Ever since yesterday, I can no longer login into the game. The process fails at the little update window that gets launched first before the actual game opens up.

I am playing via the standalone client from the website with my windows 10 PC.

When I double click the executeable, following happens:
- a little window with the title ,,Spiral Knights" pops up
- a bar gets stuck at 28% or 39% when saying ,,Verifizieren der Daten"
- after some time passed of this stage being stuck, it says "Timeout beim Verifizieren der Resourcen.", and I am forced to close the window since nothing happens anymore.

Note that I was playing after the ,,Forge Ahead" update just fine; and also at the day before the 2026/5/11 update.

Edit:
Just now when I launched the game another time to give proper feedback, it suddenly started normally after being unable to do so for over a day...

Well, this is strange, but I will still post this threat, since something clearly was not working properly before, for future reference.

Okay, once again, the launcher gives trouble and refuses to do its job when I tried to login just now.

The launcher window says ,,Validiere Download ..." while being stuck at 22% for some time,
then it once again goes "Timeout beim Verifizieren der Resourcen." and nothing happens anymore.

Whatever has been done in that 2026/5/11-update (or potentially the Forge-Ahead-update) is messing up with updating the game when something new gets added and the game needs to be actualized.

Long story short:
Once again I can not even launch the game!

This already happened before

You'd be surprised to know that this issue is actually nothing new.
In my post here (https://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/125121) I had a very similar experience to your first one where the launcher would get stuck at a certain percentage for too long going over the time limit put on by GH and just like your first experience, by simply insisting hopelessly I eventually managed to get in.
From what I understood from the logs, this has nothing to do with us but it's entirely on grey heavens and their network settings.
I'm unsure if it's because our machines are taking a longer time than what grey heavens expected due to them simply being old, as my internet connection should be definitely fast enough (and probably yours too).
As pure copium you can try to open up the launcher from the .exe file itself and not by using shorcuts, and when the launcher fails you immediately try again like a mad man. Who knows maybe if you're fast enough the progress can kinda carry over.

I don't want to have to deal

I don't want to have to deal with this issue each single time when a new update rolls around!

So today there was another patch and today I ONCE AGAIN can not play because there is a fatal error within the update client that prevents it from updating clients properly.

And so far I had to keep restarting the client over and over again for the past half hour, because of this issue.
Since I am running out of patience, I accept the fact that I simply can not play SK today and have to retry getting into the game another day, while writing this post to update on this still ongoing unfixed issue.

Spiral Knights did not have these issues before that ,,perforcmance improvement" updates...
And obviously I am not the only one here!

Please fix the launcher already!

Dear Grey Havens

Dear Grey Havens,

Please allow me to play Spiral Knights again.

Your launcher after that Forge Ahead ,,update" sucks.

Thank you.

Please fix the updater already!

So today I had a bit of time on my hands and thought I just kept trying to get the game started while watching animes on another device, so that it wont interefere with the supposed game starting.

In detail, this means I did the following:
- Launching the Spiral Knights starter via shortcut on desktop.
- Moving the launched window slightly aside, so that another potentially started instance of the launcher would not completely overlap it.
- Already selecting the Shortcut again once (but not starting it yet)
- Watching anime until the launcher reached the point of ,,Timed out" yade yade yade
- Then I hit enter to have the next instance of the launcher started, because the first instance just became useless.
- I close the first useless and broken instance of the launcher...
- ...and start the same procedure again with step 1.

To my surprise, the launcher actually finally did its job around the middle of episode 12 of that anime I was watching.

That whole thing took a total of 49 minutes of launcher restarting whenever it timed out again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again.

Well, it is needless to say that I could watch multiple episodes of the duration of spam-starting the launcher like that.

It is also needless to say that THIS IS NOT A SITUATION THAT SHOULD APPLY FOR EACH SINGLE TIME WHEN THIS GAME NEEDS AN UPDATE !!!!!!

Well, for the record, I went ahead and stopped the time it took to finally get into the game.... this time.

But please Grey Havens... fix the launcher already!

Hmmm, not sure but maybe there's something with Java settings...

Just for the sake of completeness, I want to add that on my machine Java is updated to its current latest version (Version 8 Update 491 build 1.8.0_491-b10) and of course I still have this issue.
I doubt security settings have anything to do with this issue or anything really related to Java, but who knows. At this point our hope is for someone who's really smart about Java and internet protocols to play spiral knights and have our the same exact issue as we do. Maybe some java debug options may come in handy here, not sure.
I may return to this thread with the time it took to get in, but 49 minutes seems in line with the times it took me in the past.

issue still not fixed

When I wanted to play again today, once again this issue denies access to the game. Well, but not for long at least.

It took ,,only" around 20 minutes of constantly re-starting the updater until it finally got me into the game.

Note that this was my first SK launch in June. I noticed that along the patch there was also a maintance, which happened after my last session. Although I assume that a maintance is probably not affecting the launcher. But I still wanted to mention it.

Also, since I did not provide that yet, here are some more system details of my PC:
-OS: Windows 10 Home
-Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3,20GHz 3,20GHz
-RAM: 8GB
-Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750
-System: 64x

Hope that helps to finally fix these ridiculous long update time with constantly forced restarting of the launcher!!!

When I tried to login today again after just having played yesterday, there was another ,,updating" situation happening. Along with the updating issues that always follow such things.

What is weird though is the fact that there has been no new entry of any patches or updates in the announcement channel of this forum...
https://forums.spiralknights.com/en/forum/8

Furthermore, this time, it was a rather ,,short" time of spamming the launcher... it ,,only" took about 13-15 minutes spamming the launcher whenever it timed out to get into the game again.

Therefore I am not completely sure what this was about today...
Was it such a small update that it has not even made it into the announcement channel?
Was the launcher improved to take less ridiculously long time?
Is launcher bugging out even more and updating things now multiple times that had already been actually updated?

Whatever happened today, it was an anomaly.

Game Master
Sorry you've been running into this!

The game has received several updates to how Java works under the hood, including bundling its own runtime in the installation files. If you haven't done a clean reinstall since those changes, it's worth trying:

  • Uninstall the game and any separate Java installation
  • Manually delete any remaining files in the SK folder
  • Download the fresh installer from https://www.spiralknights.com/

On Steam, uninstall, clear Steam downloaded cache, manually delete remaining files and reinstall.

If you're still having trouble after that, please email us at support@spiralknights.com. Include your IGN, your operating system and processor, and a copy of your launcher and projectx log - you can find those in your SK installation folder.

2 things to mention

Hello Clotho,

I want to give you a reply and also want to update this threat with a new finding.

(1)
As I mentioned in my Opening Post, I am playing Spiral Knights via the Standalone client. I have been for many years.
Some time ago there was an update that significantly changed things and the launcher actually wanted me to reinstall the game. And did not allow to launch. (I recall it was some sort of engine or version change.)

Since I know that new stuff generally does not instantly work properly, I actually waited a bit before completely uninstalling, downloading the new installer, and reinstalling Spiral Knights.

Or to say it with fewer words:
I actually did that complete reinstall at the 13th March 2026.

As mentioned in the opening post, the mentioned issue only started appearing afterwards after the ,,Forge Ahead" update. Or to be specific at the next time when the game needed to update after the ,,Forge Ahead" update.

I will try reinstalling again, if the issue persists though.

(2)
Now, with another recent update (which I did before reading Clotho's reply), I thought of following:
- constantly restarting the launcher makes things work
- so maybe things are *actually* happening in the background despite the launcher claims that it timed out and seemingly nothing happens.

I did the following:
- After the initial launcher (once again) reached that infamous ,,timed out yada yada", I launched another instance of the launcher.
- Then I did close the initial launcher, which was timed out.
- As expected, after a short time, that launcher once again reached that ,,Timed out" state.
- Now, instead of launching the next instance, I just left the launcher with its ,,omg, I am so time out" as it was and left it like this for 60 minutes to test if it actually finishes whatever in the background despite what it said on the interface.
- For good messure I also launched a task manager to spectate the Spiral Knights process. Because why not and because this is an observation test anyways.

The result:
- I observed that Spiral Knights did at one point drop from a Working Space usage of around 150k to around 130k working space usage.
- After 60 minutes, I closed that forever-timed-out launcher
- and then launched another launcher once again.
- This new launcher was instantly able to actually start the game.

Now.. this was only one single instance, but it makes me strongly assume, that this whole issue is actually primarily an interface bug while most stuff do actually work in the background.

What does not work is actually launching the game after whatever mr-forever-timed-out did has been finished, since it does believe itself that it is timed out.

Furthermore, I suspect that the moment, when the Working Space of Spiral Knights dropped from 150k to 130k was the moment when the actual updating has been actually finished.

.
.
Ultimately, I wondering if I should just keep things as-is for now to make another test and report my findings or if I should reinstall again.
Unless I am told otherwise, I believe that reporting and confirming my new assumption has worth in it for future reference.

News from me

Following the read of Jenovasforumchar latest post, I tried to replicate what he did in step 2 with the only difference that I waited something like half an hour.
The results are exactly the same as his: after closing the instance of the launcher that timed out and opening a new one, the game lauched instantaneously without issue.
Here's some funny timing data that I took while I waited:

  • Time required for the timeout message to appear since the laucher started: 3 mins 49.59 seconds
  • Time elapsed until I closed the timed out instance: 27 mins 18.02 seconds

I therefore am in strong belief that this issue is purely presentational and actually does not affect any underlying mechanisms for the updates themselves. In conclusion, this is simply a misunderstanding caused by the "error" message as under the hood the client does execute properly and a minor inconvenience because a user needs to re-open the client twice in order to play the game.
It's very likely that the time needed to update the game itself is much less than 30 minutes, I suspect that waiting 10 mins (and even then I feel that's a gross exaggeration) is more than enough time the let the game update without any problems.
Thus I propose that we turn this thread into a competition to discover what is the minimum time needed for the game to update without problems.

@Osmosi

Nice data with the stopping and stuff. I myself just went for 60 minutes, since I just wanted to see if it actually works in one go. In a previous ,,update", it took around 40 mins of constant reopening after all. So I just rounded it to an hour to definitely be above that expected updating time.

Although I want to correct you on 2 points:

1. It is more than a minor inconvenience.
I would myself consider it a minor inconvenience, if the launcher would actually start the game after it was done updating.
But the thing is, we do not see when it is ready and if it needs more time.

This means either waiting an extended period of time or checking frequently. For example each 10 mins while playing with your thumbs.

2. The updating length will vary.
Now, we could figure out the exact time for the ,,next" update that happens, but depending how big the update is and how strong your internet is, the actual update time WILL vary.

This said, I still have hopes to figure something out with the taskmanager. After all I am under the assumption that datas did in fact change after the launcher silently finished its stuff.

But I will probably reinstall the game again-again after messing around with the taskmanager next update.
Although I have not very much hope that it will actually solve it, given that I actually did a complete reinstall a couple monthes ago. But it will be worth a shot nonetheless.
