So the average energy gate costs 3 energy and has 2 red boxes behind it, right?

Seems like a bad deal, but technically:

Let's say for argument's sake you get a set of shinings every 3 gates you open (9 energy).

Shinings come in sets of 3, and are sold 50 for 350 energy.
Quick maths:
350 * (3/50) = 21
So each set of shinings is worth 21 energy.

This technically means that in tier 3, you'd have to get no rarities for 7 gates straight for it to be "not worth it".
And in the case I said earlier you're essentially saving 12 energy.

So yeah, you should actually open gates (even if it means putting your energy at a non-round number)

(everyone already knew this already didn't they)

Well, the crowns that drop from monsters alone are enough profit, I think they drop about 400-1200cr per room in T3 I think. I usually just do them for the fun of it TBH. The radiant pay in them is pretty decent as well. But yeah, I agree that opening an energy gate is never "not worth it" unless it just leads to a few boxes below D26 or is at T2. But I don't agree with your Shinning Fire Crystal argument as they are almost totally useless end-game.

Edit: Oops, I thought you were talking about danger rooms... But really, why would Shinning Fire Crystals matter to a vanguard if they can't benefit from them because they already have tons and they can't sell them?

You're assuming that the energy depot prices for crystals are reasonable baselines for their worth. They're not.

Yeah, fire crystals are verrrrrry overpriced in the Supply Depot, even moreso than buying gear from it.

That being said, since loot is effectively multiplied by the number of players in your party while the energy costs remain constant, it can be worth opening gates with 4 (or even 2) boxes behind them if everyone takes turns paying the opening fee. In practice, I'm too lazy to actually do this, but if you want to maximize your loot in a party, it's always an option.

I know they're stupid overpriced, but that's what the game says they're worth so that's what I'm using to calculate it.

Even if you divide their worth by 10 it's still only a *slight* loss opening the gate, and you still get crowns and such so it's never completely worthless.

(only mostly)

2 boxes... You still have a high chance to get crowns or heat... And even if you're not fully 5* yet I advise you not to open the gate for shinnies at all. I'd rather run the first depth of terminal meltdown for shinnies, ask someone od high rank to invite you if they're free. I usually had some friends help me when I was on my alt.

depends

If you're after shining fire crystals, it's usually not worth it since they drop starting at the end of tier 2 and then throughout all of tier 3. When you net around 50-60 shinings per full tier 3 arcade run, opening the gates isn't really needed.

If you're after radiants though, you should always open a gate that radiants can show up behind if you cannot break the boxes beforehand. Alchemer charges are notoriously good for breaking boxes that are out of reach, along with vials for certain ones that are farther away.

That said, prices of energy gates depend entirely on where you are at in the game. I have over 100,000 shining fire crystals, meaning even if they are worth some energy amount, I have zero reason to open the energy gate for 12 shinings and some heat.

"I have over 100,000 shining fire crystals..."

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why fire crystals are picked up bound.

Well, most vanguards who actually still craft stuff have over 3-9k I have like 7-8k only because I keep crafting and vendoring stuff when I get bored of it then craft it again etc. Stupid yeah but a good way to keep you working on this game lol. I have crafted and sold every 5* bomb related item in the game to vendors except celestial vortex (sold for 44ke), electron vortex (5.5ke), kat hiss raiment (20ke), kat hiss cowl, mercurial demo set, obsidian crusher, cause I still have those. The surprising thing is that I'm crafting some more bombs for LD now... I'm an idiot lol.

In other words

In all honesty it is not really worth hassle. Not having a full 100 or 25s of energy is annoying to be able to buy things you need from the depot.

Simply:

-Never buy crystals

-Farm fire crystals by missions. For rarity drops pick the mission with the most amount of treasure boxes per minute (making sure you're within the correct range of depths).
OR JUST FARM CROWNS doing The King of Ashes, this is where the majority of shinings and radiants come from since you will need crowns for everything else (its best to farm multiple things in a mission when it comes to grindfest in any game.).
I mostly buy orbs from farming crowns too.

Also you could do the daily danger mission with someone for the truckload of treasure boxes at the end.

-When you encounter boxes behind energy gate, break them first with vials or alchemers, it is actually worth it if useful orbs drop.

But of course this is a matter of grind efficiency. You don't have to farm in these missions if you choose not to; this results in less progression rate though.
