I really want to get the Magnus line but I don't know which one to get. It seems that the Callahan is better because it has a high chance of stun in the charge and can still stun in the basic attack. Iron slug is the same, except that it goes a little farther, cn hit up to two times, and each bullet has a slight blast radius if it hits monsters directly. But it can also stun the user with the charge. That is why I think the Callahan is better. But is one drawback worth not having all the the other advantages?
Iron Slug or Callahan?
Thanks dude. I was thinking of getting the Callahan anyways. The knockback is good even though you can't move while firing. Shoudn't you fire most guns from a distance anyway? So the monsters can't get to you even if you can't move. Oh yeah, to answer you question, I think it means it knocks you back(dunno why they say squares though).
I tried one, they're not too bad at all, just a bit slow for my fast paced lifestyle.
The callahan is gread for many things that are vulnerable to piercing. Magnus is about the only line of guns that can be used well to shoot at dodging stuff like wolvers & devilites without making the fight unbearable for your swordies and having 3 out of 4 shots miss the target, too. Also, stunned devilites and greavers rock: "Time for revenge!".
Sadly, callahans knockdown gets ineffective somewhere around T3 basil - making a single target unable to move and easy to attack for your teammates is one of the best things about that gun, making it effective against gremlins too at times.
Anyone know if the iron slug has better knockdown? Mine's not quite finished yet...
Take everything the Wiki says with a grain of salt, the Iron Slug does not stun the user with it's charge, and from what my guildies are telling me the "blast radius" isn't really anything. If you want a normal damaging gun get Valiance, the knockback is great on that thing. The Magnus line charge attacks aren't ones that you would use during battle anyway so don't focus too hard on that.
If you want a normal damage weapon I recommend Blaster. The Magnus line culminates in a fantastic pierce weapon, or a mediocre normal weapon. I'd recommend the callahan.
Tried the slug now: As far as I can tell after one and a half runs, it's pretty much useless. Get Callahan! ;)
I would totally want to try out one of these guns if they would only make guns accessible to controller users. Seriously, how hard is it to implement a little line of semi-transparent dots in front of me, level with my feet, whenever I have a gun drawn while using my controller?
As far as I can tell the downsides to the magnus line are the same downsides as with the Autogun line, except that instead of being vulnerable while standing right next to the enemy you're vulnerable while standing at the opposite side of the entire room. And whereas a point blank charged attack from the autogun series weapons out-damages everything in the entire game, well.. I have no idea how much damage the magnus line does, but I'm sure it doesn't come close to the autoguns. Either way, you wouldn't use it against hordes of ranged-attack using enemies unless you have teammates distracting them, or against bosses. And we all know there are only like three specific weapons in the entire game you people are willing to fight bosses with anyways, so that's a moot point.
Hey guys, thanks again for all your helpfulness. I was planning to get the blaster line too, so thanks for asurring me that I should get it.
I've used my mega magnus, and I KNOW what to do with it. you never just fire twice and reload. You fire a single bullet, shield, fire, shield ,fire, rinse and repeat. This technique allows you to be able to dodge effectively against enemies and allows multiple shots without the long reload cooldown.
To give you an idea of range, damage and how to effectively put a Callahan to use, I took this action screenshot just within firing range of a Depth 20 Gremlin Darkfang Demo Bomber to keep it from blowing-up my cohort, TheBadger. The screen shot is taken along side a low wall so you can see the travel distance. I use the Callahan to stun and damage the more pesky bomber and mender gremlins and to weed out the bramble hiders. It's one of the top 3 level 10/5* guns I use the most of the several level 10/5* guns I own. I never use the charge attack, just normal fire. I only take it along if I know there will be lots of annoying gremlins and zombies. The gun I bring along the most is the Argent Peacemaker.
Wallet has been blanked out.
I've experienced opinion-based arguments before, but every type of handguns works in different ways, Including guns that works similarly in function.
Anyway, here's a little comparison between the two Magnus guns... (credit goes to Lechery for his advice)
= Callahan - The Piercing Sniper =
Pros:
+ Specialized Damage.
Gunslingers are more dependent on specialized weapons, as one can deal critical damage to 4 family types and be neutral to everything else when using two specialized weapons, compared to using one Normal and one Specialized, which one can deal critical to only 2 types.
+ Chance of Stuns.
All of the Magnus guns (except the Iron Slug) have a chance to deal Stun to your victims, which slows your victims down, allowing you to hit slowed enemies more accurately, or more time for you to charge.
+ Great vs. Beasts and Fiends.
Since it deals Piercing, it works well against Beasts and Fiends, which they're weak to.
+ Charge is almost a guaranteed stun.
+ Causes things to flinch and/or fall over.
True to its kind, the Magnus line (including Punch/Pummel guns) are known for its ability to flinch enemies in each shot.
Cons:
- Neutral vs. Gremlins and Undeads; Weak vs. Slimes and Constructs.
- Stun doesn't work reliably enough to matters.
Besides, even with higher chances of stunning enemies by its charge attacks, other stun weapons does the job better than Callahan. Want Stun? Go for Stagger Storm; it covers more AoE (Area of Effect) compared to Callahan... or you can have the Lumbers to do the job for you, if they're willing to cooperate, that is. XD
Also, Stun Vials does the same job, and they have great knockbacks on impact too.
- Flinches all turrets, but does minimal damage to Gun/Rocket Puppies and Polyps.
Like small enemies, turrets can be flinched, but since Callahan deals Piercing, don't expect to deal much damage to Gun/Rocket Pups and Polyps though.
- It's a "Niche" weapon.
By "Niche", it means that it only work well in certain situations. In Callahan's case, it only works well for disposing Beasts and Fiends.
- Low DPS (Damage per Second) vs. other weapons of same damage types, and other damage types.
Well, what can you expect much from the Magnus series anyway? Its attack speed is not even meant for damage, unless you have ASIs on it. Otherwise, it should be best used for defensive purposes anyway.
- Only shines vs. Fiends.
Beasts are the easiest family type to kill, to the point that you don't need Piercing to kill them anyway. XD
= Iron Slug - The Awesome-looking Hipster gun =
Pros:
+ Flat damage rate vs. all family types.
Unlike Callahan, Iron Slug does Normal damage instead, meaning that it deals neutral to all family types, but it helps out slightly in dealing with Constructs and Slimes. It loses its strength to Beasts and Fiends however, compared to Callahan.
+ Causes things to flinch and/or fall over.
+ Does the same job vs. Beasts and Fiends, but with a slight damage difference, compared to Callahan.
+ Flinches all turrets and does viable damage as well.
Since this gun deals Normal, it works well on not only Howlitzers, but Gun/Rocket Pups and Polyps too.
+ It's not a "Niche" weapon.
Since the Iron Slug deals Normal, it doesn't work best at certain situations; it works well in any situations, compared to Callahan's usage.
Cons:
- Normal damage is frowned upon for some reasons.
Besides, there are other Normal weapons that outdoes Iron Slug, like the Blaster series in terms of DPS. Also, gunslingers are more dependent on Specialized damage types, as mentioned above. Since it deals pure Normal, it loses its strength to Beasts and Fiends, as mentioned.
- Cannot cause Stun.
Unlike Callahan, Iron Slug cannot stun enemies, making its user's life more miserable in dealing with agile enemies, compared to Callahan, but its flinching abilities helps out slightly.
- Doesn't work well in Lockdown.
Besides, its attack speed is so slow, that you'll end up getting hit first before you even fire. Even if you did, you would still get your butt handed to the more agile and faster players.
- Low DPS vs. other weapons.
As mentioned above, it is meant for defensive purposes, like Callahan.
Some may go for Callahan's Piercing and Stun, whereby others may go for Iron Slug's awesome design and Normal, but it all depends on what you're more comfortable with.
guys guys
first look at the op date
then look at the current date
then look at the op date again
then work out the difference
then facepalm
couple things to consider:
first off, callahan and iron slug have same range, if not in favor of callahan (iron slug description says it has better range than mega magnus, think you got it mixed up)
second, callahan deals pure piercing damage, iron slug deals pure normal damage.
third, both guns are slightly unpopular due to the fact they immobilize the shooter. the effects of the charge attacks become drastically more important in this aspect. callahan's charge will knock you back 2 squares (whatever that means). iron slug has a chance to stun you.
personally, i'm leveling my mega magnus to turn it into callahan. the charge knockback seems like it might give you chance to get away, while it's almost the only gun where wolvers won't be able to dodge until after they're hit. that, and it sounds cool.
