There should be a gender symbol at the end of each player's name.

Let's just use "Peter123" as an example.

Peter is obviously a boy, so his name would be "Peter123 ♂"

I hope you get my point.

Oh, and by the way. This would be an option to choose between as you create your character. Players who already created their account, would be able to set this option somehow ...

@DevilXTreme, you would have to trust the person then. They could always say they were the opposite gender eitherway.

Right..

Im not sure why you would want spiral knights to feature online dating services.. Gender is obsolete from games, there is no way of knowing for sure anyones gender and the necesity to be able to stick a sign above your head pointing out if your a girl or a boy is completely useless unless you have dating intent which the game is not for as gender plays no role in a game.

No!

This simbol could be in Inspect menu you know you click on somebody INSPECT then you see his EQ, and in top corner of this window could be gender icon :-).

I dont want this icon over my nick...Pusio is good your option " Pusio♂ " looks weird.

I agree with Brynnza - it's a pointless, intrusive feature that adds nothing to the game and is potentially setting up people for unnecessary abuse. You ever read a blog called Fat, Ugly or Slutty? You should.

So, you are asking to be able to see people's gender, right?

So, you are asking to be able to see people's gender, right? Well...

*looks at previous experiences with MMOs and online gender stuff*

Sorry, no. No, no, no and no. No. Also, no. And NO with strong big letters.

Why do you want to know if someone is a guy or a girl? I mean, guys AND girls have hands with fingers, so they can play equally, it doesn't make a single difference to the game.
Is this about some of those "internet social stuff"? I talk with everyone (guys, girls, guys pretending to be girls, girls pretending to be guys, dogs, cats, waffles) equally, I don't need to see people's gender to adapt my way to talk to them or something like that (except "he/she/it" stuff, but I always call other knights by their names, so no worries to me).
And yeah, I don't play online games to get a virtual girlfriend or something (like half of the PSU-demo community).

So, I don't know why would this be relevant in a game where you hack'n'slash your way through dungeons to get new shiny swords (so you can hack'n'slash more).

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I understand and accept more feminine gears (like the other topic), customization stuff is always welcome, but this is useless.

@LeonAlabard, Err ... Excuse

@LeonAlabard, Err ... Excuse me? Just because you don't see the point in a gender symbol, doesn't mean other people don't.

In fact, I know a lot of female players who find it annoying when someone call them a boy or whatever. All I'm "SUGGESTING" is a gender symbol, yeah on the player card, like Sutirem suggested. That'd be great, lol.

I don't have any problems with the whole gender thing myself, but I know a lot of players who would like to have this option. Anyway, what's this nonsense about Online Dating? Lol, you sir, just made me laugh. How can someone with their full fives combine a gender symbol, and online dating with eachother.

Go "hack'n'slash" some monsters, will ya'?

"what's this nonsense about Online Dating? Lol, you sir, just made me laugh. How can someone with their full fives combine a gender symbol, and online dating with each other."

Sir, you should play more MMOs (Suggestion: Phantasy Star Universe/Portable 2: great games, bizarre community), and maybe "travel in the Internet" some more. You will eventually find that the Magical Land of the Internet is surely a bizarre and insane place (and full of lonely freaks). Humanity can really make you laugh for the wrong reasons.
For some [awesome] reason, Spiral Knights is immune to this problem. I'm happy with it, and I would like to keep the Status Quo.

On a more serious moment:
Like I said on my edit, I'm ok some kinds of gender differentiations (like feminine gears), but I think that a simbol in my name/gamecard is useless. I don't see the point of "telling" everybody my gender by putting it in my name, and I don't think I would check a "gamecard" every time I wanted to talk with someone. Like I said, I call everybody by their names.
I can understand that some people find this kind of confusion annoying, but I personally don't find it that annoying. Sometimes people think I'm a girl (mainly because of my name, for some reason), but I just tell them that I'm a guy. "No hard feelings, let's just have some hack'n'slashing fun", end of the problem.

"Just because you don't see the point in a gender symbol, doesn't mean other people don't."
Well, like I also said, this is all personal experience and opinion. I never said everybody will hate your idea or something. I just said "my" opinion, not Spiral Knights Order's opinion or something like that.
I won't say "I'm ok with this" or "I'm indifferent so yeah", because I'm not ok with this at all. I personally don't think this will bring good fruits (You won't believe how many times I saw discussions like this one being turned into a sexist/homophobic promotion topic).
But other people might like this (just like the people you know and find this problem annoying), so if you think your idea will work and make the game a better place for everybody, keep going and bumping and advertising your idea.

....
But, seriously, the Internet is full of lonely freaks. Just give them a opportunity and they will spam their "NEED GURLFRIEND" "FEMALES ONLY LOL" like there was no tomorrow. This ruined a bunch of good online games to me (I can name a few if you need to know what to avoid in the internet).

This is pointless

The people that lie to you about their gender will lie on the thingy you propose anyways. Besides, some people may create a character who is intentionally not their gender. Not every character has to be a mary sue for the player.

I support more feminine

I support more feminine equips. Right now most gear makes you look like a robot.

I love the gear because I like looking like a robot - my friend likes looking like a girl tho XD

I do not support this idea because it doesn't make ppl "look" like they want, it just lets them say what they want... well they can do that already. If it's important that ppl know you're a girl or guy, just tell them. Someone joins just say "I'm a girl you know" and they can "..." and you can all move on to gaming b/c that part just really doesn't matter :\

Not everybody identifies as a male or female. But that's a whole new issue.

No, no, no, no, no. I am wholly and totally against this. If you want to know their gender, just ask. If you're afraid of them lying to you, they'd just lie on the gender stat, too. So there is no winning.

Right now most gear makes you look like a robot.

So... what are we? Do you know that we aren't robots? The problem here is that everyone who suggests "feminine" items or the ability to showcase your gender is still stuck up on gender roles. The Knights are clearly much farther advanced than that. Male or female you're going down to mine for minerals.

@martinsen5
I know a lot of female players who find it annoying when someone call them a boy or whatever.

I find it annoying when I wear the Firebreak Helm and everyone assumes I'm a girl, yet I do not support the ability to showcase your gender. Like Addy said: ask people if they're male or female. We don't need to publicly displayed.

@Dirt One of the best parts

@Dirt

One of the best parts of these mmo games is playing dress up. I enjoy dress up as it is because I like looking like a robot. Some do not enjoy it because they can't look like they want to.

I don't feel like ppl are really hung up on "gender roles" when they suggest a new way to look, as both girls and guys are going to take advantage of the new equips, and many will use them how they want regardless of their own gender, or even their character's perceived gender.

This is why I support adding new equips with new designs. More feminine gear, and more gear in general, while not supporting this suggestion. Basically more options are always a good thing imo ~ but what is suggested here isn't an option, but more of an info tag because this suggestion IS hung up on gender identity rather than player options.

--- I don't feel like you were disagreeing with me, or were being contrary in any way - you responded to my post in a way that I thought asked for clarity of my position --- so here it is XD

Do you know that we aren't robots?

I have evidence to say that the Knight race are indeed...NOT ROBOTS! By simple analysis of the game one can find that in the bazaar you can find a Knight working on a Mecha Knight and seeming to have massive complications with the system. This leads me to believe that they are indeed not robots. To be a fighting Knight there must be some form of education and one thing that would be basic in education is anatomy, so what kind of robot can't properly fix his own robot? I believe it is fully possible that the Knights have evolved past the physical differences of individual genders. The personality traits of the individuals however can still appear, just as human men can act girly and human females can act boyish. As such appearance changes in armor would be a purely aesthetic thing. They would need simply ad more feminine parts to pre existing equips so that they may get the stats they want while still projecting an air of femininity. But again, this is all assuming the Knights are in fact gender neutral biological beings. Though this would bring reproduction into question but this is something for another board.

Also I use the term Knight as the name for their race since there doesn't seem to be any other information on what they are.

I can tell you for a fact that they do have gender, since one of the NPCs is referred to as "her." But to say they are robots isn't too far-fetched a claim.

As I've said in other posts

Not sure if in this topic though (this convo has too up top topics right now) even if their species is gender neutral doesn't mean their personalities are. It is highly possible that what gender they are referred to are simply a matter of prefrence.
