Greetings, SK Forum.

My name is Mayoshark. You can call me Mayo.
Like everyone here, I believe we share a common purpose. This space exists for discussion. To exchange ideas, raise concerns, acknowledge progress, and voice criticism when it is warranted. Some of us disagree with the current direction of this IP. Others are appreciative of it. Both perspectives are valid, and both deserve to be heard. That dialogue is why this forum exists.

I will be honest. I have tried not to care.
From my perspective, video games are products. They are created by passionate people operating within the constraints of a company. Working in the creative industry myself has made it difficult to view games purely as escapism. Once you understand how they are built, much of the illusion disappears.

That said, this is not the full picture.
For many people, games remain a place to relax, to connect, and to feel something meaningful. For me, this particular game played a larger role than I would like to admit. Without it, I would not be the artist I am today. I would not be working in this industry. I would not have met people who genuinely mattered to me and later became close friends. Lorame, Streetdragon, Kavsta, Mangochick. Exceptional people.
Because of that, I cannot honestly dismiss this game as just another title I once played. It deserves a degree of respect. And with that respect comes the responsibility, or at least the desire, to offer thoughtful feedback in the hope that it contributes to something better.

Which brings me to the present.
It is genuinely encouraging to see GH taking steps to improve the game. Quality of life updates, new boxes, and especially the inclusion of community contributed level designs are all positive developments. Allowing the community to participate directly in the product is one of the clearest ways to show that their voices matter. That decision was both smart and appreciated.

I want to be clear about one thing. This game has potential. Many people have said this before, and I agree.
Despite the lack of substantial content such as missions or consistent meaningful updates, the foundation of the game remains strong. The art direction in particular gives it long-term viability. It is simple, effective, and instantly recognizable. Cherub did an excellent job bringing this world to life, and the overall aesthetic aligns well with current trends in the gaming space.

Where I believe the game falls short is marketing.
I understand the hesitation. This is a title from the early 2010s, and from a practical standpoint, additional promotion may not appear necessary. However, there are strong examples that suggest otherwise. Games like RuneScape and the Guild Wars series are also old, yet they continue to receive updates, maintain active communities, and attract new players. Even modest, well-placed marketing efforts can make a meaningful difference.

This leads directly to the community.
What I find particularly noteworthy is how strong and cohesive this community has remained despite long periods of limited updates. At first glance, this is surprising. It could be nostalgia. It could be long-standing friendships formed through the game or its guild systems. It could simply be habit. More likely, it is genuine affection for the game itself.

Over time, this becomes clear. This is a niche but healthy community. Spaces such as Kozma Backpack and Arcade are strong examples. They are consistently active and well managed. The moderators and administrators behind them do an exceptional job maintaining these spaces, often without compensation. That level of dedication is rare and should not be overlooked.

I hesitate to sound overly corporate, but a community like this is an asset.
Within it are talented artists, both 2D and 3D, as well as game developers. I am certain GH is already aware of this, and I am glad to see steps being taken to allow community members to contribute, even if it currently begins with level design. However, many of these individuals are capable of far more, given the opportunity.

There are artists who have supported this game for years. I myself may be new to the community, I drew some silly fanarts once in a while largely because of my friend Streetdragon’s love for the game. For me, that was occasional and moreso a recent thing. BUT For others, it has been consistent and ongoing for a very long time.

Giving these creators a chance to collaborate, or even opening a clear path for engagement, matters. Something as simple as reaching out and saying, “We like what you made. Would you be interested in seeing this idea in the game?” can go a long way.

This type of interaction benefits everyone involved. It strengthens trust, makes creators feel valued, and fosters long-term goodwill. There are successful examples of this approach across the industry. Arrowhead has incorporated community inspired enemy designs ( they came from reddit from all places ) Warframe has featured fan-made posters directly in game spaces. These efforts are well received because they are genuine. When done right, both sides benefit.

In the long run, this kind of relationship between developer and community is not just healthy. It is sustainable.
im excited to see what GH is cooking or planning with this, so best of luck to you guys

There's a lot of effort to be made by both the community and GH.

For as much as I agree that Grey Havens should try to let the community be more involved overall, I find some of the things you yourself propose a bit unrealistic because of the current state of the game and GH staff.

The recent Slime Casino update has shown that the current developers of this game don't seem to fully understand what the community wants and what the game needs, nor they seem to have the time, resources and/or interest to increase communication between the community and their developers/decision makers to make less controversial changes.

Regarding marketing: It is extremely difficult to sell (not in the literal sense, this is a free to play tittle of course) a game that's riddled with problems in practically all points of its journey. Early game is slow and unengaging, mid game is filled with repetition and extremely slow progression and the end-game is extremely unbalanced and filled with even more repetition that is only broken with the occasional event.
As a veteran player with over 2600 hours played, I can't recommend this game in good faith to nearly anyone because of how much it fails to respect your time and money. Every time I think of finding a way to show this game to people, I keep asking myself: why should they spend their time with it when there's plenty of other games that will deliver an overall better experience in nearly all aspects? In such a heavily saturated market, you need to shine very brightly to have a chance.

Regarding community interaction: The current state of the relationship between Grey Havens and the Spiral Knights community has been quite toxic for a while and I don't see this allows for a healthier relationship to grow without a lot of time and resources being put into that alone. Grey Havens has been considered to be practically a brick wall in most situations, and every time problems are addressed are due to backlash, and usually these communication attempts don't do much more than make the community angrier due the issue not being addressed correctly (once again, you just have to look at how the Slime Casino update was received and handled).
This in turn makes the community more hostile towards the developers of the game and, to put it lightly, there's plenty of people tired of their antics.
These factors all make it harder for communication to be done in good faith without either party getting a negative outcome (like the community just not being heard due to bad actors being louder or Grey Havens staff getting harassed after opening up).

There's so many holes in here that need to be patched up I personally just see it very hard for things to go the right way without having to increase costs in Grey Havens part or having to wait for many years, which the game itself might not be able to handle. It is not exactly impossible, but because of current circumstances, I just don't see some of your proposals happening until certain things change internally both in Grey Havens' part and within the game itself.

Grey Havens can't hear you from their dollar store yacht.

There is something special about SK's art style that no amount of community fanart can replicate. It's not even close either, and probably best if it stays strictly separate. If you think the community art is good though, you could try making your own game.

Agree

Sharkumayo is not wrong, Leidran has a point.

It will take time and effort to brigde the Distance but it can be done. We can 'say' We care for the Game, all we want, and will, but those are Words, We need to Act, on the community is stop being complacent about Bugs and unbalance things, because "tHe mEtA rUlEs eVrYtInG" and it doesn't mater if is outside the meta...and be sensible, CLEAR, informative and Kind reporting them, ALSO and very important, eschew ourself from the unconstructive "use something else, that's not going to be fixed, Play this other thing instead".
Non-Complacient, Constructive and Clear.

On the Devs side is far more complicated. Requires clarity and consistency in Comunication, complicated because sometimes Nothing 'interesting' is being worked on, althought as important as it might be, not entertaining, other times things that cannot be done (engine limitations, resource comsumption, creative direction switch) can be started and left un-complete for ages... and that will cause uncertainty and discomfort in the community to a disruptive extent. However, RADIO SILENCE is NOT an option, let me be clar about it, NOT, and I can't stress this enough, NOT an option.
On the words about possible Nerf that were spoken sometime ago, Don't be afraid of Doing it, if is needed because is not healthy for the game, The Outrage and Outcry, will be quenched and in perpective will be meaningless and minuscule (sure, loud and Whinny, and non constructive due to complacency, but empty) compared to how much of teh game will be tested and new interactions will be found and buggs to fix, and the game will grow.

Actions not Words. Yes, mistakes will be made, corrections are possible. Yes, miss-understanding will happen, comunication will be required. A Community will be the 1º result of that, a good game the 2º.

Comparisons can be anoying but, sometimes nessesary. Warframe works, is different but not so much, is big, but was Build by a Community, Devs and Players toghether, with Respect, Kindness, Consistency and Care.
And on the Asseting the Asset a community is, DE is one of the Company that has proffited a LOT from: "Respect, Kindness, Consistency and Care". Why? because They MEAN "Respect, Kindness, Consistency and Care"... Larian is another example.
