If the new announcement/update is true and taken at face value it seems to imply lockbox chances were, until this point, rigged unfairly towards certain knights for attributes such as account age or activity (and possibly others implied by 'etc.'). It feels strange to me that the announcement just glosses over that when its possible some players have been getting an unfair penalty towards getting boxes for attributes they didn't even know about.

It would be appreciated if we could atleast know the full extent of this, specifically what exact factors actually influenced box chances and by how much ,l(e.g do older accounts get 10% more boxes or something??). I know it doesn't mean much now since its supposedly fixed but it feels a bit insulting to just drop the fact some players have had unbalanced odds (maybe not significantly, but thats why I want to know the exact details and not the vagueness given in the announcement) for potentially over a decade of the games existence.

Its only fair, right??

Should be something along the lines of this

It used to be something like this:

You'd get 1 basically guaranteed box each month.
For every 7 metal lockboxes you'd increase the cap by 1 (this was permanent).

Having boxes in your inventory supposedly reduced the chances of you getting a box while you weren't capped.
Having silver keys supposedly did the opposite.

Older accounts that actively opened boxes were basically getting more of them per month which seemed like a fair system (you get rewarded for engaging with it).

There were probably other factors that I do not remember off the top of my head and someone much better informed on the topic will probably bring up (if not correct me).

Now the odds should be even and not impacted by anything.

One down the trash bin hatch ... more to go.

I hope that this is a small start of the removal of "Surprise Mechanics". But Spiral Knights has more of these ...

Though. Would be a good suggestion to address this better for the community of the game.
It might help avoid negative reactions.
As well as stating, which other "Surptise Mechanics" in the game that we have that will be removed for sure.
A reminder that it is all is made to improve the game and make it a little more enjoyable for the persistant community.
And it is all in the name of preservance of the special game to us all, Spiral Knights.

But even withought that. This is a great way to actually preserve thie game!!! ^_^

I would have another suggestion to look into that pesky Prize Wheel more ... as well as those treasure boxes that have a problem with distribution of Health Pods and consumables.
Making a box specifically for a consumable items and add the distribution station for the Health Pods (The one that we see in the starting missions) in the expences of Clockworks all around for the players to have a better way to aquire them (Or aquire them early in the trader shops). A special random room with a Health Pod would be a good addition to the Arcade.
Would be a good something to add to the Spiral Order expedition camps - a breakable boxes with only consumable items.

That's a great idea. (And the ideas leading up to it are also pretty good.)

This feels like a pretty big change! I admit that I agree a followup to explain how things used to be might be nice, but for my part that does feel a little like levying a pretty important step forwards; I mean, changes like this are on the table now. I know I've been wanting to see something like this happen. It's a move away from design patterns that might've been okay over a decade ago but leave a sour taste in the mouth now.

As new datagathering goes ahead and odds are discovered or disclosed, we'll probably be able to give more than an at-a-glance thumbs up, but for me personally? I like this change. It's a player-conscious and polite admission that it's time that a lot of things left untouched were fixed up. This is one of the decently big ones.
