Do alpha-jellies drop *more* loot?

So a recent rumor has been plagueing my guild that "letting the liches combine" into a big alpha one drops more loot. Personally, I HATE alpha jellies. I argued with the guy who started the rumor, saying that he thought they were "easier" to fight than all the little jellies. Seriously.

So is it true. That alpha-jellies drop more loot than all the little ones, combined? I keep trying to tell him that the alpha basically just drops the combined loot from all the smaller ones.

I really need confirmation on this., 'cause everyone who's greedy enough to let other guild members suffer from the stupid giants is taking over the guild.

according to that at least big ones shouldnt drop any shards, im not sure about money drops, try it out and compare

@end that the weirdest conspiracy theory i ever heard o.O

its true tho, sometimes its easier in big sometimes in small shape..all depends on what gear ur wearing when playing with lichens
i just stay back, if my gear isnt appropriate for whatever scenario

I've seen Alpha Jellies drop

I've seen Alpha Jellies drop 2 separate items. (I think it was like a core and a shard) That seems like anecdotal support for 'combined drops', yes?

lichen colony loot

I've heard the "lichen colonies drop more loot than their component lichens" plenty of times, and by my rough observations, this seems to be a lot of BS. Sure, smashing up a giant enemy results in an impressive pile of coins and heat, but notice that each individual lichen also leaves some amount of coins/heat/drops. I would need to actually solo a bunch of lichen levels where I can make notes of what's dropped by each (then repeat for colonies), but my observational instinct tells me that there is no benefit to letting them combine.

If anyone has any direct evidence to counter or support my opinion, I would like to see it.

Under the strategy section of the wiki is the following:

it may be beneficiary to let them form into giant colonies before attacking so you will get increased heat

That revision was made June 1st, but there is no supporting evidence so take that as you will...

If this is still present, here ya go.

Old observations on the vanilla Lichen series indicated that loot dropped was based on how many of those purple cores were floating around inside them.

Many who looked closely at the Lichen Colonies noticed that one with a single core dropped nothing, while one with a grape tree at their center dropped very substantial amounts. I believe fully grown (small Lichen can no longer join) Giant Lichen Colonies always had the "max" number of cores.
Additionally observed was that Lichen Colonies did not have a number of cores reflecting the collective Lichen that combined, but was randomly determined on spawn (Lichen combining creates a new mob.)

In a way, creating Giant Lichen Colonies can indeed cause more loot to drop than otherwise, but there's always the chance you'll get the shorter stick.
If anything, Giant Lichen Colonies can drop a lot of hearts/larger hearts.

Again, these are old observations, and do not know if they still apply, as I don't pay attention to the cores anymore.
Since then, I realized they're more fun to me in battle. Mini-boss time -

I really don't believe this.

I really don't believe this. Plus there is a particular size lichen that if you kill it you don't get anything. I would go as far to say you get more from not combining it. I used to think this in beta but not anymore.

honestly, even if they did

honestly, even if they did drop more loot, what is it, another brute core? Like I don't have enough of those...
and more heat? There's plenty of ways to get that. In fact, I'd bet you get more heat from letting them combine...only because one like that stands a bigger chance of killing your teammates =T

As far as observations into their insides, I'm never able to see it since I play on compatibility mode and they are not translucent there. So all a big lichen colony is to me is an annoyance. I try to stop them from combining whenever possible. I am only happy to see them die if they happen to drop a lot of hearts but other than that. Forget them.

I personally let them combine

I personally let them combine when they are alone
I haven't noticed more loot or heat
but i just find it annoying killing 3 or 4 smaller ones.

and it's a good chance to practice shielding...
