And right at the end of the level where the crystals are, some strange purple symbols are beneath them.

it appears under all crystals of that stratum if im correct (wasnt it mechanized mile???)
According to the little tidbits of info handed to us through the game, they'd be the Devilites' 'sigils'. I don't remember the exact words, but the level description of a certain fiend level talks about burning their sigils into the ground to summon more devilites. Consequently they're all over fiend levels.
But in your case I think it's just to look pretty :)

like many things in a game, put to look good, absolutely no thinking about it included.
They show up under minerals in Fiend levels.
Don't think to hard about it. It's one of those things you just take how it is
