defense, defending the ships they lived on, defending their homes, or even defending the possible home they could find out in the vast, empty space. But now, much like they were forced into this new world, Cradle, Sarons was forced into a new kind of mission.

And then he saw her.

A robot, similar to the knights he knew on the ship, but without the same weaponry, or any weaponry at all. They looked scared and damaged, one of the eyes on their visor flickering.

"Rhendon...there's another robot here. Could be one of ours."

"...Approach with caution. They could be helpful."

Sarons approached the robot, as they stepped away.

"Hey. It's ok...I'm a Spiral Knight. Just like you."

"N-Not...knight. Analyzon..."

"Analyzon...? W-Well, it's ok...I'm just as confused, we can figure things out together...my name is Sarons."

"L-Lynn..."

"Lynn? That's your name? Don't worry Lynn...I'll get you out of here, and then we can fix you up!"

"N-No leaving...You're in...danger."

"Danger?"

Suddenly, the lights flickered on, as a hulking mass of scrap and machinery powered on, practically roaring.

"Heh heh heh! More prey!"

Sarons looked up at a control room to see some sort of furry creature.

"Great...who are you, and what are you doing here?!"

"You can call me Razwog, Schemer Razwog! Not that a 2 megabyte memory piece of scrap metal like you would remember, especially since this'll be your resting place!"

"T-Think again, Razwog! I-I already beat your bots!"

Razwog snickered at the Recruit's hollow threats.

"You've faced NOTHING unlike what you'll be facing here, especially when it's powered by the artifact! BATTLEPOD, KILL!"

The Hulking machinery sprung to life as it began attacking Sarons, who began firing back. The Black energy balls were simple to dodge, though a bit of an annoyance. The real problem was how he couldn't deal any damage!

"Rhendon, this thing isn't hurt by anything! I don't know what to do!"

"Machinery like that uses a lot of power, Sarons! Wait until it needs to recha--AGH!"

The Feed cut off. Sarons looked through a hole in the ceiling. It was night time. Suddenly, the machine finally lost enough power for the shield to break. Sarons, with renewed valor, began to strike at the defenseless Battlepod, barely hesitating. It wasn't enough, though, as the machine turned back on, the shield raising once more. The same old song and dance played out once more, as Sarons slashed at the Battlepod once again, this time managing to destroy it. The resulting surge of energy caused a computer in Razwog's control room to explode.

"AGH! Curses...I'll have your head next time, you heat-powered bucket of bolts!"

The Schemer ran off, as Sarons stood over the remains of the behemoth.

"Y-You did it...we're free!"

Sarons turned back to Lynn, who had gotten up from her hiding spot.

"...Yeah...but the Rescue Camp..."

"Wait, Rescue Camp? There are survivors?!"

"There will be if we hurry...did you happen to see some sort of artifact?"

"I-It's up ahead, sir."

"...Just call me Sarons, I'm just a recruit."

The two ran ahead, finding the Artifact. Sarons could feel the pulsating energy emanating from the object. Placing it on his back, he felt an intense surge in his power, as if he could take on even the most stalwart of foes! He looked back at Lynn. The Analyzon seemed happy. They could finally be free again...

"Be careful on the way back, Lynn. Just follow me, and we'll be fine."

"You've got it, si--Sarons. I won't let you down!"

Sarons gave off an emotion similar to smiling, as they walked away from the facility with Lynn.

He hoped it wasn't too late back at the camp.

Interlude: Old Friends / Chapter 3: Possible Knowledge

(I seriously need to get my schedule in check.)

Interlude: Old Friends

"INCOMING!"

"Shoot! They're over here, too!"

"Where the hell did you guys go?! I can't see a thing out--AAAGH!"

The violent death screams of multiple unfortunate Knights, the roaring of many ravenous monsters, the sight of...nothing...Night had come, and the camp was fending the enemy off as best as they could.

Rhendon stood unwavering, in the midst of it all, ready to face anything...except for what he had encountered next.

A sudden monster burst from the shade, a sword in hand, and clashed with Rhendon's shield! Pushing him back, Rhendon fired his Blitz Needle, a few of the shots landing themselves in the enemy's arm. He reloaded as the foe charged back at him, knocking the gun out of Rhendon's hand, to which he responded with a swift kick to the chest, causing the opponent to lose grip of their sword. The two unarmed, they both stood up, getting a good look at each other.

"...You..."

He could have sworn he saw a familiar face...but that was impossible, he was killed in the last raid.

The two exchanged glares, before the strangely familiar beast rushed away.

"RHENDON!"

He heard a voice, and from a hill, he saw a shining blue light...and with said light was a Recruit, and another knight.

-- -- -- --

Chapter 3: Possible Knowledge

The artifact was set up, and with it, automatic defenses powered on. Knights rejoiced as the automatic turrets set up blasted the beasts they once feared to bits. Everybody took a moment to honor the fallen knights who had lost their lives before seeing the Artifact's potential. As the higher ups linked up with Spiral HQ, the others in the camp celebrated, partying through the night, some even placing bets on which turrets would rack up the most kills by the time the sun rose.

Meanwhile, Lynn was receiving repairs, as Sarons waited alongside Rhendon.

"This...Analyzon," Rhendon spoke up. "I've never seen anything like it before. There wasn't any data on it on the ship."

"It must be a prototype...but it looked like it was there for way longer than any of us." Sarons responded.

"We'll have our answers eventually. As for this artifact..." Rhendon looked over at the Artifact, which stood in the middle of the base. "...We'll definitely need to examine it a lot more. We've been receiving reports of a safe place to the north, Haven is what they call it. Once we're all set, we're going to head there, with the Artifact, in hopes of finding out what the deal is with it. We're not sure what's up ahead, but if what you told me about this 'Razwog' guy is true, we're likely to find him on the trek. But you've got some skill in that swordplay, I'm sure this won't be too tough."

"Yes sir."

Lynn's repairs were finished, as she stood up from the boxes she had rested on, looking at the two.

"So...that's where you're headed? Haven?" She spoke.

"Yeah. Know the place?" Sarons responded.

"I've been there. I've actually been on this planet for a while...I was sent as a scouting unit by the Skylark, before the crash happened. I was able to make my way around, and was about to send a report...when I was attacked by something...I woke up, heavily damaged, in that facility...it was like I was bait, as if that artifact wasn't enough. I...I owe you guys one, for saving me. I'll help you two out with traversing to Haven."

"Much appreciated. We'll need all the help we can get. So, Sarons, I guess you're ready to go whenever."

"Yes sir...though it wouldn't hurt to join in on the celebrations, now would it?"

Rhendon gave a laugh, as Sarons got up to join the fun, Lynn following suit...Rhendon would have joined...but that mysterious figure in the night stayed in his mind...who were they?

-- -- -- --

"...They have the Artifact."

"WHAT?!"

"Some boltbrain managed to snatch it from the facility, I tried to stop him but he destroyed the Battlepod defense systems!"

"You idiot..." The voice hissed. "That Artifact is important...how could you just let it fall into the enemy's hands?!"

"I would've smashed the scrapheap but I couldn't get to him in time...I'll get him this time, for sure!"

"You had better...otherwise you'll be facing something worse than death by their hands. Do whatever it takes, burn down the path to the Strangers if you must! Just GET THAT ARTIFACT BACK!"

"Urk...! You got it, sir...I won't letcha down!"

The Schemer stood there, and proceeded to yell at his cohort in the silent room.

"Ooh, 'Razwog, you should've killed the thing!' Let's see you try to rush through a burning command console to go fight a robot! 'Get the artifact back, or it'll cost you greatly!' So did taking this bloody job from you! If I was still with the order by now, I'd...oh, forget it...better get these to the bridge, then..."

With that, Razwog began moving explosives into the Path to Haven...if those knights were gonna head there, he was gonna send them off with a fireworks show...

END OF CHAPTER 3

(To be continued/concluded in Chapter 4: Haven and Hell)

I seriously apologize to the 0.5 viewers who have been actively waiting for this. This has been pecking at the back of my mind for so long, and I've decided to finally get at it and continue the story. With these current matters on hand, now I don't have an excuse for being lazy and not finishing this. So consider this my apology, half of a viewer, for not making chapter 3 for over a year.

Chapter 4: Haven and Hell

Slash! Boom! Pew!

These were the noises heard as a trio of heroes struck their way through the pathway to Haven. They had heard all the stories last night, the Strangers who lived there, the always busy auctions, even some guilds they had been invited into. Sarons was excited to see what Haven held for him, though his mind was mainly set on simply surviving until they get there. Lynn was fearful of what awaited the team in the pathway. While there was just some easily disposed of enemies, these places were always dangerous when you least expected it. Rhendon, meanwhile, simply focused on up ahead.

"We're nearly there...how're you two holding up?" Rhendon finally spoke up, breaking the silence.

"I'm good, a few hits here and there, but I'm intact."

"Same here." Lynn was not as accustomed with combat, thus, they stuck to the back, fending off anything that neared the trio. They were making good progress, artifact in hand. They'd be in Haven in no time!

-- -- -- --

"Is everything ready?"

Schemer Razwog watched over things, as multiple Lumbers set up explosives. Enough bombs to blow the entire bridge apart if not careful.

"Hahaha...I can't wait to see the look on his face when I get him that artifact! Hee hee...and I especially can't wait for the look on their faces...when I blow them right off their bodies!"

The Gremlin cackled, before checking the explosives one last time.

-- -- -- --

"How far until we're there, Rhendon?" Sarons spoke, striking a Retrode down, before bashing another with his shield.

"Almost there...there's a fork in the road up ahead, but going straight ahead'll lead us right there...just past..."

Oh my.

"...All these bombs."

"What the..."

"Were the Strangers going to give us a fireworks show?" The trio huddled together.

"No...but there'll certainly be some BOOM!" A familiar sounding gremlin cackled as he stepped out in front of the team.

"Razwog! What do you want?!" Sarons raised his Proto Sword in defense.

"What do you think, scrapheap? That Artifact you've got there, of course!"

"We outnumber you 3 to 1, Gremlin! Stand down!" Rhendon stepped forward, Blitz Needle aimed at Razwog.

"Ah ah ah...we better not make any rash decisions! 'Sides, I'd rather not set these bombs off...so, what'll it be? The Artifact or the junkyard?"

"..."

The trio stared, as Razwog aimed his flamethrower towards one of the bombs.

"...We don't have a choice..." Lynn spoke up.

"...Alright, Razwog. You can have the artifact."

Rhendon placed the artifact down and stepped back, Razwog cackling as he nabbed it.

"Hahahaha! I wasn't expecting you to actually comply, but I guess machines have to follow orders! Though I think a little payback is in order...for how you made a fool out of me!"

Razwog lit one of the bombs, before running off.

"NO!"
"NO!"
"NO!"

BOOM!

The entire pathway was in ruin, parts blown off in the massive detonation, the entire pathway in flames.

"...Oh no..."

"We need to get out of here, NOW!" Rhendon yelled to the others, not even sure if they were alive, having thankfully gotten the slip from the explosion's damage.

...

"R-Roger, sir!" Lynn's voice was heard over the crackling flames.

Lynn was currently trying to help get some rubble off of Sarons, who, while still intact, was pretty badly damaged by the explosion.

"This place is going down, fast! You two need to hurry, there's not much time left before the entire place burns down! I'll wait up ahead!"

As Sarons rose out of the rubble, he struggled to his feet.

"C'mon! We can check the damage later, right now we're gonna end up as part of the rubble if we don't get out of here!"

"R-Roger...!" Sarons and Lynn followed after Rhendon, trying to keep out of the flames. While there were still some machines around, they weren't as dangerous as the destructive flames that littered the pathways. However, the duo were able to rendezvous with Rhendon, and the trio encountered Razwog once more.

"K-Keh...?! You all should be dead! I BLASTED YOU ALL TO BITS!"

"Should've made sure, Razwog! Now give it up, you've got nowhere to run!"

"Hee hee...you really think that I'd run?! It's about time I finally get my hands dirty...I'll make you all pay for messing with a Schemer!"

Razwog set off his flamethrower, cackling as he let the flames fly around. The trio, however, was not deterred, raising their weapons against Razwog.

"I'll make sure you suffer for your insolence! Keheheheheh!"

The trio rushed at Razwog, as various constructs charged forth. The blazing battlefield was filled with noise, slashing and clanking, explosions and flames...Sarons rushed forth, striking at Razwog. Slashing at the gremlin, Razwog was hit, before retaliating with more fire, a wall of flames dividing him and Sarons, as a Lumber struck at Sarons. This, however, left Razwog open for Rhendon, who opened fire on the schemer.

"Ugh...you knights are rust in my gears...!"

He jumped to the side, before lighting Rhendon ablaze with his flamethrower, giving a nasty laugh as he did, before being cut off by a hit from Lynn's Slime Slasher.

"...You really think you stand a chance against me...?"

"I-I'm not afraid of you...not this time...!"

"You should be..."

He swatted Lynn to the side, grinning.

"LYNN!!"

Sarons, now angered, slashed away at the gremlin, slicing through the schemer's flamethrower, as well as across Razwog's chest.

"U-urrrgh..."

Badly damaged by the slash, Razwog collapsed to the ground.

"...It's over..."

Cleaning up the rest of the bots, Sarons and Rhendon took a moment to catch their breath, Sarons checking on Lynn, who was still alright. Hitting a robot with your bare hand won't do much damage.

"...Well...we made it! Haven's just up ahead..."

"Good...I think we could all use a break."

"...Nnngh...I was more thinking...breaking YOU!"

Razwog tackled Sarons, cackling as he held his broken flamethrower up.

"I'm not...done yet...! I'm taking you with me...for ruining EVERYTHING! I'll just...light my fuel...and BOOM...!"

Sarons couldn't reach his sword...was this it? He was gonna die, right there, just at the gates to Haven?

...

Of course not, this is a prequel.

Shhlck

"U-Urgh..."

Razwog fell to the side, Sarons' Proto Sword having been stabbed into Razwog's body by Lynn.

"...I told you...I'm not afraid of you...!"

Sarons sat back up.

"...Thanks for the save...I doubt that I'll be caught off guard again, though."

Sarons, you have no idea.

"...Well...Razwog's down for the count. And we got the artifact back!"

"I'd say today was a pretty big victory. Let's get going!"

The trio finally escaped the passage, coming across a clearing, where a Knight, as well as 3 lower ranking knights.

"I wasn't expecting recruits to emerge from that much destruction...you three must really be something! I'm Lieutenant Feron, by the way."

"It's an honor, sir." Sarons spoke. "...But, the others at the camp..."

"They'll be saved soon enough, recruit. You three just focus on bringing that Artifact to the base camp."

"Yes sir."

With that, the trio finally made it to Haven, successful in their journey.

But something stuck in Sarons' mind...a symbol on Razwog's outfit...a weird crimson one.

What did he even want with the Artifact, anyways?

-- -- -- --

"...That blasted Razwog...he's failed me again, and this time, he's let more of those machines into Haven!"

He paced back and forth, grumbling angrily about the artifact.

"...Mark my words...Razwog's death means nothing to me...I'll have that artifact, one way or another! Then finally...my plans shall take effect!"

Ending: New Heroes

(Let's finally get this dang story over with.)

The Journey was over. Our heroes had made it to Haven, the town of strangers. First things first, though, they needed to head to the lab, sending in the Artifact, being hailed by the scientists there. A pretty quick trip, but overall worth it. After that, the trio could finally wind down.

-- -- -- --

"You sure you don't want to join me down in the clockworks, Lynn?"

"Believe me, I'm done with being down there...I'll just stick around the lab, help out with matters here. 'Sides, you'll do fine down there, you made the trip here pretty easily, after all."

"Alright, well then, I'll see you around, Lynn."

"You too, Sarons."

With that, Sarons left, watching the sun set on Cradle. Rhendon soon accompanied him, the two laying back, hearing the sounds of the busy streets of Haven.

"...Nice town, eh?"

"Certainly is...definitely beats the rescue camp."

"Yeah...hopefully they're all getting out of there safely. How about you, Sarons?"

"Hm?"

"What're you gonna do now? Join us brains in the laboratory?"

"Nah, you should know by now that I think with a sword."

The two shared a laugh.

"...Not a bad first few days for a brand new recruit, eh?"

"Apprentice, now...those guys must've seen my potential."

"Huh...well take it from me, Sarons. You're gonna do something great down in the clockworks."

"Thanks, Rhendon. Though be sure to give me a holler if there's any new jobs you need me to do..."

"Sure thing...actually, come to think of it...when you're done looking around town, come by the lab. We might have a job for you...and a Battle Sprite..."

"...No way...!"

The two laughed once more, before giving their temporary farewells, as Rhendon walked back into the lab. Sarons realized today that he was no longer a fresh, green recruit...

He was going to be a Knight.

A Spiral Knight!

END

GOOD GOD I CAN FINALLY GET THIS OFF OF MY MIND. And maybe finally retire from this (Very short) career. Maybe I'll come back someday and make a third Spiral Log...probably not. I can't ever really keep a steady schedule going, and so I just keep forgetting about these. Thank you to the 0 people who waited to see the ending to this story. It was hard to finally work up the will to actually finish this, but I'm glad I did. And now, I rest for another 20 years...(Later!)
