What equipment should I buy if I'm just starting out?

I'm just starting out, and I basically have standard gear. I want to change that.
But before I go and buy some new shiny gear, I want to know what recommendations I can get.

Play style aside, should I save up and get a high level weapon? Or, should I buy a medium level weapon and then a high level weapon to make my life a bit easier? What kind of weapon should I get?

What guns should I buy? Should I even buy guns, or should I buy bombs?

I'm used to games where status effect resistance is just icing on the cake, and that it should be taken lightly. Is this also true for Spiral Knights? Are all of these elemental armors useful to me? Are there any pieces of armor that i should try to get as soon as possible?

I have a lot of questions and I can't wait to get some answers. Thanks!

I would recommend finding a

I would recommend finding a low-mid level weapon and then finding the recipes to upgrade it. This way you can raise the chance of getting an interesting unique as you alchemise the upgrades. Also, it's generally cheaper to you.

To be honest, you have to discover your play style on your own. People can tell you what weapons are supposedly best, but if they don't fit you it's all for naught.

For certain status resistances, as far as the current game goes I'd recommend stun and fire. Stun is aggravating and fire can to a lot of damage if you're not careful. Other types have yet to be fully fleshed out by the enemy types.

You'll find some equipment,

You'll find some equipment, dropping from defeated enemies and popping out of treasure boxes. You don't need to buy much yet.

Weapons have a light-medium-heavy distribution. You'll figure out soon enough which you prefer. You'll also figure out which enemies you find the easiest/hardest to deal with. Choose weapons/gear appropriately. :)

I'd suggest trying to pick

I'd suggest trying to pick weapons that will be upgradeable, that way you won't really feel like you're wasting money buying a lower level item since you'll be able to upgrade it into a better one as you progress.

Cutters and Autoguns are both fairly popular, with great upgrade paths to choose from. When you're deciding on recipes in a terminal, a good thing to do is search for them on the wiki to see what they require/what upgrades they have to see if it interests you.
