Starting from the 5th gate from the left (I think?), the gates are all unopened. All players can deposit minerals into them (or autosell, which does it for you). When you go to deposit/sell minerals manually, you can choose which stratum (group of depths) you want to deposit to.
The theme of a stratum (like, what kind of levels and what kind of monsters you meet) is determined by which types of minerals are the most common (ex: if Green and Yellow minerals, Valestone and Luminite, are the most common, we'll get a slime stratum, which might have stage themes like Aurora Isles, Scarlet Fortress, Lichenous Lair).

The mineral counts are affected by all players though. Actually, not too long ago, the community pulled together to build a mostly slime-themed gate.
