Hello!

I am a Spiral Knights player since around who knows when, and around 3 years ago I became Vanguard. Something about Spiral Knights so re playable and the environment is just so great, you cant get these kind of experiences in games nowadays. Coming back into this community for a little gave me so much nostalgia, I wonder if a remake or a sequel could be possible! I'm sure somewhere somebody has mentioned this, but its so amazing how some people are still into this game, its just that wonderful! There are also some flaws that could be fixed, and an expansion to the masterpiece this game is would be wonderful.

What do you guys think?

Thinking is hard

As much as a sequel would be super cool, I don't think it's something that makes sense for Spiral Knights. Instead of making a whole new game it would make more sense to take everything that would go into a SK 2 and just incorporate it into the current SK. Although I will say that the one nice thing a sequel would be is it not being made in Java.

Maybe not a sequal persay. . .

Now making a Spiral knights 2 wouldn't neccessarily be a sequal, but maybe an overhaul of sorts. Right now the games content is locked in a closed cycle of renamed, retextured, and/or reused ideas. Prize boxes, slightly altered equipment, and cosmetics, level designs and minor variations between new and old enemies/mechanics. The best of which are usually only ever available once in a blue moon, while the rest is just out of reach enough that most

Back on subject, I have seen several games in the past even before playing spiral knights whos sequals weren't so much continuations, but reboots. Mere fundamental Redesigns, rather than trying to make a shiny new piece of machinery mesh and function in an otherwise rusty and essentially alien construct. Kind of like sticking a brand new computer system in modern cars in to one of those antique cars you have to wind a crank wheel around the back just to get the engine started up. . .
Instead of Spiral Knights 2, perhaps it could simply be dubbed a new version. Knights of Spiral, or Spiral Knights:Recharged.

All of my idea storming aside, it really comes down to what the current overseers are both capable, and willing to consider, and whether or not the legal controls are in us the fans favor or not. ALL of which needs to be actively and openly asked of and thoroughly understood if we all want this game to not just continue, but to actually grow.

After I look through the forums some more, since I've been out of the loop of the game for some years, I may open a thread to spark some debate/ideas.

(Sorry for rambling. . .)

When the Binding of Isaac got too big to work on they ported it to another language and improved it so that it could handle more content added on. This is what we need but not what we'll get. The difference is that Isaac was a tiny little single player experience and SK is an MMORPG, which is naturally going to be a massive nightmare to work on.

You have a point-

Yeah, its that online part that complicates things. Cut internet access or the machinery that hosts the entire games existence period, everything drops. Maybe if they were able to integrate a single player avenue? Its a stretch, I know, and one that would require a lot more extensive insight on the functions of game engineering to even speculate the realistic chances of pulling off. Obviously requires a lot more complex redesigning of the games general structure game play wise.

Also, its definitely to early to propose the idea necessarily, but as long as we're talking about it, it could bring up other ideas, or inspire tweaks some how. You know, like inventing the light bulb. You have to find a millions ways how not to make a light bulb work before you actually invent it. :)

If we ever get SK2 I would personally prefer if it is a brand new game that can standalone from SK. A new game with brand new mechanics that tells a new story, like a prequel that covers the stories of Morai war. And them GH can use this new game to advertise for SK.

I am also curious about how the Morai War would be covered.

I am fairly certain that an expansion to a game would need to pertain to the game itself instead of being considered a proper standalone sequel. As for an entirely new game, what exactly is the general consensus on player expectations? If one says more of the same, is it pertaining to the style? The content? The core gameplay? The simplicity this game currently adheres for its limitations?

If we are going for a sequel, how do we manage following up the story if SK itself has no proper ending or closing cliffhanger to fulfill its own story with? Defeating Vanaduke through the mission only rewards the player with the Vanguard rank and being told that there will be more to come while also going back to our usual routine. Then, later on, we are pinned with an order of urgency that will be unfolded later. Not much more details, it is just another waiting session until it comes full circle. I believe this is the main hurdle to pass through before setting up a true sequel.

As far as I know, the game never really suggests (sincerely suggests) the player to rest after their effort in the end. Not even once, even after six years. After all the feedback provided targeting game content, has anyone ever brought up the concern that the game has yet to decide when and how to roll the credits for the player?

heh

You know, Midnight and I can agree that a Morai Wars prequel would be amazing for Spiral Knights. If we were to get a sequel, I'd prefer a sequel with the current mechanics and all that to be a "remastered" version of the game, and then create updates after that.

Granted my vision of such a prequel is more of a third person game with a similar combat style, but instead of a top down camera perspective it's behind the player. For current dungeon delving, the top down is nice, but for a literal war prequel I'd love to see some more interesting combat moves.

Something with less netcode stuttering and memory leaks would be a big ol' plus. The base game for SK is pretty solid, it's simply a few technical hiccups (that are actually being worked on, which is wonderful ♥) that hold it back from being rock solid.

A few technical hiccups

There are a couple different kinds of "a few technical hiccups" that you can work on for these...
1.) The kind that are fairly separate from everything, and can be changed on a whim.
2.) The kind that are interconnected and tightly coupled to the entire project, that can't be changed on a whim without great effort.

Most things start as number one, but then you add another layer, like missions, or events, or guild halls that take materials, and things start to get really messy and suddenly you have number two everywhere. SK has changes fundamentally as an experience several times, and this really doesn't help its code... and I'm not insulting the developers, quite the opposite- they're experts to have kept it living this long.

This is why I want a recode of the Spiral Knights project. It would take a couple of years or even longer than that, but it would be necessary to REALLY solve the big underlying technical issues Spiral Knights has.
