I might join up with you.
Currently I have 4 star stuff with some 5 star stuff I'm crafting so that's kind of later in the game but it's always a little depressing looking at my 110 friends on my friend list and seeing none of them online ever. I'm usually the only online guild recruit too. I could maybe start another new knight but it takes awhile to grind to where I am now I don't know if I'd want to go through that again, but it sounds kind of fun. Maybe I'll be a gunslinger instead of a swords fighter.

I agree that the low population of the game is disappointing. The game benefits from social play, marketing, etc. But starting a new character doesn't solve that problem.
Just keep your current character, and put new items on her/him. It might help to adopt the attitude that the game is beatable with 4-star items, and 5-star items are "icing on the cake".
