Do we preview testers need a beta code to play in beta
or do we join automatically.

As far as I can tell, Spiral Knights is still technically in a closed preview event - not beta. The folks at Sega keep referring to Spiral Knights as being in beta on Twitter and their official blog, and that's been creating some confusion with older players. You don't need a new code or anything to play.
Seeing as you already have a username/pw and were able to login to the forums, you're good to go.
Go to the main webpage and hit play and you'll d/l the client.
Login with the same username and password after download and bam! game time.
