Are 5* crafting mats really rare? I just did a solo run from d17 all the way to the bottom and I didn't find even one single 5* mat. Is that pretty normal or did I just have really bad luck?

Not bad luck.
3 5* mats in one run is amazingly -good- luck. I ran all of T3 yesterday and got no 5* mats as well. I'd say it's roughly even odds whether you get a 5* mat in a core run or not, maybe a bit better than that. Getting more than one in the same run is really lucky.

The random number god can really hate you when it comes to 5* materials. ...on the other extreme, I think I recently got three of them in a run TO THE TERMINAL. Too bad they weren't very useful/valuable ones.

srsly tho, if youre desperate for some sunsilver, 20forge sparks isnt a big ask. if youre desperate for a flamesoul or whatever, 5k cr isnt much. :P

As with all mmorpgs, rare
As with all mmorpgs, rare drops are all about luck. I've had T3 runs where i only get like a few common 4* drops only and other runs I've gotten 3-5 5* drops. My best I think was 5 drops. 2 Philo feathers, 2 flame souls, and 1 sunsilver on a citadel run. If you want to increase your chance you should try to fight in arenas as there are more monsters to fight. From my experience the best T3 places to get these 5* items are:
Flame Souls: Citadel. Tons of fire skellies.
Philo Feathers: Scarlett Fortress. Good amount of Ghosts kitty kats.
SunSilver: Jigsaw Valley or Construct Arena. Good amount of Gunpuppies.
Reaper Rib: Graveyards and Citadel. Skellies everywhere
The others I have not found a good map for. Royal Gel Cores seem to be easy to get in any T3 map with Jellies. I've gotten every 5* drop except spark of life. I haven't even seen it drop before in any run I've done, both solo and group.
A citadel run "should" get you a 5* item more often than not, lol.

Oh, yeah.
Firestorm Citadel has these huge levels so naturally more drops. Arenas are good too, and don't limit you to reaper ribs and flame souls as all you can find. Scarlet Fortress levels are mostly short but you could wait for the longer ones if you can remember the difference.

I was soloing, doing a quick T3 recipe run when I got three Primal Ores from the same depth. Not very useful mats, but was very surprising.

lol. one time I got TWO flame souls , a few reaper ribs, AND a volcanic iron. Maybe it was a shadow steel... or both... Amazing run.

Dark Cities and Cravat Halls
Dark Cities and Cravat Halls normally have good drops in T3.
