Agreed

They probably should make some more feminine armor, I have also mistook many girls on the game for guys.. it's awkward to say the least.

Amibiguity

This game revolves around the fact that the creatures we play as (the Skylark Knights) have no predefined gender. To add female equipment to the game would remove that aspect entirely. Not to mention OOO would have to make that a part of the Knight creation menu recreate all the armor in female forms so that the stats will remain balanced. I'm a guy who stands up for girls and all but this game removes sexual barriers more than any other game and I think it does well in not having gender specific armor. It's like the army, girls don't get diffrent uniforms just because they are girls. They wear the same outfits as everyone else.

Gender equality occurs at the point where you can look at a person and say, "Hey man, hey dude, hey bro" unaware of or regardless of whatever gender they might actually be. *wise guru pose*

With that said... I approve of ANY new styles of armor, and some styles may be viewed as more masculine or feminine than others, and that's okay so long as people don't get into stupid arguments of "Hey you can't wear that armor you're a guy!"... I mean, we're here to explore the clockworks, not go speed-dating, right?

I like the idea that the characters are gender neutral. Who knows, maybe the knights don't have a gender. maybe they are a future version of the constructs we fight and the planet had a strong pull to recall it's 'children'. when you see the Snipes do you see a male or female Snipe.

when you see any creature in game do you see male or female, no. they are all gender neutral (ok the JK is male, but makes new jelly's, not sure about vd)

King does not mean male

King is mearly a title of leadership. In the web comic Two Kinds the kind of one of the races is in fact a female. That the word "King" must be associated with a male is a common misconception. So the game is, in fact, completely gender neutral.

Yes the creatures are gender

Yes the creatures are gender neutral however the equipment is predominately masculine. Currently the only real options for feminine costumes are the spiral tailed helm and the Angelic line.
I'd like a few other things that suggest femininity.

Again I point to the US Armed Forces

None of their equipment is "Feminine" but it never get's complained about. If they add "Female" armor it needs to simply variations to current equipment or costume only. It's not fair that girls get their own equipment just to make themselves stand out that if a male tried putting on would be ridiculed.

Whoa, guys, I don't think s/he meant uniforms that are skanky and the like (it's not a dating simulator after all) or overly done dresses and stuff. We mean (hopefully every girl agrees with this) armor and the like that is maybe a little more curvy looking for girls, a little bit less bulky. Maybe with a few more ornaments, etcetera. But not enough to render changing all the status around -- whether boy or girl the armor should give the exact same protection and whatnot it gave from the start.

*cough*When girls are starting they can get a Spiral Starter Helmet that looks like it has pigtails*cough*

We just mean a bit more interesting and not so bulky or drappy designs. The dude version would look one way and the girl version another. And I don't mean you'd have to craft one for the dude and one for the girl. It's the same as if you were giving a pile of cloth and told "alright, put it on." Naturally guys will dress one way and girls another, simple as that.

So there be no male divine veil, female divine veil and stuff like that. And I agree some stuff just should go neutral -- like the divine set and armor like that. It'd look the same no matter the gender since it's a bunch of loose cloth and a blanket drapped over you (a very pretty and likeable blanket and hood I might add).

I'm not saying sacrifice functionality for appearance.

But take for example Ragnarok Online (please don't kill me >.<), both male and females can have the same classes -- yet the female uniform is slightly different from a male's one and so on. No varyation in stats, no making one better than the other. They're both the same -- it just looks different the way it's worn and stuff.

And true, King does not mean male -- it's just a rank.

King does mean male..

Actually, king does mean it has to be a male. I typed in "Define King" in Google and i'm quoting the definition it gave me:

"The male ruler of an independent state, esp. one who inherits the position by right of birth."

So, in theory they could also make a queen jelly just by making it vice versa.

I dunno what to type here now, but refuse to leave it blank. O:<

You have to remember this word was created waaay back when everything was sexist. But like CorianWornen said nowadays the meaning for it has changed, it's more a tittle. King over-ranks Queen status -- but many novels and games and the like allow women to be referred to as Kings when ruling over something.

----

BAck to topic, like I said. I'd like that when I equip some armor on it might look a bit more feminine since the game knows I am a girl than when a boy equips it -- but no male x armor, female x armor. Equipment only meant for one gender or the other is silly -- especially in a game that you're going around hacking and slashing and shooting monsters left and right.

I'm just saying maybe more ornamented or worn slightly different in one gender compared to the other. And heck, if you're a boy and want to play as a girl knight who am I to say anything about it? It's such a common thing in the Internet already anyways. :P

There is, however, a King

There is, however, a King Tinkinzar ( http://wiki.spiralknights.com/King_Tinkinzar ).

It would be nice to have armor and helm options with a more feminine appearance. Gender-neutral does not mean everyone is masculine, after all. Nor do visual styles that are commonly associated with 'masculine' or 'feminine' traits always have to be tied in to them in every setting. For the Spiral Knights, it could simply be a different style of armor with no gender distinction inherent in it for them.

Regarding the term "King", its primary definition does indeed have it as a term that applies only to males, but using words with established definitions to mean something slightly (or completely) different is a classic trope of both fantasy and science fiction in all forms of media.

CorianWornen, you are wrong. The game does not revolve around the Spiral Knights having no predefined gender. Gender is simply irrelevant to the plot and setting of Spiral Knights. (Or, if you will, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.)

Additionally, while Two Kinds does have a female King, that is not because King is a gender-neutral term in real life, but because it is a gender-neutral term in one particular nation in that setting. As you'll recall, Natani's brother was surprised when Natani told him the Basitin's King was a woman. ( http://twokinds.keenspot.com/archive.php?p=591 )

Please

I'm sort of a girly girl, I will admit. But I'm an amazing gamer as well. And I admit it, I wear the pigtails because...yeah, they make me look like a girl. Honestly the only reason why I don't pick another helmet. (Except for the Angelic one I'm aiming for because of the ponytail) I don't really see what's wrong with wanting to be a knight and still wanting to look like a lady.....who happens to wield a very deadly sword. I was looking through armor trying to decide on which one I wanted and immediately picked the Skelly Suit because, first, I LOVE the claws, and secondly, it's form fitting and simply looks good. ...But then I saw the higher star versions. And they're big and bulky and it was incredibly unexpected. I know that this game is supposed to be gender neutral but the fact is, a lot of the equipment isn't gender neutral. They're...manly. So there should at least be some sort of balance. If my player color wasn't pink and I didn't wear the pigtails, I don't really know what would keep other players from automatically assuming I'm a guy (because even though the game is gender neutral, the people BEHIND the character are not) and honestly, I don't want to be recognized as a guy. xD; Feel feel to call me dude and bro and whatever name you choose to but the fact remains that...yeah...I'm not a boy. I'm not anyone's bro and I don't want to look like one. xD; It shouldn't stop guys from wanting to wear whatever armor they want to, but it shouldn't limit girls to have to pick from a selection of, quite frankly, man armor. Because that in itself removes gender ambiguity considering everything is designed for the male taste. There wouldn't really be a need to recreate armor in female forms considering when the knight does wear form fitting clothing (like the Skelly Suit) the body is in enough of a thin shape to suffice. But I think there should be more armors and helmets created that have more of a feminine feel to them.

Like I said before, look at the US army. Guys and girls both wear the same armor and no one complains. Because the appearance doesn't matter. It is kind of stupid (and imo would be kind of offensive) to make armor that had diffrent stats but was intentionally more feminine. This could create amazing stats on a piece of armor but many MALE players would refuse to wear it for the same reason your complaining about wearing the gender neutral armor. Let's face it, what the hell is the point of thin armor. Armor is ineffective if it's to thin so as you make it better you make it bigger, that is true throughout history, and throughout the genders. That it has become such an "Important" detail to players is kind of saddning for the simple fact that I'm sure OOO didn't include much in the way of gender based equips (the pigtail starter being the only truely feminine one, guys can be known to have pony tails too you know) for the simple fact that it helped people shut up about gender diffrences. If you really want a game that varies the armor based on gender (and gets plenty of unwanted talk in game because of it) go play Perfect World.

But that's a false analogy. This isn't the U.S. army. It's a game. And I'm pretty sure being in the army is more serious and life threatening than an MMORPG. When you're in the army, your primary goal is to not be spotted by the enemy and complete your mission. You're not exactly trying to show off the oh so feminine way you draw your AK. And why is it fair that FEMALE players refuse to wear some armor for the very same reasons? Because there are so truly amazing armors but I won't wear them because yeah, they do make me look like a guy. And even though the costume feature is there, there isn't actually much for me to even work with. I think you're taking this extremely too seriously in terms of the "what's the point of thing armor anyway" thing. What's the point of having a shield that looks like a freaking owl? THERE IS NONE. It's purely purely for creative purposes which with the character system OOO created, character design is something that they took into consideration. And I didn't say I wanted full out girly armor that guys won't even touch. But armor that will at least give girls more options.

The thing is, there is no gender ambiguity. There really isn't. You're making the point of females in the army not complaining about their uniforms without addressing the fact that, hello, they are STILL male designed uniforms. And the armors here are still MALE designed, they're not gender neutral. There are still sexual barriers considering everyone is automatically assumed male. Look at the upgraded star levels of the Skelly suit, they are big and bulky and MASCULINE, not neutral, and yet that doesn't matter as long as guys can still wear and girls just have to deal with it. I'm actually a girl so this is from a girl's viewpoint in terms of playing this game.

yes

I kind of agree with Pynk and others.

While I would realy realy hate to see SK becoming a dress-up game with tons of girly clothes, I would like to have the possibility to pick my gender on the Character Creation screen.
And - as said above - the female armor would just be a more... curvy and not so masculine.
Just a minor change in the design, nothing more.

I'm not the kind of girl who loves pink and colored flowers and butterflies and all that "girly" stuff.
However, I'm still a female and as such, I like to look like one even in games :)

By the way, that argument with US army uniforms wasn't very good - even in unisex clothes, females still look like females (providing they have feminime curves) ;)
