Events being skipped, Seasonal boxes not being scheduled aside, There is a much bigger issue regarding the lack of communication
or no communication from Grey Havens. It seems like the game masters are severly detached from the reality of the game, As of today April 1st we have received a supply depot of bolted vee's. Now as much as this could be seen as funny it leaves a very sour taste. I think there is a need for some pushback from the community rather than just needelsy complaining action needs to be taken whether that be a strike from the game something needs to happen to show that we are serious that this is not ok.
Lack of communication
Its completely asinine that a company that survives off of boxes and promos would skip some of the most looked forward to boxes and promos to simply "garner interest for the next box"
The way that Grey havens communicates with this community is backwards and results in nothing but frustrations. Breaking 12 year box/promo/event traditions to "spice things up", and instead dropping the most poor taste supply depot listing is peak grey havens. Yes, dont list anything for a month, but oh ahahha list some useless shitty bolted vees on april fools, gotcha!
Oh guys, btw by the end of march in 2025 we had gotten 156 supply depot listings. Wanna guess how many weve seen in 2026?
Take a wild guess
is it half?
is it a quarter?
is it even a sixth?
Nope. weve had 1/8th the supply depot listings this year compared to last year
While also missing march of the tortodrones, lucky boxes, AND equinox boxes
Hey Grey Havens,
I'm still very thankful you decided to work on Spiral Knights again. I have to say what you provided so far was great.
Though, I think you very much need to work on communication, as of now, we can only speculate on what's happening next and often times, this builds long-lasting frustration as you've probably seen in this numerous e-mails that have been sent to your team recently.
From a customer standpoint, I have to say that it's very triggering to have you saying that you're back working on the game and being left out in the dark for extended periods of time.
It would be great to have clues about what the team plans for the game and have actual responses to suggestions and matters brought to you by the community instead of: "I'll pass on your feedback to the team" and hearing barely anything back. I'm not saying you don't considerate suggestions because clearly you have shown that you do, but I wish there would be an actual public follow-up with explainations so we can better understand what your team is thinking and provide community feedback.
I strongly think that the dev team and community need to work hand in hand to provide the most relevant content.
Thanks for reading this.
Communication between the players and Grey Havens is better than it has been in a long time since the activity starting last year in 2025 and I'm very thankful for that. That being said it's definitely not the best and could certainly be better than it currently is right now. Pushing for a clear community manager and more dialogue is something that we the players should keep pushing. Proper dialogue to a broader audience over whenever one dev or owner is just in a chatty mood with a few people.
Equinox Box being 14 days later than the true Equinox was odd and unexpected for sure but it was released none the less.
April Fools was good I think, the funny dialogue was turned on this time and they threw a bolted vee reference into the depot which is better than nothing. Shows that they have some interest in the small things which adds character.
It is super easy to get dragged into a negative pessimistic attitude in the SK space, the past few slow years have made it the norm and I'm certainly guilty of throwing that negativity around in voice chats and at Grey Havens themselves even recently to which I realized it was a habit I developed over the years that isn't something I want to continue doing. So I get it believe me but I suggest entering a healthier headspace over making yourself unhappy focusing on the bads. Focus on all the positive movement the game has had and keep the momentum going to encourage even more good things in the future.
I recognize that the last few years have been very frustrating and, despite having been back working on SK for over a year now, we have not done a great job of reflecting that in our communications. I'm sorry about that. Bear in mind we're a small crew and we have not had anyone dedicated to community comms for a long time.
Much of our reluctance to communicate a roadmap boils down to internal uncertainty about how long things take, what we could do, when, and so on. For example the Java update we recently shipped has been in the works for over a year. We had hoped it would take ~3 months when we started. This is not untypical of game development, generally, but if we'd announced it a year ago it would have been frustrating for everyone. We also like to surprise people with new stuff :) I acknowledge that this may not be everyone's preference.
Regarding boxes we are trying to mix things up a bit -- for example we hoped the exciting new stuff would mean that folks didn't 'need' an Equinox box -- but when it became clear that the players wanted the Equinox box, anyway, we switched it on. We learned something from this and will continue to try to respond when requests like this are made. That said, some old things will have to make way for the new.
We have a new process for highlighting these issues, both Clotho and I will be around on the forums and other venues (like the Steam forums) more often.
Thanks for your patience.
Hi Cleaver,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to what we have to say in the forums and I definitely understand the reluctance to offer a roadmap or make any other commitment regarding deadlines given the uncertainty of working with a small team on an old and outdated system. I'm personally very familiar with "I should be done in a couple of days" turning into weeks after encountering unexpected issues so the fear of overpromising and not bring able to deliver on time is definitely reasonable.
If I may make a suggestion to rectify this though - instead of giving a roadmap with hard deadlines how about making annoucements or posts that are less binding? Tell us about your general plans for the short and long term (e.g., we are currently working on improving the backend to make it easier to develop XYZ / we hope to look into the gear meta in the future and adjust over and underperforming weapons). Obviosuly you could add a full disclosure that these are just plans and drafts that are subject to change or could take longer than expected.
Another good option is to tell us what you were up to rather than what you plan on doing. Something like a monthly or semiregular post where you briefly go over stuff that you were working on or any unexpected set backs you encountered will help keep the community in the loop and give them both the communication we need and a feeling that progress is being made. Imagine if you download something and instead of showing you the progress bar go from 0 to 10% and so on it would be stuck at 0 for half a day and then jump to 100% when its done. Not seeing progress being made just causes people to panic and wonder if something is stuck or bugged out even if it is working perfectly fine in the background so just giving us a life sign here and there to let us know that everything is ok (or not) would be much appreciated. Obviously, you don't have to disclose everything and can still keep a few surprises secret. In fact, I would argue it would even make it better when all of the sudden we get a secret update that wasn't mentioned before.
Hope my suggestions help and thank you for reading this block of text if you took the time and got this far.
Hi Cleaver,
Thank you for taking the time to response and give us some clue of the dev team though and ideas!
I agree with Hells-Wolf, giving us some insight on your strategy (main orientation and direction of the work in the background) without diving into the details and road maps with deadline, would be great to keep our interest and the hype going.
Regarding the boxes, I would assume it's very hard to keep the balance of monetisation of the game, between new boxes, old ones and item rarity. For the specific case of the equinox boxes, their main "issue" is that those are one of the only two ways (with featured auction) to access the best weapon in the game, the orbit gun (resp mixmaster).
I get that it is super usefull having those super rare item as a way to control the liquidity volume in CR in the game economy (and thus the relative value of boxes and energy purchase). But doing that with costume, props and reskin seems more fair to me: those impact less the gameplay. It would be nice to find a way to keep those weapon (the orbit gun and the mixmaster) as super endgames items, but still accessible to every one (via a super hard craft recipe needing bunch of SL materials + materials that you buy from farming the bosses, maybe a specific recipe you unlock with reaching a certain amount of prestige?)
Just some though,
And many thanks for keeping this amazing game alive!
You have my partial support through these tough times, Whattareu. We'll get through it
