I mean, according to lore he *did* get ganged up on by two other kingdoms. Even I would be a bit paranoid after something like that to though. Plus, he doesn't really seem like he's doing anything wrong, I mean, the player *does* kind of just barge in. You can't really blame him for that.
Is Lord Vanaduke really such a bad guy?
That makes me think that the Gremlins aren't bad guys either.
I mean, they made the clockworks and everything. I think the Gremlins wanted to destroy Haven because it's their land. But to be honest, I think this is all a big misunderstanding. Even though it's hard to tell who's the bad side here.
We're the bad guys..seriously

Rather than necro that thread, I will respond to the sentiment that we are foreign invaders here:
The story details seem sketchy, but the gist is that Cradle is a motley assortment of the universe, all lured here like a Venus fly-trap. We were part of a massive ship with advanced technology and yet we inexplicably crash? Is there something I'm missing?
Seems to me we were the latest in Cradle's unwitting victims, except this time we can fight back: And fight back we shall.
SPOILER ALERT
From FSC Lore
Vanaduke began to whisper, reciting the names of his family, the names of the kings before him, and all the towns of Almire. He repeated this like a chant, increasing in intensity until he was shouting. With this he began screaming the names of the rival kings and all the wrongs they committed against his kingdom. He cried out to the god of the mountain to punish them, to give him the strength to take his kingdom back. In his frenzy he looked to the face of the deity and in it he began to see the face deform. The image burned into his eyes and brain like cinders, and contained that which sounded like the screaming of foreign tongues and war drums. With this, Vanaduke began to sink into the ash. He choked on the ash as it pulled him below, tasting sulfur his screams now sounding of roaring flames. Then transformed by the flames and cursed by the deity, Vanaduke was changed, armor fused to his skin, his hands turned to metal claws and beast fur grew along his back, the only feature to tell he was still Vanaduke was his face, even though twisted into the shape of a skull he was still recognized as who he truly was...
Many days later the citizens of Almire watched as fire began to erupt from the mountains. Leading an army of terrible fiends, Vanaduke returned to his kingdom, destroying the occupied forces of the two opposing kingdoms in a single day. In time the two kingdoms fell, Vanaduke's legion burning everything in their path. When he returned to Almire, it burned as well, for everywhere he went, and everything he touched was doomed to ash, thus while re-claiming his kingdom he destroyed it too. With nothing left to destroy, his legions left him and returned to the mountains, leaving the king to sit in his throne of ash and cinder, all the people of Almire dead around him.
---
We can infer from this that Vanaduke was once good but then he succumbed to power he could not control causing him to destroy the very things he wanted to protect.
---
There the cursed king has remained since, ruling a burning kingdom from an ashen throne, surrounded by the lost souls of those that once served him. It is there that the king still mercilessly destroys any who dare enter his kingdom.
---
TL;DR: Vanaduke is corrupted with power and will basically attack anyone who enters his destroyed sanctum. We're just a bunch of knights exploring and trying to reach the core.
Book by its cover
Just LOOK at him! ;)
Aww, c'mon! Take that scary mask away, and all you've got are two big, beautiful, bioluminescent eyes... Under all those intimidating metallic plates, there's bound to be a sad, but ultimately adorable alien spirit, with more cuddle-appeal than a mewkat. :3

That adorable alien spirit is trying to smush you with a mace.
@Astralis: smashing you with a mace is how the Almire say "hello, I'd like to be friends." So adorable.
@Rebirth: Where's that lore from? Is that in-game someplace? Have I missed it all these times?

Don't know the source. You'd probably have to ask a player from the Preview who also does wiki work.
Oh cool. Thanks for pointing that out. Seems I need to explore the wiki more.
No one is bad in the world of cradle.
Vanaduke has been cursed with enormous power, and he succumbed to it.
The Knights come and heal him.
The gremlins "rule" over the clockworks, work on it and blow it up.
They like to blow stuff up.
Especially intruders.
Slimes are sentient.
But nobody knows that.
Fiends want to finally go into holidays, but their bosses don't want that.
I would be pissed too.
The wildlife is wild.
From the thread NegimaSonic linked: "You guys have no idea, Basil is the FINAL FINAL BOSS. He has enough crowns to kill anyone."
My god, I can imagine him with MAX'd resistances on everything and a gun/sword/bomb for every occassion. O__O
He would also ride around on a motorcycle made from parts of our destroyed ship.
We need Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank to get inside The Core.... shhhhhh!
It's the same storyline as in every other MMORPG: if it drops loot that you want, then it must die. The amount of other story built around that focus varies from one game to the next.
