Hi all. Another one of the returning players. Kind of. I played on and off for a long time. I wanted to ask the developers a pretty important question of "What can we do?" I'm asking because a lot of people are holding hope for the game. We have hope that the game will be improved and that the devs will add more content. But what else can we do but buy energy and prize boxes to support this development?

The community here loves the game. But it is no secret that running a F2P game in the current era is very very hard without heavy monetization or subscriptions. The developers need money to live and to work on this game. Stop me here if this game is simply in a "Maintenance" mode because I want to talk realistically.

I get why we have prize boxes and why rates are low. I get why 50 Radiants cost 700 energy (even though nobody probably buys them). And I definitely get why there really aren't any sales on energy or deals on OCH.

It's to get money. Grey Havens needs money because running the game costs money. Time needs to be spent working on the game - and time is money.

Money money money I feel like is what GH lacks a surplus of to make sure development doesn't take longer than it should. A small dev team with a lot of weight on their shoulders is something that makes people slightly anxious but optimistic on both sides. Nobody wants devs to HAVE to tiptoe around their community because what they do could actually make or break their paychecks. So again...

What can we do?
Fundraisers? AdventureQuest Worlds just got over 2 million dollars for doing a Kickstarter to move their entire game to a different game engine.
Subscription services?
Paid content? But how to make brand new content that people are willing to pay for when so much work has to be done?

I'm just spitballing. And you should too if you're reading this.

TL;DR What can the community do to help devs help Spiral Knights? Feel free to add any ideas!

Publicity helps

An obvious idea is just to advertise the game and talk about it. Mention it on social media and recommend it to people. More players = more money.

Yes however

I dunno how the community would advertise nowadays without someone with a large amount of followers. Usually the game developers would have to pay for advertising but I'm sure theres players who are more than happy to try to advertise it via streaming or like you said, social media. I don't know a very famous person that plays this game though like 1 million+ subscribers type of famous haha

Official YT channel?

Doesn't SK have an official YT channel? Just post a 'We're so back' form of a video. It's ought to put a positive spark throughout the internet and potentially lead to a domino effect where we'll end with a chunk of new players.

I feel like they aren't too confident in the state of the game right now and how much they can output to us. As much as I always love seeing newer players and returning players, I feel like some kind of communication needs to happen to the community that's already here before a large announcement like that

And for them to be confident in putting content out, they have to commit resources and money to making that content in the first place. It'd be cool if they just released new stuff using old assets but still being creative about it

Old could be new

You'd most likely run into the same issue trying to release old assets as new. It'd have to most likely be updated to function with modern SK. Keep in mind that a lot of canned content comes from around game's release. It could be as simple as tweaking just a few things, but it could also be something that'd take a lot of time.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the cut content released, but I'd rather have the game functional. It tends to get into a state where it nigh bricks my pc under very specific circumstances (already reported that as an issue through the in-game bug report system).

True!

Getting all of that stuff out would be great. I truly am just wondering what we can do to help. "Help us help you" kind of thing

Too early

It's too early.

I'm personally hopeful for the future of the game (it could also be nostalgia taking over), but at this point all we can do is wait. GH needs to pick up from where they left off and not lose the steam in those early rejuvenation days.

Once there's some kind of momentum, just do what you'd do - share the excitement around.

More content around it

I think there needs to be more content around sk, wether its youtube, tiktok, instagram and so on. So Perhaps people should consider posting a few things here and there to boost some interactivity outside of the community? I am not youtuber/content creator myself but perhaps a good thing would be to think of ideas where you can interact with the community and create small events that the devs aren't a part of?

Perhaps the devs could think of a battle pass? Create events around the battle pass much like other free games do?

But the game really needs new content and events to happen more frequently imo for all of this to catch any new interest. So, a fundraiser imo wouldn't be a bad idea if thats what they need. Then if they can come up with some major new content from a fundraiser, we the community could really put effort into making our own content out of that and posting it online.

What is to be done?

Hey, thanks for offering to help! Much appreciated.

Leafblader hits on my main ask, which would be to tell your friends who used to play SK that the game is getting some love and that they should check it out sometime. Post about it, if you like, but proper word of mouth is our number one goal.

We don't need to make more money from the folks already playing the game (thank your again for your patience and support), we need have a lot more people playing.

That said, we need to fix things up (nearly there with the hardcore tech stuff, game balance has a ways to go) and add more content (early days but we are cooking up ideas). If we do these things well then, I hope, word of mouth will follow naturally. I think it's totally reasonable for people to wait a bit and see what they think of what we ship.

We will be making a 'we're back' video, soon, though we do need help: if anyone is a skilled video editor / knows one who loves SK, please send me email daniel at greyhavens dot co (time to retire the SEGA logo from our Steam page!)

A little bit of communication goes a long way

@Cleaver I just want to take a moment and appreciate the tidbits you've written across forums posts in the last few days. Just hearing that the team is looking into new content & balance changes (even if it's much later down the road) is very exciting.

I for one don't expect everything to happen instantly. I know Grey Havens is a small team and these things take time so I'm more than patient enough to wait.

that being said I still hold a gripe about Apocrea constantly being skipped but thats besides the point.

Long ago I had a relative pick up SK because he saw me play it a lot, and I had to urge him away from it because I didn't want to have to constantly keep making excuses for the game.

"Oh, sorry, I should've stopped you from upgrading to 5* and making your weapon weaker. You actually need to grind the final mission for 20-50 hours before you can upgrade."

"Oh your second sprite upgrade? Yeah that's a microtransaction."

"Dang, you picked Haunted Haze? That's been bugged since 2013. I hear development is picking back up again now though, so I bet we'll see it actually do damage in one or two years."

"No no no, don't pick that weapon or armor, see there's only, like, three viable options and your gear is a huge investment where you spend weeks on a singular piece of item."

"Where did I get this kat hat? That's uh... If you wait until mid-autumn this year you might have a sliver of a chance getting it if you no-life it."

I would love for Spiral Knights to be in a state where I could feel comfortable recommending it to people instead of warning them, and I wish Gray Havens the best of luck getting it there.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to not just me, but most of the community. I know it's hard to do so when half of them are believing that the games GH are over are just here to pull as much money from people as possible.

Me and my other Guild Masters/Officers try our best to retain the newer people who come in for the game and help as much as possible. I'm sure other guilds do as well, so we hope that is helping out too! Good luck in your work and please keep up the communications!!

Hopes and dreams don't sell a game.

I've had similar experiences like Zeddy's perspective on recommending the game to others. It's too premature a time to market the game. We have seen improvement in terms of stability, but nothing has visibly changed since Turbillion and such were added like over half a decade ago. Backend updates aren't noticeable to those who haven't played in years. They'll come back and not even know it happened. I fear that trying to get people to play now will just be met with most returning players saying "What were you trying to show me? There's nothing new here." before promptly quitting and being even less interested than before. As for new players, they'll run into that mountain of issues Zeddy mentioned and then some like the frustrating process of getting through 4* and 5* hall of heroes.

Before we can even consider marketing the comeback, a comeback has to actually happen. I'd love nothing more than to see this game succeed, but I don't want to harm its reputation further by having everyone blow their load too soon. Hopes and dreams don't sell a game.

I mean yes this game has always had that slow beginning. Not enough of a hook. It certainly was made for kids. To which most of the playerbase WAS a kid when the game came out. It now has to start with the fixes. After that, content will be made. There is certainly a conversation to be made of "who's the target audience now?" and making the beginning of the game better for everyone, those who are skilled in games and those who are not, is a good start.

T1 and T2 need more unique content and it needs to be more fun for newer players. Hopefully GH will get there.

To be clear I'm not trying to

To be clear I'm not trying to say what they've been doing is bad. Starting out with stability and backend was absolutely the best decision to make here. My post is moreso directed at the playerbase rather than the devs. I know we all want the best for the game but caution is necessary.

Yeah, I don't want the hope to be picked back up just to be slammed back down. Hopeful but not TOO hopeful is the common feeling of the community right now I am guessing

Word of mouth

Word of mouth can only go so far and that time to shake people up that "Spiral Knights is so baaack!" is not here yet but on we're certainly closing in. Unless we have some influencers with massive followings in our midst then that doesn't go far. If the money is good then some should go toward advertising and waking up the old players should be done when something truly tangible is added to the game like new missions, levels, or bosses otherwise they'll be disappointed and leave again. Spiral Knights is a master at recycling content, it shouldn't be out of the question to arrange some new levels using existing content and that could pass in the immediate future.

I always found it weird that none of the IPs of GH advertised each other which would have been free advertising more or less but those days have passed, at least with whirled but I think the player differences between Spiral Knights and Puzzle Pirates aren't compatible. I've never known someone who played both.

Balance isn't super important with most things on Spiral Knights, not as much as people make them out to be at least especially weapons and armor. Balancing gear is not going to bring back players which makes it mostly a nothing burger however balancing the things that make players leave could prove vital.

Ranking up:
The biggest hurdle for retaining players is somewhere in the 3 star and 4 star certification within the rank missions. Rank missions guide you through the game but around the time you need advanced and elite alchemy orbs the missions stop giving you everything you need and new players are left directionless with the conundrum where do I get more orbs? Making this more clear to players and potentially easier is key in retaining new players that Spiral Knights is seeking.

kinda sorta

I understand where you're coming from when you say balance isn't a super important issue, but I think it has more value than you realize. Some weapons in this game are either so incredibly boring, weak, redundant, niche, or a mix of these that they may as well not exist to most people. Buffing weak weapons, reworking boring ones, etc could practically be the same as adding a whole new weapon.

This specific example is a bit subjective but to me Turbillion may as well not exist. Its normals feel weak and despite me mostly playing arcade I still struggle to find scenarios where it performs decently. The charge genuinely does almost nothing. It's pathetically weak and incredibly boring. It's just another projectile fling. Damage and stagger power would help the normals but genuinely nothing would save that charge. But what if they made the charge completely different? What if it were like a mini vortex bomb you can fling a bit in front of you? That might be an interesting crowd control tool. I'd certainly remember its existence more, at the very least.

What about Fang of Vog? Imo, it's already a decent weapon but it falls short of its cousins in the brandishes while also trying to fit a similar niche and so I've almost NEVER seen anyone try to use it. Not to mention the crippling self damage from its charge attack. What if we made its damage better to make up for its lower speed than brandishes? What if the charge attack either justified its self damage with a damage buff or was just made less crippling? This one would be even less effort than the Turbillion example in that I think it really just needs some number changes and then suddenly the weapon becomes relevant!

On a somewhat tangential note, the only aspect of equipment balance that I think is genuinely a super daunting task here is armor. That's a beast that needs either a complete rework from the ground up or an incredible amount of effort to dramatically flesh out what's already there. Even if we nerf Chaos or Black Kat, what are we left with? A bunch of armors that provide pretty minor bonuses in the grand scheme of things. How much are you really going to benefit from Gun-Only ASI Low from your hat? What about Gremlin-Only DB Medium? If you're lucky you might find a new set to replace chaos that has some okay bonuses but in my opinion all the bonuses we have here are incredibly boring barring CTR, not to mention the very limited pool of them we can select from. THIS is the kind of change that I think is best reserved for later when the time and funds are there.

The video is good idea but...

Hey dev, if you wanna make a video with a "we are back" kinda thing i think it would be better if there is real new content to back it up, otherwise people will see that not much changed over the years and go away

I'm sure they don't mean right now right now

They did mention removing the Sega logo. And they're probably slowly building the team
