Recordings....

I have been playing awhile now and when I first started I expected more videos of IG play (hadn't realized how new the game was at the time though). Now, several weeks later, there still isn't a lot of videos available. I don't admit to being an expert gamer by NO means, but have thought about putting up some basic tutorials and IG play.

So my questions are:
1) What FREE recording app should I use?
2) What are the best setting to get a viewable quality and best length:Mb size file?
3) What is a good FREE editing app? (want to blank out other peoples IGN, chat, etc. and since I would feel inclined to get their permission first and that seems like a pain. Also would like to edit length... basic editing features.)

Thanks in advance,
The Bane (IGN: Baines)

Well, I've seen many people

Well, I've seen many people use fraps to record game footage, don't know if it's free though.

I found the trial version of

I found the trial version of FRAPS, which is free, but it limits you to like a 30sec clip = /

I own a full copy of Fraps,

I own a full copy of Fraps, but let me list out some of the quirks...

Fraps is really easy to use and it uses very few system resources. However, when you record video, it records raw footage. What this means is that if you're playing the game in 1600 by 900 or 1280 by 720 (which are considered "high resolutions"), ten minutes of this raw video will take up 14 GB of hard disk space. Because of this, it writes to your HDD in huge chunks that will cause your game occasionally to skip during the write process unless you have a good multi-core CPU and a decently fast HDD. This also means that Fraps will not stream write to your HDD, meaning you cannot record one long video.

For example, I recorded one of my Vanaduke runs in 1600 by 900, which ended up being 23 minutes and 13 seconds, and in the end I had about 26 GB of raw video on my hard drive.

After you've gathered your raw footage, you obviously have to process it since it's in chunks. I use Virtualdubmod as a simple video editor, which allows me to piece together all the video chunks into the size that I want, and then encode it into something decent like H.264 @ 2500 kbps, which is suitable for YouTube HD.

I use fraps, its pretty good

I use fraps, its pretty good but you need a decent computer to handle it, Bandicam is also good, possibly better than fraps.

I've never heard of a free

I've never heard of a free recording app that lets you edit directly onto things (like the blacking out of peoples' names)...

Really the only free recording thing I can think of that might possibly work is CamStudio. And it isn't really great.

I spent a looong time trying to use free recording stuff, and eventually gave up and got Camtasia Studio 7, which is frickin perfect in like every way.

I have been messing with

I have been messing with CamStudio, but cant find the best setting for recording. I did try Windows Movie Maker on the CamStudios vid, but it doesn't have the block/black out (masking I wanted). Though I can capture the center region of the game screen at 640x320. I think I might need a better encoding codec though.

Google had a built in capture addon called Capture Fox, but I didn't get to mess with it much as I upgraded Mozilla Firefox and the addon doesn't work with the latest version of the browser. = (

Might have to see how much Camtasia Studio 7 is...

Anyone else know of any software for screen capture?

Thanks,
Baines

FastStone Capture, It isn't

FastStone Capture, It isn't free, but I could buy you a license. It has a record of being one of the lowest output file recorders ever. Google FastStone capture.

sucks to be a windows user;

sucks to be a windows user; Install a linux based OS, install FFMPEG(and unstripped avcodec), Install Openshot - your now setup to record and edit 1080P videos and it didnt cost you a cent.

John ~ Might have to try that

John ~ Might have to try that for the small fee they are asking for.

Thellion ~ Funny you mention this. I thought from the get-go, "Wish I could get SK to run on my Linux boxes!" I usually run linux (ubuntu), but play SK on a dual-boot system at the moment. Maybe I will get back to troubleshooting....

Best,
Baines
