With a good set of 3D models and a little scripting, one could definitely set up input for a rapid prototyping machine based on swappable parts that fit together...
Like someone's character, for example...
Even if it's only "plastic grey", the customer could easily paint it themselves.

that is to say, at least it should be cheaper than the whole action figure thing, which I believe WoW fans had to shell out quite a bit for, and it's because WoW is a pretty big operation you could so...
