the loadout system is pretty convenient but it's also quite limited. now that y'all are doing various updates and QoL i think it's time to revisit it! there's a lot to talk about here so i'll break it up into sections.
quality of life improvements
- renaming option: you can't rename a loadout, the closest thing is to create a new loadout that's a duplicate of an existing one, then change loadouts and delete the old one! surely we don't need to jump through the hoops, just add an option to rename it directly (you can do it for your battle sprite...)
- manual sorting option: currently loadouts are automatically sorted alphabetically, and the only way to change the order is by numbering their names (especially annoying because there's no rename option!). it'd be nice to be able to manually click and drag them into a specific order.
- automatically carry over crafts: if you lose an armor in a loadout (usually because you crafted with it) the loadout just silently deletes itself with no communication! which badly screws over any new player trying to use loadouts, and discourages endgame players from incorporating their newly crafted items too. so, if you craft something new using an item in a loadout, automatically update the loadout to use the new item instead
- show errors for impossible loadouts: and if you lose a non-essential item like a weapon, then the item disappears from it, but the loadout remains and can't be properly equipped. (something similar happens for loadouts that use more trinket/weapon slots than you have.) i'd say to update it to remember and display the missing item, but show a visible error to communicate the issue
cosmetics
- add cosmetic loadouts: all loadouts always include all equipment and cosmetics right now. if you use one costume for all loadouts, then changing it in any way is hugely annoying because you have to update every single loadout you have manually! and that also strongly discourages not using the same costume for everything too. so add the option when creating a loadout to save only equipment, only costumes, or both; that would make it way more appealing to diversify your costumes and buy varied cosmetics
- integrate the style kit: what's up with the style kit? why in the world does changing your color/eyes/height cost crowns??????? get rid of the crown cost and allow changing them freely, and make loadouts save your style kit too. again that'd make it wayyy more appealing to diversify your costumes and change them regularly, cause typically your costume is designed around your personal color and changing between costumes made for different personal colors regularly during gameplay just isn't an option. (this also might make it more appealing to put personal colors and eyes in boxes more...)
bugfixes
- battle sprite display fix: currently highlighted loadouts display whatever harness and perk that battle sprite currently has equipped, not the harness and perk actually assigned to the loadout
- remove the collapse button: the loadout menu has a button to expand/collapse all categories. there are no categories. pressing it just removes all your loadouts. (unless you add cosmetic loadouts, and then shared/equipment/cosmetic loadouts would probably get their own collapsible categories and it would gain a purpose?)
the PvP button
why are PvP and PvE loadouts separate? there are no functional distinctions between a PvP and PvE loadout except that a PvE loadout becomes completely inaccessible when you're in a PvP queue, which is... weird? i don't really get the purpose of this, except for like organization for heavy PvP players (which can already be addressed by adding loadout sorting).
even if you don't remove the PvE tag feature... what's going on with the visual hierarchy? why is the PvP vs. PvE tag by far the most prominent part of the UI and the only thing you can do with one click? not even equipping the loadout can be done with one click, but changing its PvP tag can be!! that really makes no sense, it's easy to do by accident but it's very rare that you want to do it intentionally. (besides, there's already a "Mark PvP"/"Mark PvE" option that appears when you click it.) i'd replace the prominent button with something else.
suggestions for what to replace the PvP button with:
- a click-and-draggable button for the manual sort feature suggested above?
- a visual icon you can change? (maybe you can choose an inventory item to represent your loadout? or maybe it can just be from a small list of preset icons - e.g. the 6 monster families, sword/gun/bomb, and then a few generic icons like tree, castle, skull, shield, heart, boots)
- a button that instantly equips that loadout?
- ...or invert that, put the button on the right side instead, make it a settings icon that pulls up the current click menu, and make clicking the loadout anywhere else instantly equip it!
Back in the day, when you queued for lockdown, the system would automatically detect your tier level based on equipment and loadouts. If any equipment or loadout was 4* or above, you were automatically placed in T3 LD.
Marking loadouts that contained any T3 equipment as PvE prevents those loadouts from being equipped in LD, allowing you to play T2 or T1 LD without deleting your loadouts.
