I have been playing fine for weeks..system is good.
I hit play from Steam tonight and it tried to update a patch, no biggie right?
Ok the little window says patching ....then it pops up in a spiral knights window "the configuration file is missing the 'appbase'. 0% complete"
That window just sits there so I close it. Now I click play again from steam and some java window pops up immediately after the "preparing to launch Sprial knights" window. The java window reads "0% complete The application has failed to launch due to the following error: Invalid path 'getdown.txt'. Please visit (blank) for more info on how to handle such problems.

So I made sure I downloaded the most recent Java then uninstalled the game from steam and reinstalled it. Same result.

I am fairly noobish with computer lingo but I can figure out most things in the past.

Steam might not be removing

Steam might not be removing all the files for the game. For the most part, Steam only carries the base install, and the patcher handles all the updates. Chances are you got hit with a corrupted download or a server error that tripped up the patcher.

What you want to do is delete the digest.txt, getdown.txt and replace them with new server copies. You want to right click the links and "save as"

http://download.threerings.net/spiral/20110720172834/digest.txt

put the new files in the main SK folder and try relaunching.

Solved

Wow thank you very much starlinvf
That fixed my problem instantly. I have no clue what that means or why you knew to do that but thank you as I would have been stuck forever .

starlinvf...

I'm not sure if you can solve my problem...but here goes...

K, I have pretty much the same problem as the last dude, but my problem is 'Unexpected end of file from server'.

Sometimes this happens and I have to try again a another time. Ya, my version IS Steam, but I have no-idea how to fix this. Any ideas? It's refusing to co-operate...
