Alright so this has nothing to do with the gameplay of SK but I'm just gonna give my two cents on how lootboxes should work in this game, since SK has been on that lootbox train since before lootboxes became a big talking point. Not always the most positive talk, but y'know, that's the free to play lifestyle. Here's some suggestions:
1. Make lockboxes from the prize wheel drop more often. More boxes = more keys = more people trading = more people buying energy = more people active.
2. Prize boxes (the ones you pay money for) need to cost a bit less. Other games have boxes with way cooler stuff for half as much. People would buy way more, and things are so rare anyway I don't think it'd really ruin the economy for rare items anyway. It'd just be more cool stuff for more people to get their hands on, and the AH traders would just settle on different, but still very high prices.
3. Make them full of goodies. It needs to feel like the holidays. Gimme a % chance lucky roll on a UV ticket + 1 guaranteed accessory + 1 guaranteed costume + confetti + whatever small throwaway items you can put in 'em (a couple tokens, a few crowns in the 100s, some energy in the 10s) per box.
4. Rerun old prize boxes more often, maybe as side events alongside new ones, or as reruns for energy in the supply depot, or put a few of them in the AH trading co. pool of exclusives every once in a while to get people excited, like... "fan favorites" collections based on polls or something. The only people who'd get mad about this are costume gatekeepers or people trying to run their 4+ year old accessories for ludicrous amounts of crowns on the AH.
5. Include some way to earn one free prize box per event per person. Give all people online during the event a freebie as long as they meet some basic requirement. These could even be watered down versions that can't give UV tickets and only have 1 item in them, but it'd be a nice way for free players to get a taste of the event prize pool and feel like they participated in some way.
6. Adjust the odds just a bit. Not too much, just a bit, a percent or two for the rarest thing.
I think this'd get more players 1. boosting the in game economy 2. boosting the number of people playing consistently 3. boosting the money GH gets overall (even with boxes costing less) 4. boosting reasons for GH to implement other updates because of those 3 factors. (active player base + more funds)
I say this because as it is now, boxes are absolutely in the "not even worth it in the slightest" camp of purchases (for me at least). I think it is for most people. I personally pay up a bit for energy every few months, but the boxes are out of the question. At the same time I recognize that boxes are never gonna leave this game, it's just how it is as a free to play MMO. If you can't get rid of 'em, you might as well make them reasonably enticing to meet the standards of other games in 2018. I think this is honestly the best way to actually get players in with the lowest amount of effort outside of adding major updates, and might lead to a point where major updates become plausible and worth the consideration because of greater activity in the first place.
As someone that buys SK's lootboxes I don't buy them to get the big pulls I buy them to show support and get some of the smaller "trash" pulls. For me it's less an act of greed and more an act of love.
That being said, it would be VERY nice if I got my money's worth out of these... I know a lot of whales that have switched to other games because lets face it, Spiral Knights is an expensive hobby... much more expensive than it ought to be.
