Unexpected end of file from server

I'm a Steam user who has been playing for a month or so and since the last patch I have been unable to get past the patching process, always receiving the message "Unexpected end of file from server".

I've tried downloading digest.txt and getdown.txt and overwriting the ones in my Spiral Knights directory as other posts have suggested. I've tried using the Steam file validation process. I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game, all to no avail. I am at a complete loss as to how to fix this problem. I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some wisdom.

Below is the launcher.log file, which I think some people post when they have issues launching the program. It's all Greek to me.

No dice. All that did was

No dice. All that did was make the error message appear immediately instead of after downloading data.

This problem has been occurring for several days now.

It won't let me download it

It won't let me download it due to "an invalid or unsupported form of compression" according to Firefox and "The requested site is unavailable" according to Internet Explorer.

That shows you have some kind of filtering going on at the network level. Since you have no proxy configured I'd wager you have an ISP provided Modem/Router with web-filter capabilities.

If I'm wrong, then you must have a really fancy security suite program. :P

Well, I don't have any special security installed. I just have AVG Antivirus and the default Windows 7 firewall. I'm not really that knowledgable about the router situation, I might talk to one of my flatmates and see if they know anything I suppose. I'm not aware of anything having changed on the network since the last time I successfully patched the game.

Installed Spiral Knights on my netbook and got the same error. Might be a network thing after all. No idea how to go about rectifying it though.

Simplest way to troubleshoot

Simplest way to troubleshoot the issue is to power cycle the router and modem in case its just a glitch. You can also try clearing the java cache. Control panel\Programs\Java
General Tab\Temporary internet files\settings\delete files

If your ISP is running a transparent proxy server, it can some times end up compressing a data transfer to try and save bandwidth. The problem is if the web server compresses it, and the proxy server compresses it again, the browser can't decompress it to get the original data. The instructions below will tell the browser to not request compression. This way it'll either work, or give you another error.

Type about:config in the URL bar (Accept the disclaimer)
Type encoding in the filter field underneath the URL bar
Doubleclick the line network.http.accept-encoding
Blank out the value and hit ok.

(Default is gzip, deflate )

Little update on this. You can work around the error by entering the URL at proxify.com to directly download the digest.txt and getdown.txt (thank Yoichi for this tidbit)

The other files don't seem to be affected, so it may just be limited to text/plain MIME type. Still not sure if its a server problem or a transparent proxy issue.
