Hey! In our crusade to make our game appear more interesting and active, here's a suggestion.

Why don't we reduce the number of haven servers available for Spiral knights.
Also, lets merge the zone chat for all the haven servers into one. The appearance of number of people standing in haven affects the game a lot. We continually lose the opportunity of new players and returning players to stick around, when they see a haven with 4 people, and then assume the game is empty and quit.

So if we are nicely cozy with our people stacked in few servers we look healthier. Plus, people selling stuff have greater visibility, zone chat looks more used. Happy days for all

For complaints regarding lag caused due to higher population, I think that's a concern for few years ago when the population was 5-10 times higher. Right now, having all people clustered in fewer servers will not raise the pop enough to cause lag. I would even go as far to make that ONE server, but hey.

I find that global/zone chat is far less sales based with idle healthy chatter in other games, can you guys provide input as far as why you think that is the case? How can we better utilize server chat for a fresh sense of life? What do you think is the answer?

i somehow like the idea but the problem comes with "some people" in the community, in the past, the glorious days of the game spanish haven used to be lot crowded and the next thing im going to say its not with the intent to be racist or something, but sometimes brazilian players used to come heaven and always ask "br??" which is their way to ask if you are from brasil, when they asked me that to me i usually says "Lo siento pero no soy de brasil / sorry but im not from brasil" or "solo hablo español o ingles pero no portugues / i only talk spanish or english but not portuguese" and they always insulted me back (because you can understand their insult as they are not different from spanish).

but leaving that besides which could be a minor issue i think the real problem is community behavior to new players, i mean one day i just went to english haven to see if there new players prolly need help with a mission or boss i saw 2 players chatting, i dont remember most of the chat, but basically resumes on new player looking for power orbs while "vanguard" player told him that orbs drops in levels or he can buy some from him for 22k cr, despite the new player clearly says he needed power orbs (or red orbs) and 22k cr were too much for 1 orb the vanguard player just told him he was a noob and he wouldnt get it for 2-3k cr from another player. then the new player just log off (as i tried to whisper him and got the this player isnt online message) we cant expect new players last longer in the game if there is such toxic community i know not everyone are like that. i know also new players arent little angels but the ones that really want to play and learn from the game should get a more supportive community and not just closed to "hey join my discord and you will find people there!" i know is useful and all, but we should be helpful with or without discord regardless the person want to join or not.

if we want the game look healthier we should start on being a healthier community, if we look for someone asking help we can always tell them with what they need help?:

helping in missions
need carry to vana < no, we shouldnt make players vanadicts, we should teach them if there isnt a guildie to carry them trough it (or their friends) they still can make cr not so fas as vana but they still can instead idling waiting for someone or log off cuz they cant get their vanameth dosis of day. this is just my opinion we can differ, but i feel most of the game magic died when vana mission was just available for 1 button 8k cr easy. most players dont want to play anything else if isnt vana. want you to leave in vana lobby? welp i guess we can, if they ask that maybe they can run the mission alone.

Need help with missions like fall or rise, alone in the darkness etc any mission? < yes i remember a lot of people in haven asking "hey can you help me with this mission i tried and i cant i dont want to spent more sparks, they tried and still fail to do the mission" giving them at hand isnt bad.

answering their doubts and questions without telling them "hey join discord and we can tell you" we shouldnt condition an answer behind something, just guide them tell them later if they want to friend you or joning discord by their own will its ok, i have meet a lot of people that just were forced to join discord just to get the answers their need for the game and never talk in discord or just leave both game and discord. its not the same:
"hey i want to know something" "oh sure its like this and that but on discord you might find more info" "but why i cant just get the info here now? why do i have to download a program to just get an answer?" "dunno but thats how it works"

than "hey i want to know something" "sure, you can do it this and that and if that not work prolly you need this and that but there also another options and bla bla" "oh nice! thank you, hey if i have more doubts can i add you?" "sure! you can friend me or addme here or if you have discord or steam you can add me too".

and *sigh* sorry for the long wall text

TL;DR: if we want a more healthier game, besides asking GH to do something we also should start for being a better community for new and old players.

We don't need new players. They basically just sort of leave after barely giving the game a chance and have no way to actually catch up to experienced players, which means instead of more friends to play with we just end up with a bunch of people begging in haven and they ask me what they should do and how to play and what items are and it's like what do I tell them, that all my stuff came from boxes and gambling? Like wow wow wow no its better to just have a few indoctrinated players and stuff.

Besides Sweet-Hope notes, this looks right. We don't need so many channels with a lower population.

@Promos-Are-Content
And you ask why people shouldn't take in account what you say. No one falls on your propaganda. Get out of here.

I'd leave if there weren't people reading me but-

Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me!!!!!!

But seriously though and I'm trying to be nice but every day I stray further from the light, like I don't mean what I write literally and if you cannot tell that I don't really have a problem with that or you, I just think it's funny because I'm an EXCELLENT PERSON.

I would love to have new players but there's no real point when-

A) There is a huge and inescapable inequality gap due to UVs, black kat, mixmaster/orbit which are a big part of the meta, even cosmetics.. between myself and anyone that didn't start 5 years ago + spend money, new players have to stay and "be bad" to "feed" older players, as if by design

B) The game plays kind of like a linear all combat Zelda, which is great but most people play Zelda for like 80 hours and are done with it when SK you can go a thousand hours and still not have all the gear. It's frustrating for newer players to hit wall after wall when they're capable of progressing but the game says no.

C) The modern concept of "games" is not a game that you play once and are done any longer but rather a playable media platform and games like Fortnite pull it off flawlessly. In order for you to have that you need stuff to be happening in game constantly. Not just black kat, and not just promos, and not just one somewhat huge and wonderful update every two years that doesn't even apply to everyone.

Our developers want to be wiggly snakes capable of draining the world of money with their whimsical gambling boxes, but they're objectively bad at it because they have a heart that can be broken and because they lost their leader and all of this as evidenced by the bit where half the GMs lost their jobs etc. I don't blame or mean to insult them here, there's nothing wrong with being a snake because "capitalism made me do it" is a great excuse, kind of like "the devil made me do it" is a great excuse to eat chocolate cake.

D) Spiral Knights is really not beginner friendly in terms of gear. We have like 20 or so armor sets that are basically just random and have no business being in the game for people to choose from, and one weapon (blitz) that everyone is basically required to get so that they can beat a certain boss, and again, black kat armor that people need events to craft and UVs and all of that nonsense keeping them from making optimal loadouts and planning around that. The concept of planning so that you don't have a grind can be kind of fun but IDK it feels out of place to me when weapons are a huge bit of content.

I could go on but I've said all of this over the years and it's just beating a dead horse at this point.

We're talking a good hundred plus suggestions I've written. I could literally write a novel, heck, I even wrote two posts titled that, about Spiral Knights.

Here, read this- https://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/53465

That's what I used to write.

A lot of the commentators were my friends...

Just leave me alone man, it's sad going back and seeing all the people that left, ok?

@Fehzor
I feel bad for you. Must be hard to see old comments of friends that left. And I know you are kidding about promos and stuff. I just got on board of your play and act as you were serious.

I kind of felt for a moment that a daily login reward system could be a good idea for new players, giving one or two orbs for free each day or each week. The next contests that GH organize could give promo weapons as a reward as well.

daily rewards; load balancing

We used to have a massive daily reward: energy, in the form of mist energy. Now our daily reward is prestige --- if you care enough about prestige to complete the prestige missions.

If the goal is to keep players in the game, then I agree that daily rewards are good. On the other hand, I'm not sure that's a noble goal. I mean, if a player doesn't truly enjoy the game anymore, then maybe they shouldn't be "tricked" into playing it.

Back to the topic: Don't the SK servers automatically load-balance the Haven instances? I mean, if there are only two instances' worth of knights in Haven, then aren't they all in two instances, with the other instances left empty? Is this thread's point that the empty instances shouldn't appear at all?

Digitalis... No... Atrophine! NOW

Bopp, I didnt think about daily rewards. That's a very interesting point, I think it is probably even more pivotal than the appearance of how many people are online.

Anyhow, I dont think SK servers load balance. But if they do, we are probably at a certain minimum amount right now, and reducing the number is kinda necessary. I think we should have just two if people dont like seeing languages they dont understand. One for english speaking and the other listed as "Global". Or just have one server. I don't mind either.

As for Promo's points. I think what is relevant to our topic is that, "there's so much in this game that is beginner unfriendly that our idea is not likely to change much". And He's kinda right! But we should consider this regardless, because this is probably relevant enough to make the game better for current players too. And ofc, Rome was not conquered in a single day, but was in millions of seconds. Tiny baby steps commander, one at a time.
