If we wanna be as gentle and kind as possible towards the people who designed this event, this is at the very least the Worst Event of all, and a big pile of Trash Game Design. I will analyze my thoughts below.

This is the only event in the game where you can't get all the items by playing it like a normal average regular human, which is opening the Prestige Tab and starting the event mission. The items available to buy with the event tokens are:
- Kat claw hood (3*)
- Kat hiss hood (3*)
- Kat eye hood (3*)
- Black kat hood (3*)
- Kat tribe fetish (material)

The first three helms can be upgraded all the way to 5 star with the Fetish material.

BUT(Here is the fun part)

To get the matching armors you will need another material, the Wicked Whisker, and not only 1 copy of it. You will need one for the 3*, two for the 4* and three for the 5*. That's six (6) whiskers per armor. That's 24 whiskers for the four armor sets.

But wait there's more.

You will need one more whisker to get the Black Kat hood to 4*.
That's a total of TWENTY FIVE (25) WICKED WHISKERS to get all the sets of the event.

But wait, there's more.

Why doesn't the Black Kat helm go to 5* you ask? And how do you get this Whisker material you ask?

OH BOY!!! HERE'S THE SUPER FUN PART OF THE EVENT!!!

Some genius thought it would be a good idea to have every Black Kat (1/90 spawn chance) have a 1/250 chance to drop a Material called Book of Dark Rituals. Then have people use that material to spawn a secret boss, and the boss drops ONE (1) Wicked Whisker for each party member and one Black Kat Cowl (5*) helm for the book user.

Of course, given the insane rarity of the item, people either sell it for unreal amounts of money, or sell the 3 remaining party slots to those wanting to fight the boss just for the whisker, again for unreal amounts of money.

So here are your options to get the rest of the items, that can't be acquired with Ancient Pages (the event tokens):
(1): Mindlessly run through a Candlestick Keep level over and over, trying to get Black Kat spawns in hopes of dropping a book.
(2): Farm unreal amounts of crowns to buy yourself a book and boss party slots for whiskers.

Both of (1) and (2) are equal to NOT PLAYING THE EVENT MISSION (OR THE EVENT AT ALL).

That's a load of bullshit. When NOT PLAYING the event is the actual gameplay of the event, you know something is terribly wrong with it.

I'm not even going to mention how absolutely useless the three Kat sets are, and that the arguably best end game gear (Black Kat set) is locked behind all of this garbage.

So, to end this train of rant, have fun Not-Playing the event and good luck on your Candlestick or FSC runs.

I am willing to pay someone money to invite me to these "Margel Slots" which aren't a tradeable in-game item and thus the trade of it cannot be enforced. It is labor and I'm happy to compensate you through any means which cannot benefit Gray Havens, so I will not pay you in any in-game currency or material.

You'll find me as zeddypanda on steam.

If you are a Gray Havens moderator or dev reading this, ask yourselves if this is the first time in a decade of black kat events that this has happened, or if perhaps the event is mechanically designed to be a slot machine for real-world payouts (that you don't get any share of).

Wild comparison

Kinda wild comparing farming to labor. In a game like SK anything other than playing the missions for the story or for the experience can be considered labor, since you are always grinding / farming for something. Otherwise you would just play the content once and quit the game forever.

But hey, at least this time, we got a new costume Shield. Props to the artist team, but it only goes well with the BK set (huge surprise!) and the oversized shield visual bug is still in the game (when shielding while moving). Thanks for the participation trophy, I'm perma using Ship Wheel anyway.

Farming is labor. That’s the structure of the entire player market, most transparently with the Crowns vs. CE relationship. Margrel and Shadow Lair slots are an anomaly where “paying for your slot” is a community fabrication players have no official support for, hence Zeddy’s satire.

Seeing all the content a game has to offer and quitting when you’re satisfied is the best and healthiest ending any game can give to its players, which is why games with microtransactions try to artificially extend their playtime as much as possible with quality as a lower priority. SK does this through multiple means, shamefully more aggressively over its lifetime, though the two adjustments GH has recently made with OCH and firecrystals are good steps above the abysmal track record they’ve had since 2013… and leaving all three of the event reruns alone, particularly Kataclysm as an infamously bad event, makes that seem like smoke and mirrors. Oh, but here’s more lootboxes!

Between the Raiments and the introduction of Whiskers with them, alongside changes to Black Kats’ drop conditions, this event got exponentially more hostile to players the very next run after a lot of OOO’s talent moved on in 2013, including its lead developer. Isn’t that interesting?

(Edited this down since I was getting off-focus and don’t want to derail…)

Agree mostly

The problem with this event isn't that it feels like labor. As you said the whole game is built around that. The main problem is that every other type of farming you do inside the game is still somewhat enjoyable and still feels like playing a game. Anything from JK farm to get your 4* gear, FSC speedruns, other events, even OCH still feel like you are playing a game either solo or with other players.

Running through a Candlestick just spawning the Kats and resetting over and over, going solo while one holds the party and rejoining to duplicate the BK spawns, or farming with 4 alt accounts is not normal or healthy gameplay. And even after doing all of that, every day for 2 weeks, and not getting a Book drop in the end is atrocious. Not only that, you don't gain anything other either in the form of crowns or whatever item. You get a bunch of WORTHLESS Ancient Page tokens.

That's why this event feels so bad.

Oh, and the fact that the actual drop rules are so opaque doesn't help either. I'm sure a lot of players - myself included - have been trying to get item drops in areas where they don't even happen. The whole event's a drawn-out joke at player expense...

@Nerf-Acheron
Fair takes and I concur; sounds like we were on the same (ancient, 13-year-old) page. I think that’s what made the first couple Kat events feel so much better, since their structure was more natural and cooperative. The non-BK hoods were still outclassed but could have had some mix set potential prior to Chaos’ buff, and we didn’t have to worry about “Margrel slots”, only being the guy to use the book, which was tradable… but even then it’s amazing an entire boss is stuck behind a single-use drop this rare.

@Vyre
Nerf-Acheron illustrated this well with the prestige mission being fundamentally pointless. Why make a mission guaranteeing Black Kat spawns if they don’t drop anything, and if the clear reward is minuscule with no bearing on the drop that actually matters? It’s slower than running alone (in the dark) without duping at all.

Amounts to a whole lot of wasted time and not a lot of fun for the trouble.

Worst event of all

I don't know which genius came up with this stupid event but I hope they got fired. This event is basically unpaid labor, but in a game with insane amounts of grind and on top of that, you don't even know if you will get the rewards. Everything that is involved with this event is stupid and needs a massive overhaul, be it the Whiskers for gear or the RNG rates, like wtf? Years and years of complaints about this event from many people and no changes to this day but instead what they did is increase the drop rates from 1/200 to 1/250 if I'm right.

Also, there is not even a pity kind of system or tokens exchange for this event. Even Lost Ark, which has RNG gambling for every single thing in it has a pity system but nope, we don't need it here. Finally, wow, I really hope the guy who made this event got fired, that's all I got to say.

3-star helmet

The pity system is that you get the 3-star Black Kat helmet for 70 Ancient Pages, which are easy to collect in one or two Kataclysms. It's about as good as the 5-star helmet, given that these are glass-cannon armors anyway.

Yes, the Black Kat suits are much harder to get, and I agree with other posters that it the process could be easier and more transparent. But for many knights Chaos Cloak is as good or better (depending on other UVs). I often run with just one piece of Black Kat armor anyway. The suit is far from essential equipment. It mildly improves some knights' fighting in some situations.

(The fact that Orbitgun/Mixmaster is drastically harder to get than Black Kat, and actually enables a qualitatively different play style from other weapons, is a much bigger annoyance to me.)
