So, I'm rather new to the game, and so far I've got myself a Magic Hood and Wolver Coat, providing me with both piercing and elemental defense as well as normal.
I recently alchemized a Scary Skelly Shield because I realized I had no Shadow Damage resist, although I still find myself taking a rather large amount of damage from shadow attacks and when I mouse over the "Gear" icon in the equipment page (the thing with the icon of your helmet in the bottom left corner) it shows I have no Shadow Damage resist.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?
Skelly Shield doesn't actually give me Shadow resist?
From what I can tell, your shield is separate from your character and they don't share each other's stats. It has it's own health bar which regenerates slowly, and all of the damage you take while the shield is active is directed to it instead using its own defense. But while your shield isn't raised, it's effectively doing nothing for your character (barring any extra abilities, like the attack speed increase of the Bristling Buckler)
Unless you are blocking with it, the shield gives you no shadow protection of any kind.

"Shields have defense and health, just like a player. When a shield blocks a hit, any damage that gets past its defense degrades its health. Once a shield reaches zero health, it breaks, leaving the player open to damage. When not in use, the health of the shield will regenerate. Note that the damage resistances of a shield only apply when the shield is in active use."
Press Esc, go to the controls section, and set the "Defend" button to something you can reach.
Does that apply to the status resists as well? It would seem strange to have the shield resist a status when you shouldn't get that status anyway if the shield is blocking the attack.
Apparently shields take extra damage when they absorb status effects. They take less damage when they resist that status effect. This is either true or shield status resist does nothing at all, but my source is a poster who's name I can't remember quoting a dev from memory on a post that he couldn't find anymore...
Certainly possible, and shield status doesn't do anything else you might expect it to do.
Shield status resistances mean that shields take significantly reduced damage from attacks that indlict that status effect.
You can test this by bringing an Emberbreak Shield into the Advanced Training Hall and seeing how long it holds up against the fire grate versus the ice or shock grate.
Thanks very much everyone, that was rather puzzling to me.
Actually the reason is Shield and Armor stats are different, having a shield with shadow defense allows you to block more shadow damage. Whereas Armor, Shadow resistance is decrease in damage taken from actual monsters.
