What is an energy turret?
Why is it that when your shield is on the last stage, you still get damage, what's the sense of that? (Or does it buffer damage?)

A shield has its own health
A shield has its own health bar. When your shield breaks, it means that the damage just taken is greater than the remaining health on the shield. You will take any extra damage that the shield did not absorb. Sometimes it's nothing, sometimes it's almost the full attack.
From my experience, if an attack breaks your shield, you only take partial damage.
