So let me start out by saying that I am in love with this wand of mine. I am always a big fan of magical related gear in games and now Spiral Knights has a weapon that truly feels like the tool of a mage. It is awesome!
That being said, it is awesome but impractical. While I won't say that it is inherently bad, it is a half-reskin of the Nova Driver after all, it certainly lacks a lot of the qualities that make Drivers fun and powerful weapons to use. It has a lot of weaknesses and not many strengths when compared to the Nova Driver.
An upside is the primary gimmick of course. It is a "gun" that you never need to reload. And again I will mention that this is a Nova Driver, it has a LOT of power. Despite these two pretty significant pluses, the downsides drastically outweigh the ups. You are rooted in place while firing, the attack speed is somewhat slower than the Nova Driver, and the charge attack requires a Sealed Sword style swing before it launches the attack rendering it much slower and riskier than a Driver.
If you know how to switch shoot the only thing the primary attack of the wand has going for it over the Nova Driver is ease of use. This is pretty nice. Simply swishing a wand around without worrying about the pause to reload can be relaxing. But then again, if you do know how to switch shoot there is no reason to use the wands over a Driver unless you really just don't care enough to be fighting at your best. The charge attack is blatantly worse than the Nova Driver. It is the same thing but slower.
How would I go about fixing this? There are a couple of ways to do so without needing to dramatically change up the weapon:
1. Allow players to move around while firing the wand along with the infinite clip, but keep the reduced speed on basic attacks and charge attacks. This would render it an easier to use Driver with overall lower offensive and defensive potential.
2. The thing swings around like a sword. Lets make it one. Or more specifically, a magical gun sword. All Grey Havens would need to do is take a lesson from the Tortoguns and put a melee strike on the weapon. This is what I would prefer to see happen as it would make sense with the animation as well as give the wand much more utility. It would be a clumsier version of a Nova Driver but you could break objects more easily and score some extra damage in close encounters.
There are surely many other options, but these are the two that really strike me as simple but good ideas. No matter what happens, I just pray that these wands get a bit of a boost. Maybe this is all my fault because I haven't discovered the ultimate secret to spell casting, but I don't see myself using the wands over my Driver in any serious situation the way they are now.
I was thrilled at the first moment I acquired the wand. However, when I put the wand into test, for a second it was a Nova Driver since the projectile and the hit style was the same, but things got worse, as Bamzalot mentioned cannot move while shooting, and a longer charge casting time.
I am not here to repeat him, in my opinion, for general audience (which exclude advanced combat tactics), unless you are REALLY like the wand or role-play purposes, you have nearly zero condition to get it since the overall attack speed, attack strength, charge speed, cast speed, and mobility is inferior to that of a Nova Driver.
Although it has many downside, we still do like this weapon, and wish it for some positive performance modification to attract players to get them. I do agree Bamzalot's first suggestion but a bit reserved for the second. As it is a "wand", it may not be designed for physical melee combat, but I do have an alternative suggestion of swinging the wand cause a minor knockback of enemies.
