New players NEED to learn to shield bump enemies ASAP and often don't equip iron buckler etc. right off the bat.
Give proto shield the ability to knock enemies back

Interesting, though this is a serious problem that I've observed with new players I've been watching play recently. The mechanic swap to defender comes a bit too late, and requires upwards of 3 brain cells to click and equip the defender, which is rather poor.
Perhaps a better solution would be a new shield line that lacks knockback? It would go from 3 star to 5 star, and could mimic omega shell.. or just come in various types.

You know, a swiftstrike buckler upgrade that lost shield bump ability as it upgraded would actually be pretty useful. Having it lose some of its ASI to medium and then perhaps branch off to ASI: med, sword ASI: high, gun ASI: high variants while retaining its new defenses at 5*.
I do agree that early on players do not learn about the shield bump mechanic, and perhaps giving them a brief tutorial on the matter would be helpful. For example, a static mewkat may spawn in the player's way and an arsenal station is nearby. Rhendon informs the player about shield bumping can prevent knights from killing certain targets and also push enemies away from them, and gives them an iron buckler.
Introducing the player to advanced techniques via a short tutorial mission (shield canceling, shield bumping) may give players that extra push they need to try and find additional ways to play the game.
No please... I like it without the knockback, I use it to simulate striker boost when training for LD or wanna have some fun. It's a nice feature in it. Also, in case you didn't know, new players get the Defender shield early-game.
