of downloading the Spiral Knights icon onto my computer?

I don't know what Knight_117 is on about. There is no way to play offline.
If you're asking about the option it gives you to save a shortcut to the desktop, it is simply for convenience. You can launch the game like any other application, instead of launching it by visiting the web page. Either way, the actual guts of the program are downloaded and saved elsewhere on your computer. (It may be different if you're playing through Steam. I can't help you there.)
Pros:
Faster
No internet needed
Cons:
Lanches than crashes...
