I played this game like 4 or more years ago. Back then we all wondered if the core will be ever opened. So... did anything happen while i was gone?

The post-vanguard mission "Dreams and Nightmares" has you and Vaelyn following Alpha Squad's footsteps into the core.
That said, it's just one mission. A fun mission IMO, and a rather challenging one too. It's also one of the best Rads/minute sources in the game, so you can sometimes find a well-oiled DaN grinding team to turn the thing into a breeze.
