Most new players are playing WASD and mouse, which makes defending with x counterintuitive, I'd suggest adding middle click as the secondary button for this, and giving an overview of how to defend, like a part where you have to use it to get through fire.
Make shields more obvious to newbies.

Agree, sort of
I use WASD, left click to attack, and right click for shield. I would suggest this as a default setup. Moving with the mouse just isn't necessary.

I use the same setting, with weapon change on the spacebar. It is nothing short of natural and should be default, or at least a matter of simple choice over the default.
I use a controller, so I'm not sure which key to recommend, but I agree that new players need to made more aware of the Shield function.
