It doesn't seem like there is a very big difference between the 2* gear and the 3* gear. Are the bars on the stats panel just misleading or is there really not that much of a difference? And then once it reaches 4* level, the stats just explode.

And another thing I'm curious about. Why would anybody ever use the Volcanic Plate shield over the Ironmight Plate Shield? They have the same Normal defense and Heath, but then the Ironmight has almost a full bar of Piercing on top of it. Is this another case of misleading bars?

As far as Volcanic Plate, and

As far as Volcanic Plate, and Ironmight you're trading that pierce resist off for Fire Resist. Fire is everywhere in this game. You wont face much piercing outside of Jelly Palace. Even then, there isn't much need for pierce defense. I can go into JP in full Vog, and a non pierce defense shield, and still solo JK along with every other floor.

True. Likewise don't listen to people saying you need fire resistance in FSC. Here is a recording of a guy who soloed FSC in Mad Bomber set which actually gives NEGATIVE bonus to Fire Resistance.

To make long story short: You don't need piercing defense in JP and you don't need fire resistance in FSC. The choice between Volcanic Plate Shield and Ironmight Plate Shield is all about aesthetic preference ;-D

I can guarantee that you will

I can guarantee that you will regret not having fire resistance in FSC. While it's fine to do when you're familiar with the zone, when you're new to the zone it will result in a massive number of deaths. This is the same for any area that you're unfamiliar with; it's extremely beneficial to use the appropriate defenses when you're new to a zone, but once you're familiar you can start doing weird/wacky things because you know exactly what to expect and how to avoid everything.

The bars shown on equipment really don't mean much. All they're really useful for is to show that a 4 star piece is weaker than a 5 star piece, or a 2 star is weaker than a 3 star. When you actually compare equal star gear, the bars are absolutely meaningless; there is gear with equal sized bars and different damage/mitigation, and there are even a few pieces of gear with more bars but less damage/mitigation.

Owlite is better than Volcanic Plate

It used to be true that there was little piercing damage to defend against, but that was changed a while ago.

Piercing is now very important - more important than fire resist, especially on a shield. Triples bites from a tier 3 alpha wolver can break a non-piercing shield. Throw a few of those in one place, like an arena, and you'll wish you'd had some piercing defense on your shield.

Fire resist is nice in the FSC, and you won't need piercing defense there, but then you'd be better off with the grey owlite shield anyway, for fire resist, normal defense, and elemental defense. Sure, you can use volcanic plate shield and survive if you're a decent player, but it's not the best option for those levels.

In tier 2, four star gear

In tier 2, four star gear gets nerfed down severely, but three star gear does not. So while four star gear is stronger than three star gear in tier 2, it's not a huge discrepancy, kind of like the difference between two and three star gear isn't a huge discrepancy. It becomes an enormous difference in tier 3, though, to try to make you get everything you want to use to four star if you're going to do tier 3.
