What was the Skylark? Where did it come from? WHO ARE THE SPIRAL KNIGHTS?!

The whole world of the Clockworks is incredibly interesting to me. Add to that the origins of the starship Skylark and the Spiral Knights themselves. Who are these people and where did they come from? I understand how the larger community probably isn't terribly interested in this sort of thing. But as much as I enjoy a well constructed game, I appreciate a well created game world far more. So I think it would be interesting to create some for of fan-fiction within the Spiral Knights universe, and explore possible origins of the Clockworks, Skylark, etc. There is some information given away in-game, but nothing really solid. (Obviously because no player wants to spend their first few minutes of gameplay reading a wall of text to establish a background and plot that they couldn't give a flying flip about). But I feel like this would be extremely fascinating (to me at least), and I'm considering having a crack at it myself.

What do you think? Would a official extended (or unofficial for that matter) backstory be an interesting element to explore? Or is it all just a bone for the RP enthusiast out there?

No, you're not alone, I also

No, you're not alone, I also think it's all incredibly interesting. I wouldn't mind some official backstory, I searched on the Wiki but there is very little there.

I posted my idea on a possible film script, did you see check it out?

More backstory, do want. I

More backstory, do want.

I expect more of this WILL be revealed in game... eventually. After all, it's not like Three Rings is going to limit their updates to a few more bosses, weapons, and armors.

You can count me on that,

You can count me on that, too; I'd enjoy looking at any fiction, fan or no..

'Could see fan art being a nice thing and all. The Skylark must look awesome, given the vaguely steam/clock-punk aesthetic the Spiral Knights' technology has.

I do not imagine the Skylark

I do not imagine the Skylark as a ship, which I can you can tell by how I describe it in my fanfic on the other thread. Mainly because you see in the beginning of the game that your character has just crashed, but there are already other crashed pods and people who seem to be settled at the Rescue Camp. Not to mention that the Gates, the Arcade and Haven are all fully functional, so I don't see it how all knights can have crashed at the same time. I imagine the Skylark as a gigantic cluster of pods which are "attached" together by some kind of electromagnetic force, and they are travelling as a pack together across space. I picture as a kind of immigrant "ship", where each Knight pays for his or her own pod, attaches it to the rest and can migrate to another planet. For some reason, Cradle caused the Skylark to disassemble, and because of the dimensions of interstellar distances (and the sheer size of the podcluster), the Knights crashed at very different times.

That's the only explanation I could come up with! LOL! Also, I think it's interesting that nobody would know or remember where the Skylark was originally going, I think it builds to the suspense and perhaps the pointlessness of trying to activate the Skylark with energy from the Core. It was very common that immigrants in 19th and early 20th century didn't really know exactly where they were going - when my great-grandparents came from Poland to Brazil they only knew they were coming to "America" or "The New World".

Hmmm. I think that it would

Hmmm. I think that it would be rather quite hard to implement any canonised fiction for this game. Every play seems to have a very vivid personal view of how everything falls into place to set up the actions of the game as it is currently. But it's still quite nice to exercise your imagination in such ways!

My script for some background as of how you got there

[view fades into a scene of outer space, a spherical ship quickly passes by]
You: Alright captain I'm heading t'words my first mission
Captain (radio): Alright, tell us if anything goes wrong along the way
[after about 30 seconds your ship begins to rumble loudly]
You: captain my ship is rumbling, there is no know nearby source of gravity.
[captain thinks briefly, remembering that other knights said the same thing as there radio cut off. and on the same mission]
Captain (radio, extremely fuzzy and muffled): Knight turn away from there right now!
[you attempt to turn but your ship engines blow and you loose control]
[The ship rapidly flies in one direction, the captain tries to say something but the radio cuts off]
[The view around you suddenly changes into what appears to be a spiraling aurora]
[You suddenly exit this view, with a planet in front of you]
[You fly into the planet and crash land on a grassy field]
[The game starts]

Love fanfiction :3

I am totally up for this. ♥

I wouldn't consider it "official backstory"... more like unofficial backstory. But fanfiction is awesome nonetheless. In fact I kinda like the unofficial stuff more. Opens my mind to other people's creativity streams. :)

I think 3 rings will slowly leak out more as the game goes on so far they have added some or givin it to use it little bits and peices to keep our attention just by talking to people.
