2012 Spiral Knights Was great thats one of the many reasons why so many players left ;-;
Bring 2012 Spiral Knights BACK!
For once I mostly agree with Bopp, though I have to contest a few points:
The new contents aren't 'good', we got timed events, which could be nice since they drop some reward for those who participate, but with GH radio silence, they sort of shot themselves in the foot since people who care about the event but not the main part of the game have no clue when to come back.
The new missions didn't really expand the plot in any significant way, we are more or less at where we were five years ago. It is just now we know the fate of the Alpha squad. Or at least that is what Parma's drone wanted us to believe... if the danger mission GitM taught me anything is that machines can lie in SK.
The worst part is that now Herex is just some Saturday morning cartoon villain reject. I wished that GH simply never shown him ingame, giving him an aura of enigma, who is a schemer that can always stay one step ahead of the knights.
And I think Bopp's last statement is some sort of attempt at trying to alleviate responsibilities from GH's shoulder, there are many things (such as log in rewards and developer transparency) that GH/OOO could have done to keep the fan base engaged, but they decided to take the easy way out. They are not entirely innocent in the decline of this game.
Don't forget that there is unfinished water temple, maybe GH will take few days to finish it.
There are two rather large things 2012 SK has on us....
1.) Nick, who was presumably (I mean we don't know him) the leader and embodiment of the game.
2.) The original design philosophy, which was much more western and focused on the arcade
While I value the progress the game has made enormously I would definitely consider trading it for those two things back. They were what got me into Spiral Knights and why I stuck with it and because they're gone I sometimes think of leaving. It's really as simple as that.
I agree with Bopp. I can't say I've seen a game update that has made the game worse from its 2012 counterpart, but there have been a number of updates that have been neutral at best.
Only things I have gripes with in the game is the whole equinox/solstice boxes being standalone boxes despite having an in-game value from 80% of its box contents. I'm fine paying $5 for a chance at a maid headband that I don't want, but I'm not so fine paying $5 for a UV ticket that I do want, since the value is already defined as a lot lower. Energy would need to be below 1,250 crowns for a 1UV ticket to have the same value as its $5 box.
But alas, that is not a gameplay element. Gameplay-wise, the game has only gotten better. I can't even remember how the game was before dashing and bashing was a thing since it's so ingrained in my playstyle at this point.
Spiral Knights is better now than it was in 2012. Of course, there are complaints --- Radiants scarcity, old shard bombs, armor imbalance, etc. --- but generally there is more content now and it's mostly good.
The reason why players have left isn't that the game has gotten worse. It's that the game hasn't gotten better at a fast enough rate to keep them interested.
