I'm wondering how elemental weaknesses stack across your gear. More specifically, I have a skelly helm, a magic cloak, and an owlite shield. Does the skelly helm's fire weakness get canceled out by the shield and cloak's fire resistance? I may end up keeping the skelly only for cosmetic purposes (thinking about replacing it with the chroma line), but as a low end Tier-2 knight I want to spend my money carefully. I'm also aware that varnaduke's attacks do fire damage; would the fire weakness be detrimental or would he just destroy me regardless :P ? Any advice about my armor is welcome.

While we're at it: voltech or cryotech? I'm a swordsman looking for a gun to complement my arsenal.

Shield and armor defenses are

Shield and armor defenses are counted separately so the Skelly's negative fire won't be canceled out by the shield's fire resistance. The Magic Cloak's fire resist will help to cancel some of the skelly's though. Skelly armor is great for fiend levels, really absorbs that shadow damage. But as you mentioned, don't bring it into FSC without plenty of experience avoiding fire.

Chroma line is actually a decent choice for armor, it isn't a popular choice though. Its advantage is that it gives a slime bonus to all weapons... but slimes are already one of the easiest things to kill.

I'd go Voltech, I prefer shock over freeze in guns. The Cryotech has the annoying quirk of breaking its own ice. Even so, the Cryotech is better for kiting mobs than Voltech because it can stop enemies cold, so it somewhat depends on your goal for carrying a gun... simply adding a ranged weapon or specifically to kite?

Shield stats are used to

Shield stats are used to calculate how much damage a shield can absorb before breaking. The status resistances on a shield allow it to withstand more hits from attacks that inflict that status effects.

You don't use a gun just to inflict a status effect because you can't always rely on them to inflict the status when you want them to. Bombs are for inflicting status effects reliably. Guns are for dealing with situations that are tough to handle with a sword or bomb. The status effects are there to augment the lower damage of guns.

I basicly only use my

I basicly only use my gun to draw attention away from team mates and to flip switches, hence why I use the blaster line 4* currently, OK damage for a pistol, and straigt up normal damage against everything.

I mostly want a gun for

I mostly want a gun for kiting, but I feel like it would complement the cutter. It seems like the cutter line swords require a lot of hit and run, so a gun would allow me to chip away at health (or freeze them) so I can just dash in and hack.

And I agree, bonus damage on slimes is lame. I found the chroma attractive mostly because it has no status weaknesses but has nice resistances :P. How much do UVs actually matter? Do damage bonuses significantly up your attack?

A Maximum Dmg UV will raise

A Maximum Dmg UV will raise your dmg about 40% compared to the same Non-UV weapon. So yeah, at After-Terminal T3, where you hit up to 300 each hit, 40% is a lot.
