Im playing spiral knights long time, and i have question how i can invite friend on steam to play Spiral Knights? (Yeah, know it's stupid question)
But i don't know how.

Enter a gate (dungeon, clockworks, w/e) while a steam friend is online who has not played the game before, it should pop up and give you the option to invite him and if he does and plays you should get a mini mist tank, which gives 15 energy, and the 5th friend you invite gets you a decorative hat.
I don't know all the specifics, but the above worked for me.
