Newbie’s guide to Equipment

Armament:
Get a Calibur to start. This is the ultimate multipurpose sword, and will serve you well all the way up to 5*. I would also recommend a status alchemer (Volt, Cryo, Firo), as they are more effective against constructs, the enemies you will probably want to keep your distance from. If you want to play bomber, you can try working up a Blast Bomb or Haze Bomb line (fire or ice), but keep in mind most bombs are dramatically underpowered until they reach their 5* forms. Don’t use any weapon line that doesn’t go up to 4* at the very least. (namely, hot/static edges and assorted 0-1* swords/guns/bombs)
Armor:
Wolver gear is popular for a reason. It provides similar defenses as the Cobalt line, and better bonuses to boot. Other sets to consider as a main armor are the Spiral Demo series, the Magic Hood/Cloak series, and the Spiral Plate Mail series. The reason is that all of these sets culminate in 5* forms that give normal/elemental defense, or in the case of the Spiral Demo series, greatly enhanced weapon power (Mad Bomber). As with weaponry, don’t pick lines that end at 3* or below.
Why is elemental defense so important? Because Puppy Turrets are found in almost every single level, and due to their long range and aggro radius, they are the most difficult to dodge. This is particularly true if you are facing down other enemies at the same time. An additional reason is that in T3, Puppy Turrets deal pure elemental damage (most other monsters still deal some amount of normal mixed in). Piercing defense is least important, as sources of piercing damage are almost all very short-range or melee, and thus much easier to dodge or shield. And although shadow damage from Fiends and Devilites is as dangerous as turret fire, they are seldom encountered outside of Fiend strata or Infernal levels.
Shield:
Again, due to the above reasons, the Owlite series is highly recommended. Not only does it protect against normal and elemental, it defends well against shock and fire, the two most dangerous status effects. If you truly dislike the design, then anything providing good normal defense and health are passable alternatives; just remember that you will be at a slight disadvantage without elemental defense on your shield deeper in Clockworks. The same applies, pick shield lines that go up to 5*. The one exception is the Swiftstrike Buckler (3*), but if you’re using it successfully then you don’t need this guide.

Advancement:
As you open up a third weapon slot (very much worth the 250 energy), you will want to acquire additional weapons to exploit enemy weaknesses. For a swordsman, this probably means a piercing sword (Flourish, Snarble Barb) or an elemental sword (Avenger line, or Fire/Ice Brandish if you don’t want to wait till 4*), and eventually a shadow sword (Nightblade or Faust, depending on your style). Gun loadout remains the same; just work your way up your chosen Alchemer line. If you are preferentially a gunner, you may want to start the Magnus or Silversix/Blackhawk line for piercing damage (the former is better in most situations, as it deals pure piercing). For bombs, the freeze line of the Haze series is excellent for crowd control; the fire line is better for adding some damage. If you are a bomber, you may also want the Blast Bomb line and the Spine Cone line.
Continue building your chosen line of armor and shield; unless you are paying real money for your CE, then odds are it is too expensive to start a second line this early on. Once you do get the funds, you may wish to consider a secondary shield (Bristling Buckler line, Skelly Shield), and a normal/shadow defense set for tackling Fiend strata.

As always, any guide should be taken with a grain of salt, as play styles vary tremendously between players. What I find hard, you might consider a piece of cake, and vice versa; therefore, pick your gear accordingly. The only hard and fast rule is to have fun!

Edit: Suggested Skelly Shield series in place of Crest. Chances are, if you can obtain a Crest you don't need this guide. Thanks MLC! =P

Thank you

Thanks for this, I was wondering why no one made one yet.
I know its listed in other guides, but bits and pieces of them. If someone can expand on this one, it would be great.

Just a quick question. I crafted a Unique Variant Calibur that does Low damage to constructs. How does it become
medium damage or more to constructs? Does it change to medium when I craft a tempered calibur?

Regarding Heat... do you get to choose which weapons gain heat? Is there a specific order things gain heat or is it distributed evenly to
all gears that isn't level 10?

Each time you upgrade that

Each time you upgrade that Calibur, you'll have the option to either keep the current UV, or try rolling for a new one. But if you choose not to keep the current UV, you may wind up with a completely different UV, or most likely no UV at all. Players who are trying for good UV gear will generally make a large quantity of the lowest level item (the 2* Calibur, in this case) until they get a UV they like, and then upgrade the "keeper". There is no mechanism in the game at present for upgrading the UV on an item.

As for Heat, it's evenly distributed among all equipped items that are less than level 10. Needless to say, if you're trying to level 5 items at once, it will take 5 times as long if you're only leveling one.

Bravo

This is a great resource for new players; thank you for creating it.

My one suggestion is to remove Crest of Almire from shield suggestions... I feel it's a teensy bit beyond the scope of an Equipment Guide for New Players ;)

Not at all. UVs are

Not at all. UVs are inordinately expensive and you can get by just fine with "vanilla" gear. That said, certain UVs do provide a significant edge. As a new player, the really good UVs will be out of your price range, but some inexpensive ones that can really make a difference are:
CTR low. Because charge timers reduce on a linear scale (up to 6 percentage ticks at Maximum), these will give you the most bang for your buck. Haze bombs are pretty inexpensive, and if you are building it up to 4-5* with bomber gear, it helps to at least have CTR low.
DEF low. There are plenty of low pierce/normal/shadow/elemental/status UV gear out there, and if you're patient you can snag something at little increased cost. It won't give you a big edge, but you will take a teeny bit less damage.
Damage vs. low. If you can find a weapon that plays up the damage vs type (like Voltech damage vs. construct low) you will get a slight but hopefully noticeable improvement in your game.

I personally would HIGHLY

I personally would HIGHLY recommend a Nightblade and further upgrades to it. It does half normal damage and half shadow damage. The key is that slimes are weak to shadow damage and thus, the blade crits them. Any newer player is likely going to go through the slime kingdom countless number of times, and this blade pays off in spades so long as you do so.

So are the UVs with "low"

So are the UVs with "low" boosts still pretty useful or should I not be too picky when crafting weapons for a possible UV? And if I'm looking for a weapon with a specific UV, would it be better to buy it (probably easier to find the specific weapon) or do a lot of crafting (and maybe sell the extras)?

One question: I'm a newbie, using my energy to craft haze bombs are a good option to make money?

More Advice

UV's against status effects (especially fire and shock) are useful even if Low; defense bonus UVs I have not checked, but presumably even Low helps a teeny bit. For any player really, it is easier and usually cheaper to buy a premade item with a UV than to craft for it yourself. Because of the way the RNG works, don't craft what you can buy- save yourself the frustration. The exception are the super-wealthy players who can afford to blow through 5k CE looking for that UV Maximum! on some item; even then, most of them buy their UVs.

To answer URIKz's question, only if you are crafting with mist energy. Haze bombs are cheap enough that you can vendor the unwanted ones for 300cr, recovering the material cost and crown cost. The 10 energy still comes out of your pocket though, so if you're just burning some mist, crafting haze bombs is not a bad idea. On the off chance you get a CTR med or higher, you win the lotto. That said, it will serve you better overall to craft a 2* armor, shield or weapon and put it on the Auction House for a reasonable price. You'll get fewer chances at a lottery-winning UV, but the byproducts will still net you a small profit.

Is there any merit to the Autogun lines?

Is there any merit to the Autogun lines? I'm currently T2, and I'm trying to upgrade my own. Is it worth the effort, or should I just go for an Alchemer?

Also, am I better off crafting my own items, or buying them?

You need fire resistance

I started with the Wolver line as well, but if you're thinking long-term like T3 and Vanaduke, then fire resistance is a must! I wish someone had told me that at the beginning. Either get helmet/armor with fire resitance or make sure you have at least medium UV fire proteciton. I'm now working towards Grey Feathered Cowl (low shadow UV) and Divine Mantle (med curse UV). This will give me normal and shadow protection and max elemental plus max fire and shock (the two worst statuses in my opinion) plus great curse protection for my Faust.

Bottom line - get fire resistance with your 2* gear!!

Wolver gear can turn into Vog Cub at 5*, but it is sooo trendy that I'm avoiding it. There's lots of other fire resistannce options or just make sure you have fire UV.

@Pika_power - Most people

@Pika_power - Most people aren't too high on the Autogun. I haven't played with anyone in T2 or T3 that uses it. I have one that I occasionally use as a just-for-fun gun in T1 and will eventually upgrade through the Needle Shot line, but I have other higher prioties. For me, it looks cool, but when I want to go on a serious run I leave it behind. But, don't forget to have fun with this game. Some posters will tell you how terrible a weapon/armor is, but you know what, if you're having fun, then who cares?

For the most part, you're better of crafting your own items, but it's a matter of time. For crafting, you have to obtain all of the materials and there's an energy cost, but you can craft as many times as you want (as long as you have the resources) and sell what you don't want at the auction house. But, if you want something now (don't want to spend the time to do dungeon runs to obtain the crowns and materials) then buying is the best option. I usually craft, but occasionally I buy. I bought my magic cloak with med curse UV for only 5K crowns at the AH, a great deal! And on days when I don't play I craft 2 2* items with my ME and sell at AH so I make money even when I'm not playing.

Heater Shield is pretty decent. I really like fire on the shield because it lets you tank flamethrower fire like a beast, but with the recent fire nerf it should be slightly less of an issue. The freeze resist will be nice vs. Slush Puppies and freezy projectiles.

In short, any shield that gives normal/elemental with a little extra something is a good choice; anything with good normal defense is viable.

As a player who's just

As a player who's just getting out of the "newbie" category, I highly reccomend not using the calibur and going on the wiki to research what 2 star weapon you prefer. I highly reccomend cutter, it has done me well so far. If you're going cutter I reccomend:

-Wolver->Skolver set
-Barbados Thorn Shield
-Blitz Needle or Argent Peacemaker

The thorn shield is a pain to get though. Through my calculations you have to kill the boss 4 times with max 60 energy to get to each, so be prepared to grind a bit

This looks like a good place

This looks like a good place I could ask a question.

Should I keep my Owlite shield and upgrade it to 3, 4 and 5 stars, or should I buy and upgrade the Bristling Buckler instead? What do you think will be better?

@Noctuelle Owlite has good

@Noctuelle
Owlite has good elemental defense (unfortunately always useful) plus fire and shock resistance. For me that makes it much more useful, all around. It's, as usual, a question of style and of preferences but the only times I regret my grey owlite, is when I don't have it!!!

[I use my skelly shield for fiend-based strata and end up taking massive damage from puppies,
I never miss having a better piercing defense since I don't find wolvers or jellies to be that dangerous anyway...].

Calibur

@Kerma
The calibur is a fantastic weapon all the way up until 5*. I would recommend it to anyone, i'm currently working on a divine avenger but will always use the calibur line. It has a brilliant charge attack and can hit everything for good damage. it's not just a "newbie" weapon, it can be used anywhere effectively.

Also, I would recommend going from Wolver -> Vog Cub because fire resistance is a must for the higher tiers in my opinion.

Is there a recommendation on

Is there a recommendation on which line to take the calibur at 4* and 5*? I figured just the Leviathan since it would be multipurpose whereas the Vanquisher is more undead damage. Which would be best for just a beginner player not spending money for energy (so probably won't be getting multiple gear of any sort for a very long time lol)?

Hey, I'm a somewhat new

Hey, I'm a somewhat new player and I would like some advice on the gear I have at the moment cause I suck at making decisions.

Right now I have a Magic Hood with low freeze resist UV and a Dusker Coat and I've been using a Skelly Shield to compensate for my lack of shadow defense. I'm wondering whether or not to get a different shield in the future and upgrade to a Divine Veil. I want to avoid using an Owlite Shield as it seems a bit... overused and it'll conflict with me upgrading my hood as they both use the same materials, but if there's no other choice then I will have to. I have a Calibur which will soon become tempered and a Blaster as my secondary.

Am I making good choices? Is there anything I should be looking to replace/add? I'm trying to not spend any money on CE if that makes a difference.

more advice

@bigrusty1: If you're on a budget, definitely a Leviathan Blade. Fantastic 360 high-knockback charge attack, decent damage on everything, decently fast swings- the only other sword that might be argued to be 'better' is the Divine Avenger. Cold Iron Vanquisher is neat looking, but inferior to Levi in pretty much every way. The bonus damage vs. Undead is not worth the much weaker charge attack and basic damage (the status bars lie!)

@xsaard222: Sadly, under the current system trying to cover all your bases just leads to mediocre performance. Think of it this way- would you rather that you were a little below average in every strata, or above average in most strata, and much worse than average in a few strata? Stacking normal/elemental will make Fiend strata your weakness, but you will come out ahead everywhere else due to the prevalence of Puppy Turrets. You can learn to cover for your piercing weakness by dodging jellies and wolvers (fairly easy); it is much harder to dodge mobs of Devilites. The Magic Hood series is decent, although I would recommend against turning it into a Divine Veil. Your first complete 5* armor set should probably be two pieces that stack normal/elemental, and a shield that defends normal/elemental, and you should aim for some fire resist. There are ways to achieve this other than Vog/Owlite (check the wiki), but the cookie-cutter build is cookie-cutter for a reason. The only rule is to have fun- I won't say "I told you so", nor will I care if you say "ha, I made it work", but I do hope you enjoy whatever path you choose. =)

Unless you're really sure about what you do, lack of normal defense is always a big weakness (even in T3).
