You heard me. Polearms. Halberds, you knights-a-spirals. Extended melee attacks. Slashing with reach.

How many of you have wanted to be one place but COMPLETELY CUT SOMETHING from far away? How often have you sat in your chair and wanted chopped sui without breaking a sweat? Chopped sui? Can DO-EY, I SAY! Polearms are the weapon of the future. No more will you have to use the full extend of your mechanical arm to slay enemies at spitting range!

Polearms are every sharp, electric, flamable, and frozen danger-things you can duct-tape to the long end of a stick. Their variety ranges from the all-purpose spear to the axe-headed halberd, and even posidon's fork: the trident. Their damage range is shortly wider than that of a sword slash, but extended away from the Knight so that the damage is dealt 2 squares away. And the satisfying feel of the carnage you'd deal with it? Mmm-nmm! Just like Mother used to make.

Now let's go into detail of Swords and Polearms so you can get an idea of what kind of weapon we're dealing with;

Swords...
...Deal full damage and are the strongest, fastest weapon.
...Keep you moving.
...Slash in a cone that extends around 1.5-2 squares in front of the knight (meaning anything within 0-2 squares of the knight's attack will be hurt).
...Come in several varieties and act differently according to their type (Normal blade, Brandish, Heavy, Flourish, "Spur").

Polearms...
...Deal full damage at a distance.
...Plant you on the ground in some instances.
...Slash in a wider cone than the sword.
(But here's the kicker!) CANNOT damage enemies close range, but CAN damage enemies within a 3-4 square distance! (Enemies 0-2 squares avoid the attack)
...Come in several varieties and act differently depending on their type (Spears thrust and poke, Halberds swing and slash, and Glaives, which have a combo-dance style.)

Now with that said, Polearms can come in many different varieties and styles! We can also re-introduce long forgotten types of polearms that people would never think first of when the word comes to mind. Sarissas, Linstocks, and Voulge's are just a few to name.

I encourage you to think of the possibilities in which Polearms can fulfill your lives in what swords already do.

And in that, it's yours.

oh yeahhhh

tottally with u here. spiral knights has a huge problem in their only melee weapons being swords. i have always loved battleaxes since a kid cuz of there awesomness and got excited when i saw the heavy hatchet at the store. sadly it was just a big clumsy sword. polaxes would be great and i urge the devs to make new melee weapons cuz not evryone likes swords. good thinkin. oh yeah i posted this on my kindle so wat now?

The idea is sound - and has

The idea is sound - and has come up before - but needs refinement. That range is absurd; four of five squares? Two or three, dude, four absolute tops.

The trick is to balance them out so that they have a place alongside swords and guns. Reducing the range is a start; they've got to have better reach than a sword, but need to be pretty heavily outclassed by firearms in that regard. Attack speed is another. The way I see it, the very fastest polearms should be no faster than a medium sword, probably a little slower; heavier polearms (like battleaxes, halberds &c) should be even slower than heavy swords. It's consistent - you just can't swing a halberd as fast as a sword, I don't care what Soul Calibur says - and both offsets and is itself offset by the advantage of the additional range.

I like the idea of polearms not doing damage at close range - again, consistency - but if they don't inflict actual harm, I do think they should at least deliver a hefty knockback. You're still hitting the enemy with the haft, and besides, even gunslingers aren't completely defenseless at melee range.
