Hello, I have recently download this game from Steam. Whenever I try starting it a little window appears and it says its starting the game or something like that. So I wait, a little less than a minute later, it looks like it switches to full screen. So I wait even more. Then, my screen gets automatically set to "power saving mode" (the same thing happens when my computer is set to sleep), and the only think I CAN do, is restart my computer manually. My computer is from 2004, its graphics cards a little bad I know, but it still should be able to run this game. I have redownloaded Java, no help and my graphic card is updated. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Steam Overlay...

The short term solution for me was to disable the steam overlay (from SK's properties in the game library), though you can't do any energy purchases at all afterwards...

and so far I have looked through the forums here AND in steam's forums and support, this has the most information about dealing with the overlay not starting up.

ps. had the same problems starting all of my steam games from within steam with the overlay support turned on, and i have to start those games from their execution files directly. Oh, sent a ticket about that but so far no reply.

Could you please give us more specific details about your computer, but please don't paste an entire dxdiag in here. Also, if you could put a copy of your projectx.log up for viewing it may highlight a specific issue. The file can be found in Steam\steamapps\common\spiral knights. Again, please don't drop the entire log into the forums (those things are long!). Use an external host like Pastebin instead please.

Hmmmm 3.00GHZ, dual core, 1022MB of ram, Windows XP Pro, do you need anything else?

Whats the model number on your graphics card? It could be the graphics chip can't support the game, or the drivers might be too old.

sounds like the video card itself had a fault. Do a Run dxdiag. From the program that pops up, go to the display tab and check the version and driver date.

What looks like is happening is the video card ran into a fault, but the drivers are still functioning. When that happens, most ATI cards since the 9000 series will try to softboot the GPU without reporting a fault to the OS, avoiding a BSOD. If it can't recover after a certain amount of time, it reports the fault and the OS sees it as a driver crash.

The X300 supports a high enough OpenGL, so its probably just old drivers.

It would a lot better if you could do a Dive into the system and monitor the registers directly..... but thats not gonna be possible for another 15 years maybe. I guess we'll just have to make due with drivers until then. :P
