The announcement page says the anniversary event ends on the 25th, and suddenly I can't do the two missions. There was no announcement or mention of the missions no longer being available, what gives? I have 42 cake slices and I can't afford to buy 18 more. What a ripoff!

Missing dates
They forget to post when events end lately. However you could check prestige missions every day if they will be available tomorrow or check Cake Slice's description. There is a notice they'll expire on the 16th. Still, they should be posting that info in the first place.

If I would have been informed of their expiration, I would have played more, but I've had a busy week, and they weren't clear about the mission ending which is not my fault.

Completely agreeing with you in that regard, that's why I played a lot during the first five or so days to get my hat.
And sorry if what I wrote bugged you, that's my fault for not expressing very well, I really hear that a lot outside of the game :(

I'm pretty sure that it refers to the surprise box promo.
About the cake slices, that's entirely your fault(wording may be wrong, as I don't know your situation, so I apologise) for either arriving late to the event and/or not going farm them in the arcade when they were available.
