Monster Spike Mandolin Feedback

-Tier 1 and Tier 2 difficulty should be turned down for "spiked" enemies they shred low level players.

-Stratum 4 needs options other than Roarmulus Twins for farming spikes

-The spike market is a complete mess, several exploits to generate infinite spikes via danger rooms, respawn pads, and totem resurrected enemies are being heavily abused.

-An ongoing issue is occurring where error messages occur, servers rubber band, and loading screens turn into infinite black screens.

-This event heavily encourages alt farming the way it is designed which contradicts changes to forge boxes to discourage alt farming.

-Broader Problem is the repetition issue, it defeats the purpose of grinding in Arcade if the player becomes forced to replay the same levels over and over again, same vibe as farming a rank mission over and over but more waiting and level skipping.

-The npcs Anomalie and Barbus mainly placed poorly in the middle of the road/hall obstructing walking while an open place is available to the right side of the Arcade. The npc by the fountain is also poorly placed obstructing the main walking path to auction house, would be much better if they were place in front of the fountain, by a cliff face, or didn't exist. Plugging a field sensor into the fountain is also concerning.

-Price, limited availability, resources required for Mandolins is good, keeps the value of "diskguns" as a whole more respected

-The npc Torch should be more common and knowledge of his existence should be shared by Anomalie or Barbus

-Polish updates in preview more before releasing them to the public

half-baked event

It would be absolutely INSANE if there was a preview server where players could playtest the event for issues like these and if GH actually read community feedback before abruptly rushing an unfinished event onto the main server.

must be my imagination

on a serious note; Spike scaling, Arcade availability, infinite spike generation and concerns about alt farming were all things players already brought up while playtesting the event. GH didn't listen and now here we are

In its current form-

In its current form its very messy right now, needed more time in testing for sure. Since the spike update is beyond preview now, it is worth bringing up here now with the issues that are present. Servers are the main frustration at the moment, something with this update really cooked the servers or something related to them in a bad way.

Even more insane if they actually enforced specific loadouts in different tiers of the Arcade to get a better perspective of how players at different power levels can deal with spiked monsters

Like, wow, I'm surprised, all the players on the test server running with triple UVs on all their 5 star armor and weapons had no problem with Tier 1 arcade? Must be balanced lol, just release it, no further testing needed

What's that? The fresh install in Proto gear is getting farmed by a Spiked Mecha knight gang and they just lost all their Sparks of Life? If only we had some way of predicting this

Technical issues need to be urgently fixed asap

I echo the sentiments regarding issues people have already brought up, like spike scaling, spikes spawning in inaccessible areas, the grind itself, etc

But right now Im shocked at how bad the rubberbands are and now with the infinite black loading screens the game is, without exaggeration, unplayable for me.

I hope to see an event extension to compensate for this. Such a bummer to see on a new event.

I guess...

Wasn't surprised that this event would be buns based on the player feedback and I knew GH wasn't going to listen to the majority of complaints. Attack speed and movement speed to certain enemies are so overtuned that even if one has lightning fast reflexes it wouldn't be quick enough due to the small delay input from shielding or moving around. You would need to be absolutely pixel perfect to block an attack something at you in a microsecond. The spike requirements are quite a lot given that a casual player wouldn't be able to get the 5* during this event, but at least it gives some incentive to play arcade more so that's a plus I guess. Other than that energy market very low atm which is fine for energy but sucks for crowns; also given spikes on AH are selling like hotcakes except with how predictable human nature can be, greed and profit will be the main priority.

(Hey though at least you can get fire crystals by trading with spikes instead of energy, that's great! :D)

I didn't take part in the test server since why would I if they're not going to listen, and I play other games if anything that have better dev support than here. The server issues I can say are due to people exploiting the danger rooms for infinite enemy respawns for higher spike drops and hopefully that gets fixed. While that should lead to an increase in spikes sold around, again, human nature. Same way as how the current ultra-wealthy are hoarding most of the world's wealth lol.

Also not surprised a few people already have the 5* gun and I told my Discord server that there's going to be maybe ten or more overall that would have it done and maxed out with very high UVs by the start of the weekend, and I was right. I saw one (not going to name them) say they did it while having a job but that's not the case. The spikes are tradeable and one can run alts in the game to make the grind much less, therefore they bought spikes in bulk without running the levels and/or used alts to get spikes faster. The people I seen have the 5* are either the regular merchants or vets that played the game for a while that have a ton of energy/crowns, or those that spend tons of money into the game. A casual player would probably not do any of that.

I don't see it as FOMO since there's no actual new content. What I mean by that is no new missions that continue the main story, no new boss(es) that we can face off, or no new arcade levels that are completely different from the ones we normally see. I'm already over it because it's been years since we had the last content update. The gun itself also reduces the skill gap much more since people are going to rely on it more compared to other weapons; same way with the mixer/orbitgun. Highly sought after because they're the 'easy mode' weapons. You can say brandishes are as well in terms of the charge, but that isn't consistent compared to regular shots from diskguns that cover an arc area. With the slicer line now there's one that can cover all enemies not weak to elemental damage, and has STUN chance. Pair that with anyone having a mixer/orbitgun and you literally have the other damage resistance types covered with CC (mandolin/mixer)/DOT (orbitgun) statuses and an offensive play from a distance without having to think much on defense because almost all enemies won't be able to reach you.

Anyway event had a bad rollout and game is unplayable for some due to server issues. Quick fix is restarting it but it's only temporary until GH can patch it. People see this as 'AH MAH GAHD NEW CONTENT THANKS GH YOU'RE THE BEST PLZ MARRY ME!'... when it's not new content. It's just adding a buff element to existing enemies that make them faster and stronger to make it seem like a souls-game where the approach failed hard. Also the new content is just a F2P gun that works similarly to the less than 1% obtainable ones. Nothing new aside from normal damage and stun. Also the event is limited so there's that too.

Tl;dr: Event released botched, servers potatomaxxing, no 'new' content, whales or people running alts already having the 5* two days after public release, my perspective that won't mean much of anything which is okay, that's it.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

things and stuff

I personally think that the high cost of the whole weapon line is actually a very good thing for the game. Ever since missions were introduced and mist energy was removed, there has been little reason to buy or sell anything found via actually Playing the Game™ beyond recipes. Spikes are the first time in a very long while where I've felt compelled to actually buy a farmable material from another player. The fact that I'm tempted to even buy the low tier spikes is a massive boon to newer players who finally have a way to make decent money by selling low tier spikes to veterans who can't be bothered to go smurf for a few hours in tier 1/2 depths. This aspect of the event's design is commendable.

Buuuut the alt farming absolutely threatens this. After the change made to forge prize boxes, I'm terrified the devs might try and make the spikes bound like they did those. I did see Cronus mention the intent of having people trade spikes which does assuage my fears a bit, but I still feel it's important to say PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T MAKE SPIKES BOUND. There are other ways to discourage bot farming. We could do things like require players to reach an elevator before getting their spikes. This would make people have to move all their alts one by one to the elevator hopefully making alt farming much more tedious than it's worth. Alternatively, at the expense of some moment to moment gameplay one could find a way to make players pick up their own spikes individually like how most loot works. I know it'd probably require some reworking to spikes as a whole and would be overall more detrimental to people who aren't alt farming but it's still a whole lot better than binding them.

I am... mixed on this event being a limited time thing. I think it entirely depends on how often this is actually run which we have no way of knowing until a precedent is set. On one hand it sucks knowing that if I don't farm as much as I can before the event ends I have no idea when I'll get a chance to farm the rest of the materials I need. On the other hand, it's probably a huge contributor to the value of the spikes. I think making this a timed event could work, but I imagine most people fear that if they don't speak against it now, then it'll be harder to convince devs to change this later if the precedent for how frequently it's run winds up poor.

Welp

Tbh as a tester, I was expecting this patch to cook a little bit longer on the test server, up to a week after the last patch(to polish things up).
Because during testing. I keep focusing on stats on the mob with the provided level from the arcade. But after playing around on live. I think some mobs still have their stats overtuned and lightning fast (surprisingly Jelly cubes, quick silvers). Danger-room mobs also scaled poorly.
Not to mention the exploit which being brought up during the test feedback. But here we are.

New Feedback

-Extend the event by a few days at least 4 and maybe longer if server issues aren't resolved.

-Seems like the quick fix for totem exploit is to make zombies not generate spikes however this made retrodes no longer spawn spikes which is effecting the event in a bad way, less spikes to grind based on rng.

-Elevators being purposefully changed for this event is nice, this should be the case with all cycling events like black kat, back to back candlestick keeps and status variants besides poison and shock like a fire candlestick keep at depth 19 would a nice and encourage grinding through arcade vs rank missions with less restarting.

-The speed, attack, and defense buffs that mobs drop no longer let you pick them up while you have a buff active which is bad, not sure this was an intentional change but definitely a bad change.

-screen shake toggle doesn't work or rather works to well if it is toggled off or on the screen no longer shakes.

-spikes tend to spawn inaccessible places like roofs, in blocks, behind scenery, behind one way gates, and behind locked gates

-npc's should mention the slicer, the current introduction is very unclear so solo players or returning players may have no clue what spikes are for aside from fire crystals. Unless you played the preview or are talking with players who know, you'd have no idea about the new recipes at basil.

-The npc torch seems to no longer spawn or is so obscenely rare he might as well not exist, I have farmed at least 6 hours specifically to find this slicer discount merchant and haven't encountered him aside from screenshots I've seen of him.

-also the radio silence while the servers were on fire with lots of returning players who are frustrated and confused with the new stuff and the broken stuff isn't ideal. Please give us an idea of what to expect or at least a "hey we hear you and we're working on it" otherwise it is up to our imaginations which tend to trend negative given the frustration.

This is actually a quirk of normal mode, it has always been this way.

ah good to know, didn't realize that was a thing

used to playing on elite but this event heavily incentivizes playing on normal and clearing enemies
