Video game music is pretty cool.
I like music in video games, since I listen to music quite a lot.
So I'm going to post some game music and soundtracks that stand out.
Mostly from lesser known games.
I use the term lesser known sparingly because I know so many people play games that it's impossible to assume that nobody here has played at least one of these games.
But, here we go!
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven: Not a game very many people have played, but it has some of the most dedicated fans I have ever met. A lot of the people who played it originally still play it. It definitely exhibited concepts before it's time. Stuff that's really only becoming commonplace now.
One of my personal favourite games, really.
It's about 12 years old now, probably more than that.
Scorcher: This soundtrack was composed by Jesper Kyd, the guy that made the Assassin's Creed and Hitman soundtracks, as well as a number of others.
Very technoey stuff, somehow always manages to find a way onto my playlists. These tracks need a hardcore remix so badly.
Ape Escape 3: These games always had good soundtracks. They also have the best minigames ever. I think if they were marketed more towards the western audiences, Ape Escape could have become a much bigger hit. I used to think everybody had played Ape Escape, but apparently not many people did.
Wangan Midnight: Maximum Tune: This song actually appears in the later versions of the game as an attainable bonus soundtrack. This was composed by Yuzo Koshiro, the same guy who made the soundtrack for Streets of Rage. It doesn't even sound like video game music, really, which is why it's so great.
Darkened Skye: A game about skittles (the candy). Very funny game, I recommend it to just about everyone who is interested in games. Strange fact, when Skittles commissioned them to make this game, the only stipulation in the contract was that there were to be no snakes portrayed within the game.
Ridge Racer Type 4: The best Ridge Racer there is. I got a bonus with my copy, since the demo disc with the "upgraded" demo version of Ridge Racer wasn't in the one I bought, I got the original Ridge Racer with it instead. Two games for the price of one.
ReVolt: Racing games are featuring fairly highly on this list. I think it's just because they were so good for multiplayer. But yes, ReVolt is an excellent game. Had the best stunt mode ever. Also an exceptional track maker.
This is better than ModNation Racers, don't even bother buying that terrible game.
KKND: Krossfire: I had this on the Playstation. It's the best console RTS in existence.
Three way multiplayer (2 players and an AI), where you could be a 2v1 co-op team or free for all made for some good times.
Techno fueled my childhood. Not surprising in the slightest, considering the amount of video games with that kind of music existed in the 90s.
Need for Speed: High Stakes: ANOTHER racing game. This had music by real artists as well as stuff composed just for the game. One of the best soundtracks in a game, ever.
The game itself is also fantastic.
I guess I'll wrap up this post for now.
If people like this thread or request more music I'll post more.
Feel free to post your own favourite game music, if you have any.
Unsurprisingly, I find that the games that take the time to make exceptional soundtracks also have exceptional gameplay.
Also, the title is a parody of this song right here, if you were wondering.
Einhänder: Square's first and last 2.5D shooter. It's a great game for the Playstation for anyone who likes shoot-em-ups. It's music is generally upbeat techno tracks.
Wold of Goo: A physics game where you build towards a goal with little balls of goo, need I say more?
A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda: A game that takes pointers from Megaman and Contra. The game is sold as "episodes" and only one episode is out so far. A great game. Easy for anyone to pick up, hard to truly beat everything.
VVVVVV: A great 16-bit styled indie game where your only mechanic is to move the character and flip gravity. Navigate your player though many difficult puzzles. You will die... lots.
