I made a friend of mine join the game.
He wants to be a kind of "tanker" so he wants to be able to take hits and shield while a dps with my gun.
I was going to tell him to take the whole plate set and shield but since every gate now have a lot of fire/electric/freeze damage, what do you think I should tell him to take?

For weapons...
Venom Veiler/Shivermist Buster are good Status Support. Since both Poison and Freeze got buffs, their benefits outweigh flat damage for support.
Graviton Vortex, it pulls monsters closer together so other players can maximize their DPS.
Great for big groups of monsters. Also looks extremely cool.
A three-hit sword like a Cold Iron Vanquisher. Or even better, a Divine Avenger.
It depends on what's available.
The Divine Avenger's charge attack shoots sword bullets, meaning it covers the weakness of not having a Gun equipped.
Vitasuit Deluxe is a pretty tank oriented piece of Armour. There are better alternatives to this though.
Grey Feather Set offers an Ultra Charge Time Reduction, as well as protection from Fire, Freeze and Shock. It's defences aren't too shabby either. It will allow him to offer up support with bombs a lot quicker and use his Divine Avenger charge attack more frequently.
Fallen Set has lots of added damage, as well as Fire and Poison resistances. It's defences are also quite good. The Curse weakness is the main issue with this set though, since Phantoms curse, protection from it isn't completely pointless. Extra damage isn't all that recommended if he wants to play tanky, but it's handy.
Bombastic Demo offers up good Fire resistance and Charge Time Reduction for bombs. The charge time reduction is available on every level of armour leading up to 5-star, making progress easier between tiers.
It's also easier to craft than the alternatives and has no drawbacks.
For a shield, I'd say an Omega Shell is the best choice. But something with protection from Fire may be good as well. Probably not as good now that shields can't block the Fire damage, but decent.
The Volcanic Plate Shield is a good alternative, it's also easier to acquire.
That's just my input on the matter, though.
Bombs, if he wants to be a useful "tanker" he'll need crowd control stuff. Status bombs with a blast bomb to keep crowd in checks works wonders.
Also if all he wants to do is held up a shield and walk around the mobs then you should tell him that would accomplish nothing.
