Frame Rate Drop [especially in the Ironclaw Munitions Factory]

So as per the sticky:

CPU: i7 920 [stock for testing purposes... just to rule out an unstable OC if anything]
RAM: 12GB 1600MHz DDR3
GPU: GTX580 1.5GB VRAM [Currently on 266.58 drivers for folding reasons, but also tested 275.33 prior to this post, same problem]
OS: Windows 7 x64 Enterprise

Issue:
I get framerate drops from a capped 60 to a ~30 in the Ironclaw Munitions Factory. Why is it a problem? Well my 920 is hovering at about 30% usage on one core and my 580 is hovering at about 40% utilization.

RAM usage also never breaks a 1GB point.. so yeah :\

I'm honestly lost.

I've both enabled and disabled v-sync, both instances cap at 30-32 frames for some twisted reason.

To add to the mystery, it happens both with Compatibility Mode enabled in Options and with or without Render Effects.

I've re-installed Java twice with clean SK installs. Tried the Shotgun Windows method twice in total, one with 266.58 and 275.33 respectively with no avail.

I use the Steam version of SK, but also tried the standalone installer... no dice.

Any help would be appreciated, and if any more info is required let me know ^^

Thanks in advance,
~Munky

This happens to everyone. All

This happens to everyone. All those mobile objects really slows the game down on any computer.

It seems like the Java VM will only work so fast because I see similar (nearly the same really) behavior on a different computer setup.

I did manage sort of a brute force "solution" by just cranking the core clock on my graphics card, but that does not tackle the root of the slowdown. Frames bumped just enough to be smooth, but the slowdown was still there.

Thanks.

You kicked my brain into gear! Set up a profile for javaw.exe though the nVidia Control Panel, set Power Management Mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance" and boom steady and smooth 60 FPS :D

I totally forgot to do this... simple yet perfectly effective ^^

[Spiral Knights is run off javaw.exe, just in case some didn't know :) It's located normally in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin" ]

:D

I've got this same problem

I've got this same problem running an AMD 6870. The game doesn't seem to utilize the graphics card anywhere near its fullest potential, and I'm getting some very noticeable dips in frame rate. It's still completely playable but it's incredibly irritating when you're sued to flawless FPS.

Anyone have any other solution? AMD doesn't have individual program profiles like nVidia does, so I can't use the same method as Munky.

I have the same problem, I

I have the same problem, I always lag in Ironclaw Munitions Factory, nowhere else. I have no idea why this is happening. Yesterday was laggy but totally playable, but today I cannot play it. I hope the developers will change it soon, I want to get my Catalyzer!

The change to 64-bit boosts

The change to 64-bit boosts framerate for some, perhaps 10FPS on higher grade to enthusiast hardware. It doesn't cure the "hitching" many users experience.

There are programs thats help reduce your lags and free ram.

You could try using a progam called game booster which helps free ram alot and makes a huge difference in speed in gaming. This should help reduce your lags. You could also try a program called advanced systemcare which boost your overall performance of your computer by cleaning up your computer, defragging, fix and delete unnecessary files. Overall should also lead to more fun improvement in your gaming.

Programs:
Game Booster (current version 2.41 and also recommended)
Advanced Systemcare (current version 4.0.1)

@nhanho25: both of those

@nhanho25: both of those applications are placebos. Neither really does much. GameBooster just kills off processes that are sometimes considered useless, but for us with 580's and 6870's it's completely useless. Same goes for Advanced Sys Care.

Back on topic, just did another run and frame rate is back down to 30, 580 utilization never broke 28%, and only two cores of my i7 920 hit roughly 30%... even with the profile for javaw.exe, seems I jumped the gun..

Oh well, 30fps lock ftl :(
